Although I wouldn't really want to see it since they're in our division, a part of me wishes Selig would step in and award the Reds Chad Cordero as punishment for the Nationals grossly acting in bad faith. -
He would easily pass through waivers. Neifi Perez would pass through waivers with no pressure drop whatsoever. That flow would be entirely frictionless.

This has probably been talked about somewhere in the bowels of the 70+ page Maddux trade thread, but it seems likely to me that this deal has Tim Wilken's influence all over it. Wilken was with the Blue Jays when Izturis was first signed, wasn't he?

In terms of gross incompetence and wholesale failure, no other professional sports organization can hold a candle to the Cubs' body of work. Contracting the Chicago National League Ball Club is the only humane thing to do.

The first thing wrong with that is that Maddux is a FA after 2006, not after 2007. -
I think that's a brilliant move by the Marlins. None of those three pitchers is that great and they can reap two top draft choices by simply letting Soriano walk away.

Not me. As far as prospects go, pitchers are much more likely than hitters to have something magically click and become good.

If we're going to get an OBP-challenged SS, let's try to get JJ Hardy from Milwaukee, what with the emergence of Bill Hall. At least Hardy has some promise and might get better. I could live with a Hardy-Cedeno middle infield, if it would allow us to get a top middle-of-the-order hitter for the outfield (Abreu) and a top starting pitcher (Schmidt).

Plenty of high quality baseball players have been acquired by trading away relievers. But it doesn't just have to be a 1 man deal. Throw him in with Walker, Jones or Pierre and the deal could be sweetened. Jon Garland/Matt Karchner leaps to mind. Who did the Cubs trade to Pitt for that right handed middle relief pitcher in 2003? I can't remember his name....either I suppose. :oops: It wasn't Pitt and I don't think it was '03, but are you talking David Weathers? Yeah, Weathers! The Cubs acquired Weathers and a minor league pitcher from the Brewers for Pete Zoccolillo and Ruben "Fat is when a person is like" Quevedo.
