  1. Sure. Shoulder vs. elbow, though. I wouldn't be confident.
  2. "Old Unreliable" Paul Sullivan writes: Prior is entering the final year of a five-year, $10.5 million deal he signed as the Cubs' top draft pick out of USC in the summer of 2001. He earned $3.55 million in '05 and could receive a significant raise if he exercises his player option and files for arbitration, as expected. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-051219cubs,1,2677941.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines I have been under the impression that Prior's "opt out" chance was for only after the 2004 season, if he had enough service time to qualify for arbitration. I would like to read this from another beat writer before I'm convinced. VineLine did not have Prior listed as arb eligible, and they are usually pretty accurate about this sort of thing. Mr. Bruce Miles, can you clear this up?
  3. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying. I don't think an arb eligible player can "voluntarily" accept a pay cut to less than 80% of his prior year's salary without his team first making him a free agent.
  4. add in a bucket of chicken wings and half the people here things it should land Abreu. Add Williams and Harvey and I think it gets you Abreu. When a team that is not under any sort of pressure to trade a superstar trades him, it's realistic for them to expect to get back at least one guy who is a very, very good bet to be a star. That deal lacks such a player.
  5. Not me. I want all three to become good major league pitchers, but none to become a superstar. The last thing we need is for the Cubs minor league system to get a bad reputation around baseball.
  6. At the risk of being branded a "Hendry apologist", how do we know they didn't?
  7. Yes, he did. I didn't mean defensively. That would be a outfield quite short on power.
  8. That would be a pretty awful outfield, I would think. Plus, I think the Cubs value outfield defense enough that Murton isn't a real option in RF.
  9. The As have not signed him since trading for him. Certainly makes one wonder if they don't sign him today, will they take a chance on what he might get by offering him arby? Yes, of course. This is a team that exercised a $4 million option on Jay Payton. They won't blink at paying Bradley a $4-ish contract. Interestingly enough, the Brewers just traded for Kolb, and now may non-tender him if they can't work out an agreement before the non-tender date. Would the A's do the same? I'm curious. Anything's possible, I suppose, but Bradley's good and Kolb isn't.
  10. http://www.mlb4u.com/arb.html Take a look at the list of arb eligibles. Usually, players eligible for the third time who play for low budget teams are good candidates. Often, though, if these guys are any good, they get traded rather than non-tendered. Kolb, Craig Wilson, Meche, GMJ, Spivey, Borowski are possibilities.
  11. I, too, could be wrong, but I don't believe that the Cubs can dictate to WL teams where they want their guys to play. They can ask, but that's all.
  12. Either that or a seriously deranged one.
  13. "OK, but not everybody needs foot care. Brainstorm. Bobby, whattaya got for me?" Walker to the Rangers for Adrian Gonzalez. Use Gonzalez as a chip with the Devil Rays.
  14. It's amazing how many conflicting reports there are on Jones. Cubs to offer him one year. Cubs to offer him two years. Cubs willing to offer three years. KC offering three years. KC offering three years with a fourth year vesting option. KC offering only two years.
  15. The As have not signed him since trading for him. Certainly makes one wonder if they don't sign him today, will they take a chance on what he might get by offering him arby? Yes, of course. 16. Hill can be optioned. They won't be able to option Williams.
  17. Hendry has been quoted as saying something to the effect that, ideally, Hill will be at Iowa. I think the job is Williams' to lose.
  18. If this report is accurate, it could wind up like the Pierre situation - team with the player the Cubs want asks and asks and asks for Rich Hill. Cubs resist and resist and resist, countering with a two-player offer. Other team holds firm. Cubs wind up tossing in a third player to get the deal done.
  19. One thing to consider about Guzman is that he's never pitched above AA and he has to break camp with the big club for good coming out of spring training 2007.
