  1. By that logic, cocaine is legal if you have a prescription. So is vicodin, morphine, and other narcotics. That's great. Steroids and HGH are legal with a prescription, too.
  2. Keep in mind though, that the minor league coverage is now done by Kevin Goldstein, formerly of Baseball America. The newsletter guy? Didn't know that.
  3. While I really enjoy Baseball Prospectus' MLB articles and coverage, both their minor league and draft analysis leave a lot to be desired. I still chuckle at their Brendan Harris - Albert Pujols comparison from a few years back.
  4. I thought there was a blood test for HGH now. Anyway, I agree that HGH is likely at the root of the size increase in NFL players. I'd be surprised if steroids still weren't widely used as well.
  5. The average size of lineman has jumped significantly over the past 20 years. The fridge was huge in 1985 at 305 lbs. How many NFL players tip the scales at over 300 lbs these days? Heck, how many college kids do? Players don't get that much bigger that quickly without some help. It's the white elephant in the room for the NFL, and nobody cares because few lineman are in the spotlight.
  6. I'd be disappointed if this proved to be true, but not shocked. His home run rate before he got hurt this year was Bonds-ian.

  8. Remember to set your lineups.
  9. And you had that overdraft idea connected to drafting Samardzija at the time?
  10. You've been scooped in social. Regular | Premium
  11. I know that's what the staff at Baseball America suspects, but that might not be the case. Samardzija wasn't guaranteed to be there in the 5th round. It's possible they're just very high on Colvin. But everybody was predicting that's what they'd do. I think it's pretty hard to come up with a different storyline than what Jon is laying out. Many predicted them taking a flyer on Samardzija in the 5th. No one had them "overdrafting" in the first to save money to sign him until they drafted Colvin. I'm not convinced the picks are related.

It's possible they're just very high on Colvin. If you drop the "on Colvin" part from the end of that post, it's a more likely assessment in my opinion. I'm with Jon on this one. Fair enough. We won't know how this draft will turn out for months if not years. I don't think it's worth the angst at present.

  14. Can't argue with craig's logic. And they'll only be out a 5th round pick. I don't see this as a make or break decisions by the Cubs. They could end up with nothing out of their first two picks in this draft, but that's always the most likely scenario. If they sign Jeff as craig suggests, I like the gamble. Makes for good copy and fun debates if nothing else.
  15. I think they believe there's a chance he could decide not to play in the NFL and they're willing to give him a year to figure things out, especially if they get him signed quickly and playing short-season ball this summer. I think it's very likely he'll have to pick one sport over the other at some point, so that seems like a safe bet. I don't know if they're counting on him falling in the NFL draft or not. I think they're betting a 5th-round-pick that his love of baseball will win out. If he gets guaranteed first round money, I'll be a lot more critical of the pick.
  16. If he devotes himself to baseball exclusively, it sounds like he does have star potential. He's very raw at the moment with lots of room for improvement on his consistency and pitching mechanics. I think both his fastball and slider have the potential to turn into plus pitches. Well then that's the key isn't it, getting him to quit football. You can't turn a raw "body" into a star pitcher if he's playing another sport. I don't think anyone's debating that. I'm certainly not. I was just responding to your comment about his ceiling.

  18. Ichiro, Nomar off the top of my head. College statistics have very limited predictive value as well.
  19. And a much quicker big payday. And I'd say your last point has to be true. Pitching prospects of his caliber don't have a great success rate. WR aren't the easiest to predict either, but it's better than pitchers. How much of a signing bonus does a WR take in the 10-16 range in the draft receive? Base NFL salary's in the 300K range, right? How about the 10th pick in 2005: "The Lions signed Williams to a five year contract on August 1, 2005. ESPN.com reports the deal is worth $13.5 million, $10.5 million of which is guaranteed." A pitcher signs his first baseball deal, toils in the minors for a while, and his arbitration clock doesn't start ticking until his callup. His first real big payday as a Cubs wouldn't be for another 5 years, assuming his arbitration clock starts up in 2 years. And at that point he might make $6 million? He could be on his 2nd big NFL signing bonus by then. Thanks for digging that info up. Is that a high percentage of guaranteed money for an NFL deal or is that typical?

  21. I don't get why the Cubs would do that. He's pretty much a lock to stay with football right? I could see a team with lots of picks taking their chances on a guy like this, but when you have only two picks in 5 rounds why waste one on a guy that's not going to play baseball? Perhaps he's not a lock to stay with football. At this point, he's the top-rated senior WR in the draft; even ahead of guys like USC's Steve Smith, Washington State's Jason Hill, and TTU's Jarett Hicks. I've seen a few mock drafts projecting him into the top 10 picks. I really can't see him leaving football right now. That doesn't take into account juniors - Dwayne Jarrett (USC) and Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech) should go ahead of Smardzja - Teddy Ginn (Ohio State) might too. I don't think Smardzja's a top-10 pick next April. Very true, he is probably the 3rd best behind Jarrett and Johnson. He'll have the best QB of the 3 though, and will have better pieces around him IMO. If he goes crazy this year I think he's easily top 10; even if he has about an average year I have a hard time seeing him fall out of the top 12-15 range where he'd still get more money they in the MLB draft. Guys that are 6'5", fast, and can catch are rather rare and are highly rewarded in the NFL. Given an equal chance for success in both sports, I think it's a no brain-er to pick MLB over the NFL. Higher average pay, guarantee contracts, less chance of severe injury, better long term health, etc. He could have a much better chance at success in the NFL, of course.
  22. Drew Henson did. He signed with the Yankees and suited up for the Wolverines, right?
  23. Yep, BA has the top 200 draft prospects written up like that. MLB.com has a Draft Tracker available similar to their Game Trackers (flash pop-up with pick details). Link is on http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/events/draft/y2006/index.jsp
