  1. Our President was a GM at 28. Same with Jon Daniels... Just a little perspective. Obama was a GM at 28? Wow, I had no idea. i haven't seen a birth certificate to prove otherwise This was like rewatching Young Frankenstein. You know what's going to happen but its still funny.
  2. A good mediator will be saying those types of things privately to both sides. But yeah there's no benefit to doing it publicly. Or, as it turns out, privately.
  3. I used Dawson more as an illustration of a player that was good but not great but got in due to the popular belief that he was a lot better than the stats suggest. The type of person that would vote for Morris knows about only one war, the Spanish American, because he fought in it.
  4. Haha, you beat me. If he gets in before any of those 3, I'm not sure the HOF can sink any lower. If they let in Andre Dawson there's no reason why they wouldn't let in Jack Morris too.
  5. Non binding arbitration. It's too bad the arbitor isn't allowed to say publicly how the owners haven't given the players anything in this "negotiation"
  6. This thread has 30 pages long written all over it. With similar results
  7. Ironic that a Michigan fan would accuse another fan base of being smug. Me too and I was there maybe 20 years earlier. However, my 104 year old Grandfather is a ND Alum so they get a pass for his sake this year
  8. I don't understand why people think Melky Cabrera is good. He's only had 2 good seasons and those were followed by testing positive.
  9. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/hope-fading-deal-save-nhl-220915682--nhl.html Why do every one of these stories have to end with the reminder that last time they cancelled the season?
  10. I read somewhere that they put everything together for the first winter classic in 3 weeks so they could possibly un cancel it. I doubt any of the deal that got screwed by it being cancelled would mind if it meant that they actually got to play. I'm curious about what constitutes "progress".
  11. They might as well just cancel the season now that they've cancelled the outdoor game. This has been a rough couple days of hockey.
  12. soon they'll be talking via email and maybe if things progress well enough they can even send each other links to the funny videos they have just watched That would be a step up from the shiny piece of metal that they've been using to reflect the sun.
  13. Start talking up his ability to play SS and cash in on this.
  14. So it looks like the winter classic will be cancelled Thursday: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-winter-classic-could-canceled-thursday-170655640--nhl.html Time for the owners to make one more final offer.
  15. The thing about the Melky 1 year deal is that a lot of teams would likely take him up on it, and the ready made contender would be more attractive to him assuming that there were multiple, similar offers on the table. Another thing about Melky is that it's going to be a rough go for him as far as the fans go. If he gets off to a slow start, he's going to hear about it more so than your average player. One thing that he, or at least his agent could take into consideration is avoiding teams with fans that can be extra tough on players, the Cubs being one such. I'm not convinced that Melky Cabrera can be good without the PEDs.
  16. The big Lines are moving toward the underdogs. http://www.footballlocks.com/nfl_lines.shtml I'm intrigued by the over between the Packers and Jags (45.5). I'm thinking 42- 10 Packers is the final score.
  17. Of course he's going to say that. Leverage his way going somewhere he wants. He has a no trade clause. What leverage does he need to drum up by making misleading or false statements? To make it clear he's not simply going to accept whatever trade is put out there just to get out of town. It's leverage and face saving to say you want to stay and prove something. It's really the only thing he can say since it will be really hard to trade him and there's a strong chance he's back next season. The fans have the whole off season to forget about his awful post season.
  18. I don't get what point you are trying to make with the last two sentences. Why is announcing the Islanders will move 20 miles something they shouldn't do during the lockout? The Islanders were a dynasty a very long time ago. To put it in perspective, Joe Piscapo was still on SNL when they won their 4th straight cup. I can't see how anyone would think less of the NHL for allowing this move. The really ridiculous part is the NHL refusing to meet with the players, like they were a toddler throwing a fit because the players wouldn't take their latest final offer.
  19. Somebody might hire Guillen for something, but I'm guessing that Major League Baseball has seen the last of Bobby V. Wouldn't suprise me if one or both of their names came up next time there's an opening. MLB owners love to recycle. What went wrong for their respective teams can easily be deflected onto other people. The Red Sox had injuries and it looks like they have other issues too. It doesn't matter who you are, if you're being comapred to Loria you should come out as the better person.
  20. When I was a kid(mid 70's) I seem to remember that general admission for what was then called the Grandstand was $3. I'm guessing this ticket was from before then, maybe late 50's, early 60s. According to this, Cubs tickets in 1950 were $1.60 http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_did_a_baseball_ticket_cost_in_1950
  21. [expletive]. You're hired by the team to broadcast to their fans. The announcers SHOULD be homers. ESPN or Fox announcers should remain neutral. You should have a clear bias, but not be a raging homer. It's just a total turnoff to me to hear an announcer, even for my team, shamelessly cheerleading, or being totally morose when things aren't going well. And in the case of someone like Hawk, so biased they can't even analyze the events on the field objectively. Why would you want an analyst/announcer whose analysis/opinion you can't take seriously? I want the TV team to clearly be in the Cubs' corner, but still remain professional. I felt Len and Bob did this quite well. And in this day and age where just about every game is available nationwide through various channels (like MLB EI), viewer bases extend way beyond the home markets. I watch a ton of games, and I have to say Hawk is pretty singular in his level of homerism. Most TV announcers fall far, far short of his level of cheerleading/pouting/spazzing out, as they should. I can't think of any off the top of my head that even come close. "This is one dead-a.ss team"- Bob Brenly about a million times last season
  22. Anyone else read that as Cy Young to Athletics?
  23. Len would benefit from having someone with a little personality. Len's a decent enough straight man. He needs someone that can liven things up without being an idiot.
  24. Maybe it was the over under but I do remember he got death threats. The Thanksgiving gaffe Probably had gambling implications too.
  25. Plus this is the second- take it or leave it- offer the owners have made. When they offered 47% Bettman said the offer had an expiration date. I think the players will eventually settle at 54%. The owners could and should make that deal immediately. All they have to do to make it work is lower the cap floor, let the money teams have some sort of spend over the cap at a penalty clause and stop paying 2nd pairing defensemen $4 million per.
