  1. I met enos slaughter in cooperstown!!! You had to pay him 20 bucks or something if you wanted his autograph, and he only signed pictures that were sold at the shop he was at that costed 10 dollars or something.
  2. HItting Coach? I sorta like the sound of the Chambliss guy who was fired by the reds.
  3. http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/ ?
  4. What does that mean? I think he was referring to his year off. I don't understand what that has to do with winning though.
  5. That analogy doesn't work unless you have chess pieces that move themselves. Also, if that chess player with only pawns is playing against a similarly skilled chess player with his normal pieces he will most certainly lose. Sure, Baker with a bunch of scrubs could beat some high school team but even Earl Weaver couldn't make the scrubs into a winning team against average major league competition.
  6. How does he pronounce his name? If it's pronounced the way the blonde on CSN Sportsnite said it last night, I don't think I could handle having him on the staff next year. If its not Quade like Quaid as in Randy and Dennis then I agree.
  7. If Hendry doesn't even make a bid I will be severely dissappointed.
  8. RAZOR!!!!!!! seriously though, besides the frequent BA quotes and the amazing name, anyone know much about this guy? The last time a manager was needed I wanted Wally Backman for no reason at all and this time I want Razor Shines for no reason at all. I guess my only reason is that I don't think a manager has much of an affect on a team, and therefore less spent on manager=more money spent on players=more talent=more wins. Of course with Hendry it seems that more money spent on players=more money spent on mediocre players.
  9. I think your reasoning for not going after Schmidt could easily be applied to Matsuzaka as well.
  10. Wastra, I respect your opinion and I used to love reading your posts even back in the ESPN message board days, but better check your numbers again. Considering the real stats, It is ridiculous to say that average major league pitchers would have a .330 OBP over the course of 700 at bats. It just isn't realistic. Pierre is not a great CF, but he has still put up a respectable career OBP of .350, he still has decent speed and he can still steal bases. The problem with your argument is that you are only acknowledging the negatives and spinning them by making his numbers worse than they actually are. I'm pretty sure that sabrmeterics do not MEAN that. What I find funny is that the same people that will take Murton's second half numbers and use them to make the case that he is better/equal to Carlos Lee, will completely discount Pierre's numbers since June. Especially considering Pierre's career OBP was much higher than he was playing earlier in the season. If Pierre could revert back to his career OBP or sustain his sucess that he had from June through October, he would have some value to some team. Heck, he would even be a viable leadoff candidate. That isn't even close to what he was saying. He just said that his average OBP for all players included pitchers, meaning that if you took the pitchers data out and recalculated the average times reached base then the number would be higher. Possibly higher than Juan Pierres.
  11. I don't understand the Listach comment. Care to elaborate O_O?
  12. i would start with pitching-after watching Detroit just dominate the yankees, i'm convinced pitching is the ticket to spend on. I dont re-sign Blanco- i let Soto backup Barrett-saves me 1.5. Also, i believe Rusch will retire thus freeing up another 3.25M-thus i have 27.75M to spend Sign Schmidt 4/48( 11,12,12,13) Trade Jones(5)+Novoa+Ohman(1)+Ryu to Dodgers for Drew(11) Re-sign Wade Miller 1 yr@ 2.5M( mutual option for 2nd year with 1M buyout) Re-sign Woody-1 yr@ 1M plus incentives+3M buyout) money spent=18.9M Sign David Dellucci to 2 yr 5M deal (2,3) to play OF and the bench 20.9M spent......leaving 7M to spend-(soto costs me 300k) Sign Lofton to 1 year 2M deal Trade Marshall(350k)+Murton(350k)+Izturis(4.3)+Dempster(5)+Marmol(350k) to Baltimore for Tejada(12)-only 1.65M goes against payroll- leaving me 3.35M Sign Mark DeRosa to 2yr 5M(2,3) Sign Miguel Cairo to 1 yr 1.35M theres 23M spent- CF-Lofton(2M) LF-Dellucci(2M) SS-Tejada(12M) 1B-Lee(13M) 3B-Aram(11M) RF-Drew(11M) C-Barrett(4.3) 2B-Theriot(300k) total=55.6M Zambrano(10) Schmidt(11) Hill(350k) Miller(2.5M) Prior(4.2M) total=28M Bench- Soto(300k) Pagan(300k) Moore(300k) Cedeno(300k) DeRosa(2M) Cairo(1.35M) total=4.55M Wood(1M) Eyre(3.5M) Howry(4M) Wuertz(350k) Aardsma(350k) Guzman/Mateo(350k) total=9.55M total payroll of=97.7M i'd take that team I don't think Derosa would sign for that little, nor do I think he would sign for a bench role. I'll get to mine later on. Class is calling.
