  1. so you think the cubs are going to be run as a small market team and never sign big ticket free agents any more? or just that you will be reading the same things on nsbb every offseason? I read that as him saying that doubters will always be able to find fault with high end FAs. They shouldn't be afraid to sign Fielder precisely because they're not a small market team. Or maybe that's just what I think. I personally see very little risk in signing Fielder. He's not blocking anybody, plays a position that should allow him to remain healthy and fills a position of obvious need. Worst case scenario he's a good player on a bad team. If the Cubs still aren't good in 3 years I doubt they'd have much trouble moving Fielder to an AL team if nothing else.
  2. why put off jay learning a new offense another year? and why replace smith when he wasn't the problem? lovie has been a good coach, he's been a level head and he's well-respected among all of his players. i'm betting that the bears' brass knew that they may have a full-scale mutiny on their hands if they got rid of lovie, the 4 leaders of this defense are sworn to him. i don't believe that lovie is on his last legs with this franchise and i wouldn't be surprised to see him extended before they hire a new coordinator, as a token of good faith for both he and the incoming OC. like i said, if they want to get a GM that's comfortable with smith, they'll most likely hire mckenzie. mckenzie and smith will work together, find a new OC from outside the organization and start fresh. we CAN start fresh with our old coach, as i said, the defense isn't the problem, it works. let's focus on getting the offense in shape with a new, fresh system that cutler can drive right away. The Cover 2 works because they have Urlacher covering a large amount of the middle of the field. We saw what happened without him. Even with Urlacher, good QBs (like Rogers, Brees, Manning) pick the cover 2 apart unless they can get a pass rush using only the 4 linemen.
  3. 1/3 seems high. He's a good hitter relative to other starting pitchers but maybe he'd pitch better if he didn't have to run the bases. We have no way of knowing how much he thinks about hitting when he's supposed to be pitching. By which I mean that he may go to the mound pissed because he struck out and try to overthrow and start walking people. It seems like there have also been times when he lost his effectiveness on the mound after getting a hit in the previous half inning. No, I don't have any stats to back that up.
  4. This has been a truly bizarre thread. I'm glad to see Angelo go simply because I believe that offensive line makes or breaks any football team. A good o line makes all of the skill players, especially the QB, look better. It also helps take pressure off the defense by being able to run the ball and hold a lead. Angelo made some good picks in the mid rounds and he got Cutler and Peppers. That's not all that impressive of a resume. The fact that there are worse options doesn't justify keeping a GM that hasn't done what we want which is buld a perennial contender.
  5. Wouldn't an AL team be more likely to give him a longer deal with the idea that he'd play 1st base for the first 4 years and then be able to move to DH if necessary down the road? I get that they don't pay a DH 20 million per but having that option would help justify overpaying in the short term to still get useful production down the road?
  6. I'm sure there are a lot more direct flights to Chicago than there are to Toronto. Probably more of a hassle since it's a foreign country. Do you need a passport to go to Canada? There was a time when you didn't but that was before 9/11. Seems like no one really wants to sign with Toronto but every FA that can flirts with them for leverage.
  7. I wonder where the random line generator will place him. I think we may see Morin on the 2nd line w/ Kruger and Hossa with Sharp on the top line with Kane and Toews. What kind of player is Morin defensively? I'm not one of those people that's looking to move Stalberg down to the 4th line but that might make the most sense putting him with Myers and Carcillo.
  8. And they spent half the time talking about how hockey fans complain about a lack of coverage on ESPN. So meta. Point taken. It's just a shame that they couldn't put hockey on at least one of their networks. Even the Ocho would be better than the sparse coverage on VS.
  9. There's a tangible benefit. Theo obviously doesn't want the rest of the league (agents and teams) to know what he's going to do. Keep all options open while you negotiate what you want. Keep fans interested in the names they hear. This would hardly be the first time the Cubs showed interest in the top names all winter only to come away with something else. It's practically Cubs Marketing 101 (while acquiring your biggest piece before the convention is Cubs Marketing 201). Coming in 2nd or 3rd in every major free agent bidding is also known as the MacPhail Doctrine. "We made what we thought was a fair offer"- The Hendry Corollary.
