He did show a nice mid-range game in college games, actually, according to scouts. He played his role on LSU, and that didn't include taking his game outside. Deng certainly didn't use all of his skills during his Freshman year at Duke. Do you read a lot of the draft coverage materials? Your opinion of Thomas is definitely in the minority in those circles. Did you make up your mind watching him play in the NCAA tournament?

Deng was not very polished offensively. He was drafted on potential. Thomas' offensive game is a lot better than you think. He's shown a nice mid-range game in workouts and 3-pt range on his shot. I'd be fine with the pick if Pax decided to take Roy. I wouldn't be happy if he took Morrison, though.

All signs point to the Hawks taking Sheldon at number 5. It would take one of the young core guys to trade up that high, most likely -- presuming the Hawks were even interested.

Roy is more athletic than I thought, but Thomas is still my guy at number 2. 7-3 wingspan, 9-0 standing reach, 40-inch vertical, plays with a chip on his shoulder. How many college games has he played? Do we have a good enough sample size to know anything other than he is "toolsy" (to use a baseball term)? He looks to be more of an athlete than a basketball player. From what I have read, it sounds like Pax prefers him. If he does, I am disappointed, but I'll hope to eat crow come next season. How many college games did Deng play?

  6. They're my 2nd favorite team. "No, you're schmoopy."

That's way too much to give up for Ray Allen. Allen is a good player, but Sweetney and the 16th is enough for a guy who will kill our cap space. I wouldn't want Allen for much more than that, but I doubt Seattle trades him for a mid-first pick and a 20-minute-a-night PF. I bet it'd take the number 2 pick to get him.

  10. That's just silly. His pitches would be more polished at this point if he had concentrated on baseball, and that's what makes his potential intriguing. You can argue he's not worth the risk, but nonsensical hyperbole doesn't make your case. so say he has lots of upside like you would for anybody else. maybe if andrew miller trained an extra hour everyday he'd be even better, i guess detroit really got a steal. I don't think there's anything wrong with suggesting he has more room for improvement than Miller because he's a lot more raw. And he's raw because he hasn't devoted as much time to baseball as typical college players do. Yes, but that is just a theory. Maybe he's as good as he would be. Maybe not. Personally, I don't see what's so silly aboout Treebeard's post. I guess we've all been conditioned to hope for the best amonst all those toolsy picks Hendry seems to be infatuated with. Whatever the case, with only 2 picks in the first five rounds maybe the Cubs did need to take a long shot. then again maybe not. We can play the maybe, maybe not game with every draft, and yes, you do have to hope for the best too. The failure rate is far too high across the board not to do so.

Where did you read that? That might have been accurate a year ago, but he shed 25 pounds last summer and scouts have reported him having a 40-inch vert. He wasn't invited to the combine so we don't have access to an official measurement on that. NBAdraft.net The Bulls really could use a big man who can play D, so I have to think the pick will be Thomas or Aldridge. I wouldn't be surprised to see Pax nab Roy. Didn't expect him to draft Hinrich, and then I didn't expect him to draft Gordon. Looking forward to finding out. Scouts Inc.'s take on Johnson:

Not at all. Lots of prognosticators expect Toronto to take Bargnani if they keep the pick. They might trade down -- with Portland, for instance -- and draft him later though. If that happened, Portland would tab Morrison most likely.

Ford has the Bulls drafting Tyrus Thomas and Thabo Sefolosha in his third mock draft today, but he claims it's almost neck and neck between Thomas and Roy for the number 2 pick. If the Bulls take Roy instead of Thomas, he thinks Alexander Johnson could be their guy at 16.

  18. Thanks for editing your post, NUCubEra. It's done.
  19. Unless it was just announced and I missed it, we don't know how the contract is structured yet. It could contain escalator clauses that don't kick in unless he quits football. It's worth $8M if he quits football, but $XM if he doesn't, etc.
  20. It would be guaranteed. He could always choose to retire and forfeit the money, but it is guranteed. He gets it if he keeps playing, just like every other baseball player. To claim that it's not guaranteed just because he might quit is just the same as saying Randy Johnson's contract isn't guaranteed because he might quit. There is very little chance he'd walk away from that guaranteed money unless some NFL team offered guarantees above and beyond what he'd be giving up. And that is unlikely to happen given the nature of a structured salary cap league like the NFL. I thought you were convinced he was going to take the larger NFL signing bonus and run?
  21. Not if they made goals worth some arbitrary number like 6.
  22. From what I've read, MLB can pressure the Cubs but can't block it completely. Yep, MLB can make their feelings on the matter clear, but that's all they can do. Both EPatt and Grant Johnson were signed to contracts well above slot money, for example. It's one thing to offer an 8th round pick like E-Patt 3rd round money... it's another to offer a 5th round pick more money than any other player in the draft. In terms of MLB's power to stop it, it's the same thing.
  23. I won't be happy if the $8M is guaranteed, but college statistics have very limited predictive value. Well, I'm not trying to project his major league career based off of it, but the guy isn't striking out many guys, giving up a lot of hits, and has a poor K/BB, and at the college level against a schedule that isn't extremely difficult. I understand that good college performance isn't a guarantee to carry over to professional baseball, but how is a mediocre college performer supposed to become a good major leaguer? The only thing I can think of is some correctable flaw, which means they're gambling 8 million that they can fix him. Not a good situation IMO. C'mon, you know the further the level of play gets away from MLB, the less useful stats become. I take anything under AA with a grain of salt, and college stats are just too far away to support your point.
