  1. Career - .285/.336/467 (2641 PA) 2005 - .217/.245/.261 (49 PA) Age - turns 39 in April This is why he's getting a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training and not a guaranteed deal. If not for our manager, this would be a good risk/reward acquisition. Fire Buttermaker!
  2. Any discussion of one-time Expo outfielders and the Hall of Fame begins and ends with the great Tim Raines.
  3. Ken Rosenthal, to Hendry: "Jim, I've heard you may have some interest in trading for Miguel Tejada. Is that true? Have there been any talks on the matter?" Hendry: "Obviously, we like him a lot. And, yes, we've had some prior discussions about Tejada." Rosenthal pulls a muscle running back to his computer. Shortly thereafter, NSBB implodes.
  4. Just in case you decide to edit. :D
  5. I can't see them giving him a guaranteed contract, if for no other reason than it will create 40-man roster problems.
  6. Terrible trade. Why would we trade two quality workhorses like Jackson and Buhl for some unproven kid and a strikeout artist like Phillips? Typical Cubs...
  7. Beautiful! This will complete our outfield of guys who sound French, but really aren't! Marquis-Pierre-Jacque
  8. Beane is one of the best. Out of curiosity, what did we give him for Barrett? I know it isn't the same as Zito, but I can't remember who we traded. Damian Miller.
  9. I wouldn't mind giving Miller a Dempster/Williamson type contract, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Shoulder vs. elbow. Apples and oranges.
  10. This has been talked about a lot, but the key is keeping Jones away from LHP. 2005: Jones vs. RHP: .268/.348/.466/.814 Burnitz vs. RHP: .267/.345/.430/.775 Not an insignificant difference. Jones/Murton for LF! Get a real RF!
  11. Levine said the offer was on the table for the orioles to accept or reject. I don't think Levine is a very reliable source, but, to be fair, who's to say that the "baseball sources" are any more accurate than he is?
  12. I believe that the rule in question applies only to players who you signed out of the free agent pool. 0-3 guys and players who are merely arb eligible can be traded at any time. The Cubs can't trade either Neifi or Jacque until this summer, unless he grants his permission. The Cubs can trade Pierre, Prior, Hairston, Novoa, Soto, Dopirak, Brownlie, Chris Shaver, etc. anytime they want (subject to any no-trade clauses, of course). I think...
  13. Why is that? I wasn't aware that Pierre had a no trade clause. He's probably thinking the old sign and trade thing. Technically we haven't signed Pierre yet. Even after we sign Pierre, we can still trade him. Not that we would.
  14. Hey, Jim... Get your big bat in RF and move Jones to LF to platoon with MM.
  15. Hoops, a couple of other minor corrections: Mabry is $1.075, not $1.05. Lee is at $9.42 after earning a $0.75 escalation in his 2006 salary by virtue of his third place finish in the NL MVP voting.
  16. Prior, Hill, Patterson, and Dopirak for Tejada, Bedard, and Markakis. Other than that, walk away.
  17. If we trade Prior, I want to add Hill and get Markakis back. I'm not so wild about just Prior for Tejada and Bedard. Markakis hasn't hatched yet, but there's a very good chance he will and, if/when he does, he'll be exactly what I've been pining for in this organization for years. A lefthanded pure hitter with power.
  18. So you're giving all the positives of Zito and then describing Prior only as a guy who hasn't pitched a full season. I don't get the point. Are we talking about some third rate middle relief prospect coming of back to back tommy john surgeries? Are we talking about a 20 year old starting pitcher? Zito- full package Prior- full package The majority of baseball would value Prior higher. I'd rather have Prior however I don't think it's crazy to value Zito more. Zito has proven to be a durable effective pitcher. Factoring in relative cost, you have to value Prior more, but, leaving that out, it's not completely ridiculous to value Zito more. Leaving out relative cost is what would be ridiculous.
  19. OK, OK - you got me. I'm a stooge of the Cubs propaganda machine.
  20. That's a good fit for Rondell. He won't be asked to play the OF hardly at all.
  21. I believe a lot of it is related to everyone's favorite toothpick sucker and the seemingly unquestioning love the brass has for him.