  10. They actually showed highlights of this on espn! Yes, that espn! Who told them that hockey had already started?
  11. I started going to Cubs games in the late 70's, but I was still pretty young then. From my recollections (probably moreso the early 80's) it was always a McDonald's. We'd get food there and then take it into Wrigley to eat while we watched BP. That corner was the home Franksville in the 60's through the early 70's. Not sure when it changed hands, or if there was another tenant between Franksville and McDonalds. What's Franksville? Franksville! Thanks Fred. They sold hot dogs and the usual Chicago stuff. THOUGH I WOULDN'T KNOW FIRST HAND SINCE WE HAD TO EAT STUPID HOMEADE SANDWICHES INSTEAD OF BUYING FOOD AT THE PARK LIKE EVERYONE ELSE! Not that I'm bitter or anything. Actually, Franksville probably sucked and being too cheap was just my mom's way of protecting me.
  12. Is that similar to the HCCF malfunctioning robot? Because that always makes me smile.
  13. Didn't Lepisto take a pretty hard hit or something against the Sharks? If not, why doesn't Old Donnell sit instead? I can't find it anywhere, who did they bring up to replace Smith on the roster?
  14. How long has it been a McDonalds? I seem to remember it being something else when I was a kid during the late '70s. I always wanted to eat there but never got to go.
  15. I have no animosity for Koyie Hill since he wasn't the one that got to decide when and how much he'd play. I did my celebrating when they got rid of Quade.
  16. 35.5, lowest of the week. Good thing I don't bet on the NFL because I'd be getting a second mortgage to put on the under.
  17. What's the over under on this game? That would go a long way toward explaining the 4 point line. It's hard to imagine either of these teams scoring more than 2 TDs unless there is a pick six or kick return. Hanie is awful but Jackson is equally bad. The Seahwaks have a more dynamic running back. Seahawks 13 Bears 9
  18. I like Ben Smith but I thought he was over hyped after having a couple of good games in the playoffs last year. He will be a solid 3rd liner down the road. I wonder if they need Bickell to get some playing time to showcase for a trade? I think we need to get Bickell some playing time because they really need him to contribute. I think you're right about Smith though. He hustled but just seemed to be overmatched in the corners. I kinda get the feeling that Ben Smith is Ryan Theriot on skates. He's undersized, scrappy and not as good as the average fan thinks. The difference being that Smith is a lot smarter than Theriot who, for a grit guy, seemed to make remarkably dumb mistakes. I'd like to see them bring up Pirri for a while. Pirri has been doing pretty well at Rockford but more importantly it would allow the Hawks the chance to give Bolland a chance to get fully healthy. He seems to need that. In other "news", I'm sorry to see Klinkhammer get traded. I have a friend with that same last name.
  19. Not sure if anyone else saw/ posted this but I was watching Hot Stove on the MLB and Gammons said the Cubs don't have the money to sign Fielder right now. Gammons of course is usually wrong about anything not Red Sox related so grain of salt and all.
  20. I find it hard to believe that the Cubs would punt this year. If all they did the rest of the offseason was sign Fielder they would have a chance to compete in a division where their main rivals both just lost their best player (arguable in the case of the Brewers though losing Fielder certainly has to hurt) Whatever package people think they can get for Garza will still be there at the deadline and should probably be at least slightly better. Same goes for Soto and Marmol. It's all well and good to restock the farm system but they still have to sell tickets and they aren't going to when they are once again going into a season where no one seriously expects them to be any good. If they were going to try and market a new look, young guns, type team they probably would have already started that by now.
  21. I'd really like to see the Hawks in DC once a year.
  22. But they keep doing dumb things to remind you though this wouldn't be one of them. Otherwise, yes, they're no more worth hating than the Seattle Seahawks.
  23. I think Scotty Bowman made the meddler who likes to shake things up style of coaching quite common. Fair enough. But the perception that most people have is that everybody makes the playoffs in Hockey. With all the talent the Blackhawks have, for them to miss the playoffs they'd have to have seriously underachieved and that usually falls on the coach.
  24. If the Blackhawks don't make the playoffs this year, Q will most certainly be fired. Q is a meddler that's constantly trying to shake things up. That makes him very easy for even a casual fan to second guess his effectiveness/ ability/ knowledge. Sooner or later, even dumb people will realize that playing Scott in a non emergency situation is a terrible idea, so he'll have that working against him as well.
  25. It seems like Crawford is suffering the same thing that plagued Hjalmerson last year: after signing the big contract he started trying to do too much and got away from what he does well that got him the big contract in the first place. At what point should we start worrying that Crawford was a flash in the pan? Not yet but a couple more weeks of erractic play and the panic button will start glowing red.
