  1. And when that 4-seamer is 96-98, the combo is devastating.
  2. What I don't love about analyzing relievers with those metrics, just like any other, is that the small sample size makes them noisy. If there's a week in which a reliever happens to face 10 struggling hitters, and 8 of them are susceptible to the 4-seamers up in the zone, it can appear to create patterns in the pitcher's season that aren't really there.
  3. Doesn't need to save the pen but he struck out 37% of hitters and walked 8.5%. It's not like we don't have room for that.
  4. Where's Jack Neely? He was elite last year in AAA and throws 97.
  5. You have to have absolutely elite secondaries to get away with a 92 mph fastball.
  6. I'm having a hard time with this logic. If he was 28, sure, who cares what he did at 25. An aging curve is a real thing. His peripherals getting worse is a pattern likely influenced by his age. You can use this to help predict how he is likely to perform this year. I know you know this, so I'm confused. I don't really care that he gave up runs last night, I worry that a guy in decline is again going to be given a long leash in critical situations and it will cost the team wins. I thought this a month ago and if he converts the next 3 saves perfectly, I'll feel the same.
  7. Yeah, I was annoyed the second he was promised the closer's role, presumably because of the gray in his beard. Hodge was fantastic, but he needs to shave out a bald spot or something.
  8. Man, I really appreciate your takes and think you're a wonderful part of this community but i fear you have outsmarted yourself here. In his last three seasons (ages 33,34,35), Pressly's K% has gone from 35 to 27 to 23. Opponents BA has gone from .178 to .215 to .259. WHIP from 0.89 to 1.07 to 1.34. If you want to say the guy isn't 100% washed, fine, that's fair. Put him in low leverage spots and see how he fares. To believe so strongly that this pattern will not continue at age 36 that you make the guy your closer is just an obvious mistake.
  9. Had a few and indulged in some sad-sack meatballery there, but the team can't afford another bad-bullpen-until- June.
  10. Patchwork bullpen 7.0 will still be good because Ebenezer O' Hoss was successful in 14 innings last year with a 90th percentile spin rate on his slider, so forget any possible regression at age 59. John D. Franklin is even younger than O' Hoss and his career includes 5 straight 1.0 WAR seasons with the Red Sox from 2012-2016. His K rate was a troubling 2% last year, but a return to form seems possible. Joe Borowski was spotted in Wrigleyville this week, his 4-seamer can reportedly still touch the upper 70s. But really, Thielbar is 38 and had a whip over 1.50 Keller had a 21% BB rate in 45 innings last season and was worth negative half a win for the Royals. I'm begging you Cubs, give me all the electric arms. Let the Jack Neelys and Luke Littles fail, at least there is upside.
  11. Or they'll let him blow 5 or 10 games first. I really want to stay positive, but these grizzled vets, throwing 92, shouldn't be at the back end of the bullpen.
  12. I went long Amaya, buying a couple hundred last night.
  13. Nah, Amaya had to cover 6 inches below his knees after that call.
  14. Optimistic for the season, but I've got a feeling they get trounced tonight.
  15. Amaya will be an all-star The back end of the bullpen will be a mess again. Swanson will have a sub .650 OPS Steele and Imanaga will both have rough seasons Suzuki, Happ and Busch will have their best offensive seasons.
  16. I know this isn't big-brained analysis but, and I said it last summer, Cam Smith just looks like a star. Never thought he'd be up at this point, and I didn't hate the trade, but if the guy is a stud I won't be at all surprised.
  17. The biggest problem I have with acquiring these veteran relievers on the back-end of their careers is that they are allowed far too many innings before the plug is pulled. A lot of damage can be done because of this, ala Neris. A young guy will get his shot and if he isn't effective pretty immediately, that's it. Jeremiah Estrada got 15 innings with the Cubs, for example.
  18. I mean, yeah. If we're starting the revolution now, count me in. Until that point, I desperately need the distraction.
  19. The grey winter gave way to budding spring, and that which had lain dormant flourished once again.