  13. No way Florida trades Hermida for Cedeno and Jones.
  14. I'd prefer him to replace Hendry. More interesting from that article is this: Why, Jim, why?
  15. I really think he is. Not saying he deserve's it. But salaries are outa control and the FA class sucks. Friendly wager Luke? 8) What do you have in mind?
  16. If he hits .260 is like saying if Murton hits 50 HRs it will be a monster season. Dunn has only hit .260 once as a full-time player. Dunn for Jones - great. Dunn for Jones plus a pitching prospect - maybe. Dunn for Hill or Prior - no way. No its not, Dunn has hit 260 in his career, Murton has not hit 17 HRs in a season, let alone 50. Don't be ridiculous. He's hit .260 only once as a regular. I don't think Murton will ever hit 50 HRs, but I doubt Dunn will hit .260 again either. There were many posts about ARam not hustling, but at least he doesn't look like a giant Sequoia out in LF. Dunn is a total mope with a lousy BA and lousy defense who gives you 3 possibilities at the plate: HR, BB, or K. That being said I stand by my statement that if the Cubs can get him cheaply okay, but I wouldn't offer much. Actually, I think the whole discussion is moot since Cincy wouldn't trade him to a division rival anymore than the Cubs would trade someone like Prior to a division rival. Facing Dunn or Prior could come back to haunt their original teams for the next decade. Statistically speaking, even a player who's true ability gives him a batting average of .230, has a fairly good chance of hitting .260 just due to random variablility.
  17. so you're saying Jim Hendry is going to sign him for 9mill??? exactly.
  18. There is no flipping way Meche gets 9 million. If he does end up getting even close to that much it will be from a stupid organization that thinks splits are just a delicious dessert made with ice cream and bananas.
  19. two questions. Why did Leyland put his best reliever in a 6 run game? (I know it was only for a few pitches, but it still seems pretty foolish to me) and, Why does Verlander strike out so few batters while throwing so hard?
  20. Your mention of the hit and run just severely soured me on Girardi. The hit and run may very well be the worst call a manager can make, outside of choosing who plays. If the Cubs never again called for the hit and run as long as I lived, I'd feel much more confident in our ability to win a World Series before I die. No problem, there. It's just a form of baseball that I like to watch. I like the bunt too. The trick is, the players have to execute for that form of baseball to be effective. They did it in 89, and that is the year I fell in love with the Cubs. It's good baseball, and that is just my opinion. players are more effective when they're failing to execute bunts than when they're successful. whatever you've seen, it's wrong. ??????? Dustyism? Yeah that confuses me. Unless you mean that they can't get the bunt down and are forced to swing away with two strikes and in that case i'm not so sure they are very likely to get on base anyways, so it might have been better to move the runner up. I hate sacrifice bunts by the way, but I would order the effectiveness like so: Swinging away(generally speaking)>succesful sacrifice>failed sacrifice.
  21. If hendry were smart enough to realize that Lou was a horrible choice then I bet he would have already fired himself. :(
  22. I'm guessing that was you, kc? I don't understand why Moore didn't make it and klines answer didn't really clear anything up for me.
  23. I don't like that deal considering Hudson's big salary in 08 and 09 (13 million) and especially due to his down year. I think if we go after him we should try to do it with a lesser player than murton, which I think would be possibly because it seems that the braves need to cut some payroll. Also why would you put Byrnes of the .322 career obp in the two hole? With his decent power it seems like he would fit best hitting 6th or 7th.
