  1. "You saber types have got 'city hands'. You've been calculating OBP all your life." "Hey, I don't need this 'working class hero' crap!"
  2. There is a fatal flaw in your statement. Billy Beane doesn't scout guys. He goes strictly off stats. If Hendry and Hughes never look at stats, it follows that Beane must never scout guys. What? Billy Beane and Hendry/Hughes are completely different ends of the spectrum, so to make an inference or correlation or draw conclusions by comparing them really just confounds the argument. Are you being sarcastic because of the "Moneyball" discussion in the Gary Hughes thread? For the record, Beane may not be a scout officially. But that doesn't mean he sits in front of data all day and makes his decisions based upon it. He was at one time an advance scout for the A's, and I recognize the difference, but I can't recall if he was ever a player scout by trade. Lighten up, Francis. I'm just doing a bit. :D

  5. "Bob, the pitching sucks. Can I punch out?"
  6. Is it wrong to wish that the doctors operate on Berkman's healthy knee?
  7. If I'm not mistaken, the Cubs have had just 39 men on the roster since the Patterson trade. Kess is correct, but Miller has not yet been added to the 40-man roster. His contract requires only that he be added to the 40-man roster sometime before opening day.
  8. I believe Chris Carpenter's injury was even more severe, but he went ahead and had surgery.
  9. "Dave Owen, no relation to Phillies executive Paul Owens." "Cardinals outfielder George Hendrick, no relation to former Orioles catcher Ellie Hendricks."
  10. While you're at it, why not ask for a money tree and a rainbow made out of cotton candy?
  11. Juan Pierre is a step down defensively from Corey Patterson. Juan Pierre is a step up defensively from Jerry Hairston, Jr.
  12. The cross-eyed chick is hot.
  13. If the Cubs sign Hidalgo, will Len and Bob call him "Doggie"?
  14. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060117&content_id=1297017&vkey=hotstove2005&fext=.jsp Zambrano - $7.2 / $6.0 Pierre - $6.5 / $5.0 Prior - $4.0 / $3.3 Hairston - $2.6 / $1.95 Ohman - $0.775 / $0.50
  15. Actually, this team lost primarily because it pitched poorly, but its deficiency in getting on base was a huge problem.
  16. "I told her 'I love you, I worship you, I adore you'. She said 'Ain't that a kick in the head?'. That's not enough for me." - Richard Lewis
  17. Heaven forbid that the Reds relieve Grant Balfour with Homer Bailey.
  18. If Todd Walker gets traded to the TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS, I will clear my schedule to listen to his departing comments. They ought to put that stuff on pay-per-view.
  19. Huff's statistical decline doesn't bother you at all, or do think last year was an anomaly? Or do you think his weaknesses would be less evident in a platoon role? It bothers me a little bit, but last year's numbers can largely be attributed to a big dropoff in BABIP. I still think he'll wind up doing well enough to be at least a 'B' free agent next winter, so you can get one draft choice for him.
  20. Why? They are virtually the SAME player. So what makes Tavarez better then Pierre? (and don't say the age) Well, Pierre has been a quite valuable MLB player during several seasons in his career, Taveras was awful last season, and there's nothing in his minor league record that suggests that he's ever going to be much more than he is right now. Other than that, they are virtually the same player.
  21. From Tampa's perspective, can they get more in return if they do a deal now, or is it better for them to wait until Spring Training, or is it better to wait until the July trading deadline? I would imagine they could get the most for Huff late in spring training - assuming that he doesn't lay an egg during exhibition play. Do your highest value "late in spring training" comments also apply to Lugo, or is he more valuable now or in July? They apply to Lugo as well.

  23. Huff and Lugo in a single trade would be outstanding. Huff platooning with Murton in LF and Jones platooning with Grissom(/Restovich) in RF. CF - Juan Pierre 2B - Julio Lugo 1B - Derrek Lee 3B - Aramis Ramirez LF - Aubrey Huff/Matt Murton RF - Jacque Jones/Marquis Grissom C - Michael Barrett/Henry Blanco SS - Ronny Cedeno I would be willing to trade quite a bit to get those two guys. Even if you didn't want to keep them beyond 2006, you could almost certainly offer them arbitration with little or no fear of them accepting and sticking you with an unwanted financial commitment. Once you did that, you could lean back and accept the (most likely) four (probably at least three) draft choices that were coming your way. That would help restock the system.
  24. I know he's a favorite whipping boy, but I'm surprised that not many people would have re-signed Rusch. In a market where Brett Tomko gets $8+ over two years, I'm quite happy to have Rusch.
