  1. I would hate to give up Guzman, but, unless Huff has a terrible 2006, you'll be able to offer him arbitration with no fear of getting stuck with him, assuming you don't want to keep him. That way, you'll be able to get a high draft choice - possibly two - to offset the loss of Guzman.
  2. I would be very reluctant to trade Rich Hill, but he has two things working against him that are tough to overcome - walks and home runs. Fortunately for him, he strikes people out like crazy and is extremely tough to hit.
  3. With the contracts being passed out to Washburn/Morris/Loaiza types, I find it hard to blame Jim Hendry for not being real anxious to trade Rich Hill and/or Jerome Williams.
  4. If the Red Sox get Crisp, maybe they'll trade Nixon to us. A Nixon-Craig Wilson RF platoon would be a wrecking machine, assuming you could duct tape Nixon together well enough to get 130 games out of him.
  5. There are always more players rumored to be non-tendered than actually wind up being non-tendered. What usually happens is that most of the non-tender candidates get traded before the deadline. http://www.mlb4u.com Review the list of arb eligibles for players eligible for the 3rd time who play for low budget teams. Those guys are usually likely candidates. Craig Wilson is an example.
  6. What about Conine? You have a platoon of Green and Conine, you get the productive platoon and the versatility of a player able to play both LF and RF as well as the IF. The bench probably looks like... Conine Patterson Perez Mabry Blanco Hairston Craig Wilson.
  7. I see you taking this crackpot's job very soon.
  8. he has to play to make the money, doesn't he? Just enough to keep off the suspended list, I suppose.
  9. Sign a minor league contract (which will probably pay him at least a million bucks if he makes the team), work your butt off to make the team and guarantee your paycheck, then go into Operation Shutdown. Jimenez is a genius!
  10. Isn't it odd that his willingness to play shows up during the offseason when contracts are being handed out? Stay far, far away from Jimenez.
  11. Link I don't understand why Aubrey Huff's defense is a deal-killer, but Raul Ibanez's isn't.
  12. Grudz. It's a nickname he picked up when he was playing poorly for us.
  13. Royals sign Pudz and Gabor. Mient!@#$%^& and Elarton, also. Link
  14. I'd be grateful if you could point me to documentation on how Prior's signing bonus is being paid (all at once, year-by-year). Thanks.
  15. Michael Barrett, 4.13M Where did this come from? Is there a published year-by-year breakdown of Barrett's contract anywhere? Mark Prior, 3.55M This would include 1/5th of his signing bonus. I have always assumed that his signing bonus was paid a long time ago, even though MLB takes it up across the guaranteed years of the contract. Is there a published report saying how it actually was/will be paid to Prior?
  16. So if you include Walker and Patterson which sounds like they might be back on the roster next year and include the raises to the arb elgible players it doesn't seem like we have much left. Walker is already included in that $86. Raises for arb eligible Pierre, Zambrano, and Ohman are already in there. Salaries for arb eligible Patterson and Hairston are not in there, because I'm not certain yet they're going to be on the ball club. Once they get tendered contract offers, I'll put them in tentatively.
  17. $5.5 for Pierre. $6.0 for Zambrano.
  18. Oops, pardon me. Walker should be on that list. $86+ for 22 players. I didn't include Patterson. I'm only including the following: Players under contract Arb eligible players I'm fairly sure will be on the club 0-3 guys I'm fairly sure will be on the club
  19. The Cubs payroll stands at a little over $86 with the following 21 players: Matt Murton Juan Pierre Aramis Ramirez Ronny Cedeno Derrek Lee Michael Barrett Neifi Perez John Mabry Henry Blanco Greg Maddux Mark Prior Glendon Rusch Carlos Zambrano Will Ohman Scott Eyre Roberto Novoa Michael Wuertz Scott Williamson Bobby Howry Ryan Dempster Kerry Wood
  20. The Cubs need a RF - preferably LHH - who can be counted on to post an OPS in the low .800s. Said OPS should preferably not be too heavily based on SLG. The Cubs need a quality 4th OF. The Cubs need their leadership not to ship off Todd Walker in favor of Jerry Hairston and/or Neifi Perez. The Cubs need some good luck with Kerry Wood. The Cubs could use another starting pitcher but aren't really in desperate straits there. Is that a sticky wicket on December 15th? That's for each individual to decide.
  21. No harm in asking, but I imagine that either... ...he knows and was told off-the-record, which is why he didn't print it - in which case, he's surely not going to post it here, or... ...he doesn't know.
  22. Hoops, my guess is that he really doesn't want to trade either one. I imagine that he looks at the rotation with next year in mind. Maddux is probably gone. Who knows about Wood? Rusch may prove to be terrible rather than just mediocre. I doubt that he wants to put himself in the position of having to sign two $21-$27/3 Esteban Loaiza-Matt Morris type mediocrities. I imagine that he's trying to fill RF using nothing more than Patterson, Walker, Wellemeyer, and minor leaguers as bait. If that's the case, I wish him luck. If he can't do it and he winds up signing Preston Wilson as a bridge to Pie, I just hope he wises up and keeps Walker. I'm no big Todd Walker fan, but we'll need his bat in such a case.
  23. I've been operating under the assumption that Hendry is more willing to trade Williams than Hill. I doubt that Williams is going to turn into the kind of pitcher that you deeply regret trading away. I doubt that Hill is likely to, either, but I think there's a small chance that he could "Go Willis" on him and he's afraid to trade him except for a real difference maker. And there's the rub. He's probably not valuable enough to get you a difference maker, but he might be too valuable to trade for a Huff type. If Williams is largely off-limits, I would imagine that that is largely at Dusty's request.
  24. Near as I can tell, the Cubs have 5 trade chips on the 40 man roster, who I would consider ML ready, and who I think Hendry is willing to trade: Corey Patterson, Todd Walker, Jerry Hairston, Rich Hill and Glendon Rusch. I guess we can add Ronny Cedeno to the list, if the trade is for another SS. What combination of those players would net us the OFs you have listed above? Do we believe that Hendry is unwilling to trade Jerome Williams?
