  1. I've always been skeptical of the notion that Greg was a great teacher who could help guys just from being around them. It's rare for an elite player to translate what he was able to do into an equally successful coaching gig. First thing he said when they brought him back as a player was basically "I'm not here to teach guys how to pitch".
  2. You left out "mine as well" from the triple crown of hurting words. You're also underestimating the talent level already in place. A reasonably healthy year from the starting rotation and last year's team at least threatens .500. It's hard to say what they'll do next season until they replace Ramirez. A team with the Cubs resources has no business throwing in the towel in November.
  3. No hate for Jimmy Rollins?
  4. Keith is better when paired with Seabrook. John Scott being terrible makes Keith have to play 30 minutes a game which is insane. Neither Crawford nor Emery are as bad as they played this weekend. But if you have to blame someone, I nominate Ben Smith.
  5. Isn't this self fullfilling prophecy? I could see perhaps giving LaHair a shot if he was the bridge to a better option that isn't quite ready. The Cubs don't really have anybody like that.
  6. Yes, he's all of those things: too lazy to avoid getting hit, too selfish because he picked the ball up and threw the batter out instead of lettong one of his teammates get the assit and stupid because he shouldn't have risked the throw but picked the ball up, ran over and tagged the batter out. Which leads back to being crazy, he should have tebowed afterwards instaed of pointing to the sky.
  7. Ben Smith replaces Rust eze who is now in Rockford. Hopefully this means no more Scott at forward ever again.
  8. Yup. At first I thought they were going to call off the goal, but the posts stayed in position thankfully. What happens if a player very obviously purposely pushes the goal off the moorings during a scoring opportunity for the other team? Depending on the situation, the refs have the discretion to call a penalty shot, give a minor penalty, or award a goal. In practice, if a player is determined to have deliberately knocked the goal off the moorings -- as almost happened last night -- that would be ruled a goal. Can they award the goal and an unsportsmanlike minor? They ought to, otherwise why not give it a try?
  9. Stir Fry Crazy. It makes Soriano to 3rd look like viable option in comparison
  10. It seems to me that having players that get on base/ don't make outs wins in any conditions.
  11. I'm still hung over. Jay missed quite a few passes last night from where I was sitting. He had some open guys for potential big gains that he just missed. He played well overall though. Man I love beating the kiddie rapist supporting eagles. There was a stretch in the 2nd quarter where he was really really off and looked horrible. He got better though. It looked like he was getting frustrated with Hester and Sanzenbuckeye dropping catchable balls 2 plays in a row.
  12. What would KC being willing to give up though? I don't doubt they'd take Zambrano for free with the Cubs paying his salary but that doesn't make sense for the Cubs.
  13. Name a guy on that list that you would have sworn had already retired. I'll go first: Jason Kendall
  14. Why would Smardz to the rotation surprise anyone? Didn't they consider it before the start of last season? It's not like they couldn't move him back to the pen if things didn't work out. Seems like a move with very little risk.
  15. Quit lying to people. Carmine looks just like a Dalek from Dr. Who. And it's eats old people's medicine for fuel!
  16. Just to throw a little gas on the fire: Epstein said he had a "great conversation" with Quade the other day. Quade manages the last year of his deal and then Maddon comes in after his TB contract expires. That seems more plausible. How would Joe Maddon's managerial style play in the NL?
  17. And was he really a good player? Mattingly was the face of the franchise for a long period of time. Girardi was a complementary player. I should have expressed that difference more clearly.
  18. As a general rule, great players are better off managing a team from a different franchise. Don Mattingly, for example, is much better off not being the manager of the Yankees since he would have zero margin for error due to ridiculous expectations. Conversely, It's OK for Girardi to manage the Yankees because he was a good player that played for other teams and that helps temper expectations.
  19. Over the course of an 82 game season season I'm glad they limit the OT time. No reason to make these guys play that much harder for 5 more minutes a night. 5 seems too short and 10 would be too long. What about 7 minutes? That might involve play from an extra line and lead to a settlement. I dislike shootouts in any sport.
  20. I expect Wilson to get close to $20 million per since both the Yankees and Red Sox need starting pitching. I'd expect Oswalt to get around $12 million per for 3 years. The Phillies weren't willing to give him $16 million. That suggests that the market for him is somewhere between 10-14 million. I consider 6-8 million to be significant.
  21. 2 out of 3 ain't bad? Maybe they see Lahair as a bridge to Vitters? That seems like a reach to me.
  22. He'd be significantly cheaper and to a certain extent is more of a known commodity.
  23. What could be more disasterous than the last 2 seasons?
  24. Did I miss something? Why do people think Pujols will stay with the Cards?
  25. Maybe they can do to Z what the Red Sox did to Manny Ramirez a few years ago: put him on waivers and, when no one claims him, welcome him back with a new perspective of his value. That could send the message to Z that no one else will put up with his antics. A motivated Z could solve a lot of the Cubs' problems. Winning would also take care of a lot of that stuff too.
