  1. Michael Wuertz for Brandon Phillips? Good grief.
  2. He's a right handed hitter who doesn't profile well defensively at his position, is not a plus baserunner, is a pretty big hacker in his own right, and we want to trade Pie for him? Why? Because all Cub prospects fail?
  3. I'll take it with whatever. A side order of grilled onions?
  4. Unconfirmed rumor out of the west coast that the Cubs and A's may be close to a deal in which the Cubs would acquire reserve outfielder Bobby Kielty. Take it with a grain of salt.
  5. The 40-man roster is currently full, but unless Wellemeyer defies all odds and reason and makes the team, he will be off due to his out-of-options status. As such, there is effectively room on the 25-man roster for one NRI.
  6. Please note that, despite how the link reads, the player returned is Juan Mateo, not Julio. He had real good numbers last season, but I saw him a few years ago in one game and he was completely unimpressive. Small sample size, plus he could have improved.

  8. It may be worth remembering that the Chicago Cubs organization is not at liberty to disclose any aspect of Mark Prior's health without his consent.
  9. Trading a reasonably healthy Scott Williamson for a bench player would be pretty dumb, even by Cub standards.
  10. It's just an estimate for planning purposes. The Cubs have a habit of overpaying role players. I expect he'll actually get something in the $0.6-$0.7 range.
  11. Twenty players currently under contract with defined salaries: CF Juan Pierre - $5,750,000 RF Jacque Jones - $4,333,333 3B Aramis Ramirez - $10,500,000 2B Todd Walker - $2,500,000 1B Derrek Lee - $9,416,667 C Michael Barrett - $4,000,000 (estimate - breakdown of $12/3 deal never published) IF Neifi Perez - $2,500,000 IF Jerry Hairston - $2,300,000 UT John Mabry - $1,075,000 C Henry Blanco - $1,500,000 SP Greg Maddux - $9,000,000 SP Mark Prior - $3,650,000 SP Glendon Rusch - $2,750,000 RP Will Ohman - $610,000 RP Scott Eyre - $3,700,000 RP Scott Williamson - $2,000,000 RP Bobby Howry - $4,000,000 RP Ryan Dempster - $5,000,000 DL Kerry Wood - $12,000,000 DL Wade Miller - $1,000,000 Subtotal - $87,585,000 Others to be added: LF Matt Murton - $350,000 SS Ronny Cedeno - $350,000 OF Marquis Grissom - $1,000,000 SP Carlos Zambrano - $6,900,000 SP Jerome Williams - $350,000 RP Roberto Novoa - $350,000 RP Michael Wuertz - $350,000 Total - $97,235,000
  12. I know we're hungry for anything to talk about, but this is all so much nothing. Ohman was eligible for arbitration, but had essentially no ammunition to take to a case. Nevertheless, he asked for more than he knew any arbiter would likely award him. He probably did this hoping to squeeze a little extra money out of the Cubs, knowing that they don't like to go through a hearing. The Cubs, knowing that Ohman had a dog of a case, but still not wanting to go through a hearing, coughed up a little extra dough to get Ohman to settle. In the end, he probably got an extra $50,000 out of the Cubs over the settlement figure they originally had in mind. Good for him. I'd be shocked if there were any hard feelings at all.
  13. Juan Pierre - OF - Cubs Cubs agreed to terms with outfielder Juan Pierre on a one-year, $5.75 million contract. That's midpoint between the $6.5 million Pierre filed at and the $5 million the team offered. A long-term deal is still a possibility for Pierre, who is eligible for free agency at season's end. Feb. 2 - 3:18 pm et Will Ohman - R - Cubs Cubs agreed to terms with LHP Will Ohman on a one-year, $610,000 contract. Ohman asked for $775,000 and was offered $500,000 in his first year of arbitration eligibility. He'll be the No. 2 lefty in the Cubs' pen after finishing with a 2.91 ERA in 69 appearances last season. Feb. 2 - 3:16 pm et
  14. The Cubs now have twenty (20) players with signed major league contracts for the 2006 season. Juan Pierre Jacque Jones Aramis Ramirez Todd Walker Derrek Lee Michael Barrett John Mabry Neifi Perez Jerry Hairston Henry Blanco Greg Maddux Mark Prior Glendon Rusch Will Ohman Scott Eyre Scott Williamson Bobby Howry Ryan Dempster Kerry Wood Wade Miller
  15. Not gonna happen. In the unlikely event it does, I'll come back on and post a retraction.
  16. I've got him at $6.9. That's a 75-25 split of the difference between the two figures, in Zambrano's favor.
  17. As far as we know, it's a flat $2.5x2 guaranteed, with no incentives of any kind.
  18. The stats suggested are pretty much on the high end in every category. It's probably overly optimistic to expect all of them ON TOP of expecting him to be healthy enough to put in 150+ games. That said, I hope they keep him and play him a lot. He's the best fit at 2B and at #2 in the batting order, given our current personnel.
  19. Well, except for the fact that he's never had that kind of season before and he's entering his age 33 season.
  20. Listening to Harry on the radio was a blast, especially in his later years. My favorite, which most of the time would seemingly come out of nowhere: "Look out!" You never knew if there was a close pickoff play, a line drive had been hit into the stands, or a Soviet ICBM had just passed over the ballpark.
