  1. Bruce, I'd still like you to answer my question above about Hill and second tier guys, but I have a new one. Do you think it's fair to say that Hendry would trade only one of the trio of essentially-major-league-ready position players (Murton, Cedeno, Pie) for Tejada? I can't imagine him giving two of them. Thanks.
  2. Why would anyone trade a more valuable property that costs less for a less valuable property that costs more?
  3. I like Rich Hill pretty well, but those are two pretty huge differences.
  4. Zero chance the Cubs trade Prior or Zambrano in any sort of deal for Tejada. Not 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%. Zero.
  5. I think either the Cubs will get Tejada within the next couple of days or the Angels or Astros will swoop in and get him in a week. Anything specific that makes you feel this way? Since Fieta (sp) is with Baltimore now he knows what he wants from the Cubs. I think they would move pretty quickly if this is going to work. I think the Angels have a haul of young guys and can then trade Cabrera back to Boston or The O's flip Cabrera to the Red Sox. Especially if the Angels want Manny....they now have a lot more to deal for him and even if they don't get Manny they still get an impact bat. Houston has seen a lot of players get dealt while they waited for Clemens. I think they are going to get either Abreu or Tejada. John Stockstill, not Oneri Fleita.
  6. I don't recall there ever being a Hill/Dunn trade being discussed. I do recall a comment from Bruce Miles that Hendry valued Hill so much, that he wouldn't trade him for Dunn, but that's all I recall. Refresh my memory on the proposed Dunn trade that would have included Rich Hill. That was last year. Hill is no longer an untouchable. Bruce, I think it's clear that Hill would go for the likes of Tejada, Abreu, or Zito. Do you think Hendry would trade him in a deal for the next tier down? Wilkerson/Lugo/Huff/Mench/Nixon/Bradley/Green/Hudson/Kearns/Ibanez/Floyd/...
  7. What could they offer them? If I were Tim Purpura, I would offer them Brad Lidge and Adam Everett. The Astros are in dire need of a middle-of-the-order hitter. They have no one in-house that even has a chance of filling that role. Lidge is outstanding, but they could slide Wheeler or Qualls into the closer's role and probably still be pretty good there. They could sign any league average SS via FA and do better than Everett (i.e. Alex Gonzalez would be an upgrade over Everett, and is actually a little younger than Everett), so they're really just trading Tejada for a very good closer. They'd have to overwhelm them (i.e. overpay) with young arms as they can't offer anything to fill SS. Funny fact...looking at Alex Gonzalez's (former Marlin) page on Baseball reference, the most similar batter by age 28 is....Alex Gonzalez (our former gutless choking dog). Don't underestimate Baltimore's need to get a recognizable name back if they trade Tejada.

  9. If Tejada is indeed traded, watch out for the Astros.
  10. The O's have Roberts so I don't se the need for Walker unless Roberts can slide into the SS position. They do have DH and 1B at-bats available.
  11. Here's my offer for Tejada: Corey Patterson, Ronny Cedeno, one of Brian Dopirak/Ryan Harvey, and one from each of the following two groups: Michael Wuertz/Rich Hill/Angel Guzman/Jae-Kuk Ryu Roberto Novoa/Jerome Williams/Sean Marshall/Carlos Marmol If they want/need a "recognizable name", we can talk about Todd Walker or Scott Williamson.
  12. I don't think the issue is whether the Orioles would want Manny. I think it's whether Manny would approve a trade to go there.
  13. We'll see, but I stand by what I said. If the Cubs wind up trading for Tejada, Pie won't be part of the deal. They might not get him and we might hear that refusal to include Pie was a deal breaker, but I believe Hendry will not part with him.
  14. Vance, I disagree. I don't believe Hendry will include him. We can discuss whether that's a mistake, but I don't think Pie will be part of any Cubs offer.
  15. There is no "opt out" as you describe it. If he's traded to the Cubs, he can demand that the Cubs trade him next offseason. If they don't or can't, then he can become a free agent on March 15th. Anyway, Tejada can DEMAND all he wants that the Orioles trade him. They don't have to. It's all perfectly fair. My point is, if a player demands a team trade him when they had no intention of doing so, you shouldn't be able to turn around and demand a trade from your new team a year later and become a free agent if they don't. I don't see why not. The first demand carries no weight. We just disagree. No big deal.

  17. I like Hill fine, but he can go. The real coup would be getting Tejada without giving up Pie or Murton.
  18. A sampling of players still active when Julio Franco made his major league debut: Gaylord Perry Ferguson Jenkins Willie Stargell Al Oliver Woodie Fryman Dusty Baker Mark Belanger Jay Johnstone Terry Forster Sparky Lyle Tug McGraw Rusty Staub Vern Ruhle Johnny Bench Tom Seaver Don Money Rollie Fingers Doc Medich Rod Carew Bobby Grich Tim Foli Reggie Jackson Ken Forsch Bruce Kison Tommy John Stan Bahnsen Luis Tiant Aurelio Rodriguez Greg Luzinski Ron LeFlore Jerry Koosman Amos Otis Lee May Vida Blue Larry Gura Grant Jackson Jim Palmer Carl Yastrzemski Larry Rothschild Oscar Gamble Bobby Murcer Bob Watson Joe Rudi Toby Harrah Bake McBride Bruce Bochte Jim Essian Lenny Randle Buck Martinez John Mayberry Bucky Dent Mickey Rivers Jon Matlack
  19. Orlando Hudson, please.
  20. Why? Even if they sign Carl Everett to be their DH, they'd still be a LF short if they traded Ibanez. And Reed is no great shakes.
  21. Too much. Too little.
  22. Wilson is sure to be overpaid, but he and Kerry Wood could pose for some cool photos together.
  23. Mench would cost too much in trade to be platooned. Craig Wilson will likely be available for a song, if he's not non-tendered.
