  1. Do whatever you want with the road jerseys, but don't touch the pinstripe home jerseys.
  2. Yes. The speculation is that he may change his mind to work with his brother. Right. I think the circumstances could help change Greg's mind. But do you really want a guy coaching who had to be convinced into doing it?
  3. As much as I love Greg Maddux, my impression of him is that he really doesn't want to work every day as a Major League coach. He has all the money he needs and plenty of free time for golf and I question whether he would truly be motivated to serve as a pitching coach.
  4. Maybe it's just known in the inner circles within baseball that either the Rays simply will not grant permission (do they have to if it's for Martinez to be a head coach since it's a promotion?) or that Martinez simply doesn't want to be a head coach and is fine with where he is right now? I believe the Rays would be within their rights to deny permission for him to interview, but whether they would actually do that and block the career progression of one of their employees is another story. I find that highly unlikely. Maybe your 2nd comment is correct and he just doesn't want to be an MLB manager right now for whatever reason.
  5. The streets of Penn St. look like something out of an episode of The Walking Dead.
  6. Apparently the Red Sox have not asked for permission to interview Dave Martinez either. For someone who supposedly is ready for a Major League manager job, why is he not interviewing anywhere?
  7. Is he even a candidate? I think he's being considered but the Cubs haven't been granted permission to interview him yet. If he is being considered, I don't think there would be any problem getting permission to speak with him... which leads me to believe maybe he is not a serious candidate.
  8. So when does the Tim Tebow experiment end? I heard Brian Billick on the radio earlier this week saying that the Broncos need to take the rest of this season to evaluate and find out what they have in Tebow. I would argue that they already know what they have, a steaming pile of crap, and they would be wise to find out whether Brady Quinn can give them anything going forward. Also, the sooner they switch Tebow to Tight End, the better the likelihood that he will actually be able to contribute something as an NFL player.
  9. Except that it wasn't a catch. I stand corrected... although I still would say that it wasn't a catch, but was just too close to overturn.
  10. Except that it wasn't a catch.
  11. So are we still expecting interviews with guys like Dave Martinez, Sandy Alomar Jr., and Terry Francona? We may not know anything for awhile if the Cubs are spending a full day or more with each candidate. I love what I hear about their interview process, but it might keep us all in suspense for a few weeks.
  12. It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one. He was always one of my favorite players, even after he left the Cubs, then returned briefly, then left again. With that said, I know very little about his managerial qualifications other than having sat on the bench with Maddon.
  13. Having a relatively cheap, solid veteran middle reliever isn't a bad thing. There are plenty of other spots in the bullpen to fill with young arms and I don't think $1-2M for Wood will hurt anything. It's not like the Cubs are doing him a favor by keeping him on the roster. He is still productive and will almost certainly be willing to sign below market value again.
  14. Yep, there is plenty of room in the Left Field area to put up a nice video board while keeping the original scoreboard in tact.
  15. That is awesome on so many levels. Mocking Tebow, social media, prayer in sports... Take your pick.
  16. While I understand your point, I think that there are two places where I disagree: 1) I think the Cubs can compete as soon as 2012, depending on the available resources and being able to make a few key moves. This means that the remaining peak years will be extremely valuable to making this happen. As we've seen twice from St Louis, all you have to do is make the playoffs - anything can happen from there. 2) While Pujols will inevitably start to decline during this contract, he's starting from a peak as one of the 5-10 best hitters of all time. Even declining production from Albert will still be very good until near the end of the contract. I do agree with both points and I won't be upset if they do sign him, but my preference would simply be that they don't. I agree that the Cubs can compete in 2012, but I also believe at some point they have to make decisions that are either best for today or best for the long term. While those decisions are not always mutually exclusive, they definitely can be. I truly think Epstein's comments thus far indicate an unwillingness to overspend on a player toward the end of his prime, so I would consider Fielder a much more realistic possibility.
  17. I may be in the minority, but I don't want Pujols. He will be 32 years old next season and likely only has 2-3 more peak years left. 2-3 years is also a pretty good estimate for when the Cubs will begin to see improvement in their organization as a result of dedicating resources to drafting, scouting, and player development. It just doesn't make sense to me to spend a ton of money on a guy who will be on the decline by the time the team is built to contend consistently.
  18. I just keep telling myself that 3 or 4 years down the road the Cubs will have a completely restocked organization and financial resources that St. Louis can never match. Enjoy it while you can Cardinals.
  19. Yeah, that was odd. If I hadn't seen the game, I would think that Carpenter staying in was what won the game for the Cardinals.
  20. I hate that Walmart commercial. Can anyone explain the point of layaway? If someone doesn't have enough money to buy something, why don't they just wait until they do and then go buy it?
  21. But, but, this "good" world series worthy team. Clutch.
  22. I will be amazed if Carpenter survives the season next year.
  23. I'm with you. I heard an Epstein interview where he talked about the key to free agency is to build a deep enough system where your team goes into free agency in a position of strength. He said mistakes are made when a team is desperate to fill a position and signs a player simply because he is the best available, although he may not fit their ideal description. To me, that is CJ Wilson.
  24. Nice how Carpenter gets a generous outside corner.
