  1. They have a better fulltime catcher, but Victor still caught 20-something games for them last year, and he's gone. I doubt they want their young guy catching 162. Plus Soto derives most of his value from the fact that he's had 2 fantastic offensive seasons, and there is reason to believe he can do it again, especially if he was able to DH a lot. Couldn't you say the same thing for the Yankees? They are talking about DH by committee. I honestly have no idea who the starting ctacher for the Yankees is going to be.
  2. Eli Manning strikes me as a whiner who makes that "the reciever ran the wrong route" face every time something goes wrong. Of all the reasons to dislike Brady, having played at Michigan is not very high on the list but it's still on the list. If Brady wins, I'd still take Joe Montana. It seems like the Giants defense gets more credit for the first super bowl win. Also his recievers that made incredible catches at critical times. Whether that's fair or not is open to debate. If the Giants win this one, he'll probably get most of the credit.
  3. I'm not sure, but I don't believe the Pats have ever covered as favorites in the super bowl. 3 points is their smallest spread however. It's hard to take the Giants seriously considering that they only won 1 more regular season game than the Bears. Yet they somehow still manage to win. The Ravens fans here were complete jerks when Cutler got hurt, so seeing them choke is pretty gratifying. Of course the obnoxius Steelers fans will ruin it by never letting this one die, ever. I think Brady can expose the Giants defense in a way that Smith couldn't. Pats win a shoot out.
  4. This might be the most depressing thing I've heard all off season.
  5. The Nats just gave Morse a new contract. Not sure why they'd do that if they were still in on Fielder.
  6. The Sam's Club here takes Mastercard but doesn't take Visa. That seems weird to me.
  7. The counts listed also help differentiate the hit and run from the straight steal which would seem to happen more often with the batter behind in the count. More to the point, if this study proves that the hit and run is a slight positive in those counts than that suggests it might help define when to start the runner(s).
  8. of all the scrubs that were thrown out there last season, Lopez probably did the least awful. Isn't this what Iowa is for? A placce to store depth role players in case they' re needed?
  9. i read an article, i think it may have been on BP, suggesting that this might be prince's best course of action, since the big market clubs either don't have a need at 1b or haven't shown much interest. maybe by next offseason, the dodgers have sorted out their financial issues and some other big market clubs are looking for a 1b or dh. he can probably get close to $25m on a one year contract so as long as he doesn't have a bad year, he could still be looking at a nice long-term payday. on page 43 I wrote Did whoever wrote that article cite me as a source?
  10. If they're going to replace Jump I vote for Kiss with a Fist by Florence and the Machine. Seems appropriate.
  11. It's not like he signed with the Orioles or Pirates. The Angels are usually pretty good and have just as much if not a better chance of winning than the Cards. He'd be dumb to take substantially less money for a comparable chance to win.
  12. There is nothing at all irrational for hating all that is evil and wrong with the world. Are there any Ravens fans up your way? I'm surrounded by them and know what they are like. It seems like they'd be pretty easy to ignore for the rest of the country.
  13. It's time for the Orioles to drive a truck full of money to Fielder's house. Too bad they won't though.
  14. A less classy Philly, what's not to like? I suppose I should probably give in and start liking the Ravens but they have so many of the same flaws as the Bears (usually good on defense, usually struggle on offense) that it seems a little pointless. Besides their uniforms are too northwesterny for me.
  15. If the Ravens went and won, wouldn't Ray Lewis be obligated to retire?
  16. Yonder Alonso tried it at Cincy and it was a circus. that has nothing to do with anything. Corey Patterson wasn't very good. Therefore no highly regarded Cub prospect can ever be good. By the transitive power, If Alonso can't play LF then Rizzo can't either. Can't you see the obvious logic?
  17. Or they could just keep Burnett to buy time for the development of guys like McNutt, Whitenack, etc. and not be out that much money. The Yankees shouldn't mind that deal either since they can use the $2 they have to spend on Dh for some other need. The problem then becomes finding someone to play LF.
  18. Can he stick at 3rd though, that's the real question. Your MLB line would be good for 3rd base. For left field, not as much.
  19. How long can you take the brother vs brother story line though? That's the real question. Plus, if the Ravens win people will want to ask Ray Lewis questions about stuff. The less we hear from Ray Lewis the better.
  20. Eh, they weren't that far from the Falcons and Lions in advanced statistics. I just chalk it up to a team getting hot and catching some breaks. If they catch any four of the eight passes they dropped the game is a lot closer and forces the Giants to throw more giving them the opportunity to turn the ball over. I feel bad for actual Packers fans having to watch that. East coast bandwagon fans near where I live that had never heard of the packers before last January but suddenly have always bled Packer green, on the other hand, will be hearing about this for a long time.
  21. pretty wide open field It's hard to believe that the 49ers are for real but they sure impressed on Saturday. The Packers pretty much gifted that game to the Giants, the worst NFC team in the playoffs. Yet somehow they seem to win games like this. On the AFC side, the Ravens defense isn't as dominant as it used to be but the Pats haven't played much defense all season. Stopping the Tebows doesn't convince me that they can but Flacco on his backo. I can't believe the Pats are giving 7.5 points. That seems like 3.5 too many. Prediction: Giants lose the superbowl to the Pats just to annoy us with the whole "Boston winning yet another championship" thing.
  22. I just watched a video of Sveum answering some questions and one of the first things he said really made me cringe. Someone asked who the leadoff hitter was...he responded that he couldn't really say yet, although DeJesus was probably the leading candidate...sweet....then he dropped Barney's name. UGH. In what conceivable way is it a good idea to give our worst everyday hitter the most PAs on the team? For [expletive]'s sake. Probably just trying not to hand the job to DeJesus, so that Barney is motivated by thinking he has a chance to not bat 8th. My fear is that Barney will bat 2nd, Castro 3rd and Soto 8th. First time I see that lineup Svuem will have lost my support forever.
  23. cleanup on aisle 3 lol 3rd year of rookie ball. that one's going into my greatest hits folder Didn't Earl Cunningham spend 3 years in rookie ball? It certainly seemed like it at the time.
  24. Honest question, when was the last times the Black Hawks won a game shown on NBC?
  25. This thread got me thinking about star for multiple prospect trades. What was the last trade where the team getting the prospects won? I'm not suggesting that trading Garza is a bad adea by any means. I'm having trouble thinking of a deal that really backfired on the team that was giving the prospects and getting the established player. It just seems like teams really value their prospects more than ever before. I'm sure I'm overlooking some obvious trades so fire away.
