  1. There must be some kind of story here, you don't fire arguably your best ex-player analyst, especially when Gammons is off the show. To top it off, the producer had no comment. Hhhhmmmmm..... I'm going to miss Reynolds. I thought he had good insight and a decent personality. Kruk OTOH.
  2. People do get hurt, but how often do you see this frequency of injuries? The Cards didn't lose Carpenter and Marquis along with Pujols. I think it's too easy to blame everything on Dusty/Hendry and their overuse, misuse of players. Wood and Prior were horses, and more than a few commented on the perfect mechanics of Prior, so he should have been able to take higher pitch counts. Honestly, it's hard seeing absolutely everything going wrong for the Cubs (even seeing our somewhat promising fill-ins for Prior and Wood get hurt) while the Sox never seem to get hurt and have a DH playing like he's 25 rather than 36.
  3. He's going to get at least 10m a year come next year. It's what the current market demands. I mean is Furcal worth 13m a year? Is AJ Burnett worth 5\60 million? No and no. Just b/c people are stupid enough to pay average players crazy money doesn't mean you jump into the stupid pool. He may get $10m from someone next year, in fact I'd be surprised if he didn't, but he'll be 31 next year and he has a career .835 OPS. For a corner OF, that's above average, but not $10m worth. Put it this way - the team that pays him $10m next year is not going to get a good return on their investment (disclaimer - if he moves back to 2B that helps, but I still think $10m is too much - Walker had a better OPS each of the last 2 seasons). OPS or no OPS, Walker isn't even in the same universe as Soriano (except when it comes to defense).
  4. ...and lots of bad luck. I hate the word "curse" cause I think its a copout, but I can't ignore the string of bad luck with injuries. Doesn't it seem odd that everyone is always hurt? I agree completely. I can't think of another team that has lost 2 young aces to injuries and to top it off with an freak injury to its MVP and its biggest trade acquisition. On a related subject: How realistic is it that the Cubs could have planned for both Prior and Wood to be out and supplemented them with another #2-3 pitcher? We could have overspent on Washburn, Weaver or Morris this past offseason, but would we be much better? In fairness, you can't replace two aces. Other teams haven't been able to do it any better than the Cubs.
  5. Stupid coaching staff still made the final decision. Shouldn't let a player who has never been seriously injured and doesn't know how his body would respond with his wrist not at 100% make the decision. If the player says he's good to go and doctors can't find anything structurally wrong, you can fault the team for letting him play. Until D-Lee swung the bat, you don't know how his wrist would respond.
  6. I'm done trying to question the moves of Williams and the Sox. Try as I might, you have to give the guy his props. While we trade major league relievers for no name struggling A pitchers, KW lands a 40-40 threat for a guy who currently is sporting a 4+ ERA. Now, I know he has all of this potential, but as we have come to experience from our ace prospects, it's just that, potential.
  7. I'll say up front that I don't believe in curse (human or animal), but I do feel that something in the baseball universe shifted after a certain fan interrupted the Cubs momentum (and some say concentration) just 5 outs from the 04WS. Really, has ANYTHING gone right for this hardluck franchise since that moment? Two pitchers capable of being the best Cubs hurlers in a generation are falling apart before our eyes. Our major trade acquisition followed up 1 1/3 injured packed seasons by returning to his top 10 hitter status now that he's in LA. Our MVP gets injured in a freak accident that has rendered his 2006 useless. And, I almost forgot, our best hitter in a generation left town with a dark cloud hanging over his head. Meanwhile, to make matters worse, the hated team on the southside can't seem to do anything wrong. Please help me find a glimmer of hope in all of this dispair. The only thing I can come up with is that when we final win the World Series, it will be all the more sweet because of truly how bad things have gotten.
  8. Soriano for McCarthy would decimate their bullpen. He's their long guy and one of the only reliable relievers they have. Tribune was suggesting that the Sox will get Soriano and play the triangle defense game so the Twins and Tigers don't get him. Who cares what their bullpen looks like when they will post 10-12 runs a night. After getting burned by the continual promises of stud young pitchers, I think McCarthy for Soriano is a steal. There aren't many out there who have 40-40 potential.
  9. Let me see if I have this right....we have a 4 run lead with 6 outs to go, our most valuable pitcher is already over 100 pitches, and all we are playing for is to move to within 20 games of 500...............and he leaves Z in??? Maybe the previous poster who believes Dusty is trying to strengthen his "dude, how am I supposed to win without any of my big weapons" case by forcing Z to get injured.
  10. Boy, I know us Cubs fans are considered real optimists, but I'm even surprised we can find the silver lining in an 0-7 (and now 0-8) performance.
  11. Novoa has continued on his mediocre ways since we got him. When a player really doesn't improve over the course of two seasons, and he's bad to begin with, it's time to fold and get new cards.
  12. Hard to root for Dempster when he's been soooo bad lately that it almost seems like he is blowing games on purpose. A-Ram is really a toss up. Seems like he loses his concentration way too often for an all-star caliber player.
  13. I really wonder if Prior had a sympathy injury after Wood announced he was done for the year? Maybe they are secretly both off golfing everyday? Otherwise I can't think of a team in recent history with luck as truly bad as the Cubs. Makes me want to puke.
  14. Why couldn't we have pried Kearns away from the Reds for some combination of Williamson, Novoa, Eyre, Ohman, etc.?
  15. Not to mention the Stros are coming off a World Series performance....
  16. We need to remember that Cedeno is essentially a rookie. He's going to have his ups and downs, just like Murton. The question for me is whether we can afford to have both Cedeno and Murton in the lineup at the same time. I like both guys, but right now they aren't giving us enough production to keep both. I'd like to see Murton be a top sub next year.
  17. C-Lee and Zito....book it! We'll have the money to spend with Wood and Maddux's salaries gone, plus I don't think Hendry spent all of this season's available budget given the poor FA market. Picture a muderers row of D-Lee, C-Lee and A-Ram and a starting rotation of Z, Z Prior and pick 2 (Marshall, Marmol, Guzman, Hill). We can get better in a hurry, just wait and see.
  18. It took you until now to realize that something's amise with this team?!?
  19. Thank God I have the Red Sox to root for, because I truly can't take anymore of this worthless, steaming pile of crap that is the Chicago Cubs. Frankly, I don't care if we win another game this year. Bring up the entire AAA roster for all I care.
  20. Just wondering....Has a pitcher EVER held a team scoreless for 25 straight innings? I wish we could fire the entire team right about now.
  21. Will someone just go ahead and shoot Rusch and put him (and us) out of his misery. This old dog just doesn't have it anymore. I'd much rather see Hill or Guzman in long relief roles.
  22. If you think it's been painful watching C-Pat rebound the way that he has this year, imagine what it would be like to see Prior rebound into Cy Young form for another team. He's too young and inexpensive to trade off at this point. Prior sure would make a nice #2 behind Z.
  23. Appropriate that Uribe finishes us off...
