  1. Mather's current line .264 .322 .415 .737. Isn't that almost exactly what we might have realistically expected from Stewart?
  2. I'll admit up front that I'm bordering on being a Vitters apologist. I also understand that Stewart is so unlucky that he is more likely to get hit by a meteor with a winning powerball ticket stuck to the front of it than get a line drive to not be hit right to a fielder. That being said, it's not such a bad idea to bring Vitters up before then (like if he got his AAA ops north of .800) since a sept. call up is a fairly small sample size that's watered down by the presence of other sept. call ups pitching for non contending teams.
  3. This is "boring" because most people don't understand what is happening.
  4. Tony Campana: A Doug Dascenzo for the new generation of Cub fans. Unless he sleeps with Castro's wife, in which case he becomes Dave Martinez.
  5. Why is at bats a bad stat? Is it any worse than hits, HRs or any other non team dependent counting stat? I have to vote W-L as the most overrated stat.
  6. Know I'm late, but I thought I was the only one feeling this way. I can't imagine being happy either with any non Blue Jays or Diamondbacks trade, but seriously someone young in their current rotations would have to be included along with a top 3 prospect and a 2nd top 10 guy. If the Cubs extend Garza before the deadline, doesn't that increase Dempster's value? That would take maybe the best available pitcher off the market (except Hamels if he becomes available). Who's available that's having a better season so far than Dempster?
  7. What's the going rate for the negotiating rights to a player like Parise?
  8. I hope the Kings take care of business tonight so teams can start making moves. Not that anything big will happen real soon but nothing really can happen until the cup is raised.
  9. especially considering he had wrist surgery which gave him virtually no time to practice winning face offs.
  10. I was hoping he'd wait until after Suter signed somewhere other than Detroit.
  11. Yeah but if it's between Hammer and Oduya, I'll take Hammer every day of the week. Sure, the guy provides no offense, but at least he's somewhat sound in his own zone. if you can get past the eye test- which Hammer tends to fail seemingly all the time- and look at the hockey stats, he's one of the better Hawks defensemen. Perhaps signing Oduya is the move that paves the way for trading Hammer in a package for the fabled 2C that many people feel is such a glaring hole. So far, Bowman has refused to trade any of his draftees/ young guys but a package of Hammer, Kruger, Saad and perhaps a draft pick for Jordan Staal (who supposedly wants out of Pittsburgh) might work. Yeah I can tolerate Oduya if a move like that is the end result. But that reminds me of when Tallon signed Huet assuming he'd be able to trade Bulin. It seems like defensemen are in high demand right now, if the previous trade deadline is any indication. Even if the Hawks get stuck with Hammer, it's still not a terrible situation. If Saad makes the roster they can afford to overpay their 3rd pairing defensemen for the time being.

  13. Jammer back too. I don't mind Oduya, especially if it means they are trading Hammer or Montador for a piece somewhere else.
  14. although maybe wsr speaks a regional dialect where "a few" actually means "zero or one" More likely, it's a world where "decent" means 26 year old, Low A pitcher coming off shoulder surgery that once upon a time got a big signing bonus but hasn't done much since who could just as easily be had on the waiver wire in a couple more months. But that's probably a best case scenario.
  15. would have prefered the sweep but I guess it's ok and maybe fitting to see Phonics eliminated at home so all 5 of their fans can show their "support".
  16. I doubt he can get suspended for that but he certainly should get a fine
  17. That is absolutely ridiculous. This column sums up my feelings nicely. http://www.morrisdailyherald.com/2012/05/07/this-is-critical-offseason-for-blackhawks-bowman/ak0ycr2/?page=3
  18. If he was somehow only GM for 2 offseasons maybe I'd agree, but he's been GM since the summer of 09. That's almost 3 full years, not just 2 offseasons. You are a GM all season long and he has yet to do anything to make the Blackhawks a better team than what they were the day before he got the job. In that case, you have to give him credit for winning the cup then. Everyone was screaming for a new goaltender but he held firm with Niemi and won. He could have used the capapocalypse as an excuse to trade say Sharp for a goaltender that season and not won. I doubt we'll agree on this and that's fine. Personally, he has no excuses this off season. He has cap space so he can maneuver under the new, lower cap that everyone expects. He has a short list of holes to fill and plenty of young talent that can one way or another be used to address those needs. This time next year we'll either be talking about what the Hawks need to do to win the WCF or we'll be lighting torches. If it's the later, I'll bring the matches myself.
  19. What small sample? The guy has been here a long time and acquired zero impact players. Everybody good was acquired before he took over. The rest is just a bunch of guys. I have not been the least bit impressed with Bowman and do not understand why so many people were high on him after the past two offseasons. Also, while Oduya may have played all right late in the regular season, the trade itself was by no means good. He gave up way too much for such a mediocre player with no future. 2 off seasons is a small sample, especially considering the first one was try to get anything at all from all the salary dumps everyone in the hockey world knew he was going to have to make. Hard to tell what he got since some of the pieces like Morin for example are still young and learning. He did get Stalberg who was pretty good this season and also Leddy. This season he was able to get a 5th round pick for John Scott. As for him overpaying for Oduya, every other available defense-man went for a lot more despite being perhaps only marginally better. I'm not a Bowman apologist, but I think he gets at least 1 more off season to see what becomes of the moves he's made. Saad and Morin can make him look like a genius. A lot will depend on what happens with the goal tending situation.
  20. There was a coaching problem on the staff with the PP/PK units. Yep. I'm not going to shed a tear if Quenneville leaves for Montreal. I've always thought that the shortcomings on the special teams units were Quenneville's fault as opposed to Kitchen's. After all, he is the head coach. That said, Bowman's more of an issue than Q is. I think you're half right. Too small a sample to really judge Bowman. This year he signed a bunch of old guys to 1 year deals to give the kids more time to develop. Mayers was good. Father time and Brunette were not. Oduya was a good trade until the playoffs where he didn't look so great. Saad looks like a good draft pick and I suppose he got lucky on Shaw. That's a mixed bag Q actually played John Scott in the playoffs on a power play! This season he also refused to put Montador on the PP or the penalty kill. The random line generator is very dusty esque. He rides the core into the ground while guys like Bickell languish in the press box.
  21. Does that speculation mean that they want B Jackson spending the whole season at AAA? Jackson would be playing CF, and they certainly aren't going to put LaHair or Soriano in CF(or RF for that matter), so it probably doesn't have any impact on Jackson. So they bench DeJesus or trade him?

  23. The Flyers looked bad for the 2nd half of that game. I think that they are better off trying to run up the score than try to sit on a 1 goal lead.
  24. Good question Current roster 2 SP 2 RP Possibly 1 other pitcher 1 of Castillo or Clevenger Castro 1 other position player Minors Rizzo B Jackson 2-3 pitchers 12 seems like a reasonable assumption since the Cubs should be able to fill their bench and middle relief with in house options.
  25. It also raised his BABIP about 40 points from ~.275 to ~ .315.
