  1. Here's my formula for predicting the Bears season: number of games I think they should win= 12 add 2 games they have no business winning= 14 subtract the number of times that they're on national TV at night (5)= 9 so the correct answer is 9-7 with a 1 game margin of error.
  2. Why would the Cubs be looking for short term deals for SP? The Cubs don't much starting pitching anywhere in the minors. SP will probably be a need every year for at least 5 years.
  3. Nobody can justify the statement that they don't have the opportunity to see these others players in today's modern game. Your desire for more IL doesn't resonate with me. I want the least amount of IL play necessary to be able to play one series at all times so that we can have the 15/15 set-up. Agreed. IL is necessary but not desirable. It stopped being fun somewhere around 2004.
  4. Lost in this story is the fact that, even if he had homered in that PA, Dusty still would have benched him because he was a rookie and needed to learn by never playing. I remember it more of one of those reward the minor league guy that has no real future to give hope to the other roster filler guys who do everything right but just don't have the talent type moves. That doesn't necessarily contradict anything that you said. Hendry's version of dual fronts.
  5. I understand this line of thinking, as the scars from the Joe Carter Era still run deep. However, change "in the booth" to "on the field" and you could be talking about Joe Mather. Things can always be worse. That's no reason not to look for someone better. You could have said the same thing about Valentine.
  6. Is Recker an actual catcher instead of a pretend/ emergency catcher?
  7. Yeah, I'm not a big Brenly fan either.
  8. Actually it should be: Hawks and a 3 way tie between the other 3 Chicago teams (Cubs, Bulls, Bears)
  9. I doubt he made the decision, per se. He was probably given a choice only if management felt both options were relatively equal for his future. I'd be willing to bet that this happens a lot more than you'd think. If his elbow is "healed" he missed 3 months instead of 12. If his elbow is ok he could still pitch in winter league somewhere, thus making up for lost time without taxing his arm.
  10. He said "contribute", they don't have to be amazing, just better than what was thrown out there this year. I'm pretty much a Vitters apologist so I'll point out that he's struggled with every promotion but been better the following year at that same level. 3rd base has been pretty much a train wreck all season so it's not really that much of a stretch to see the Cubs get better there whether it be Vitters, Valbuena or some combo of the two. Can Jackson do enough to contribute more than Lahair? Maybe not but at least he's a young guy that can get better. Castillo/ Clevenger ought to be able to contribute more than Soto did while he was here this season. Again, they're both young guys that could get better.
  11. Manny Trillo played in my first game too, but it was 12 years earlier. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN197505300.shtml The Cubs were actually in first place to start the day, but this loss sent them back into second place. Andre Thornton was my favorite Cub for some reason. All I really remember from the game was being excited about the Cubs being in first place and asking my father if he thought they could win the World Series. His reply was "Nope. They always find a way to screw it up.". He was right then and in every season since. Andre Thornton was traded for Larry Biittner.
  12. Like a lot of people, my first game was a blur. The oldest real memories I have are more about the fans around us than the actual game. I vividly remember these 2 guys behind me filling out the old scan tron all star ballots: This was from 1977 Guy #1: "would youze vote Mercer for all stars?" Guy #2: "I wouldn't vote him bat boy" I remember being at a game where Chuck Rainey took a no hitter into like the top of the 8th or 9th inning. edit: It was August 24th, 1983 8 2/3 broken up by Eddie Milner
  13. Maybe he'd like to be closer to his home in "mexico"
  14. He can't stick at 2B. move him to 3rd can't stick or to the OF can't stick?
  15. It seemed like there was a lot of team handball on the main channel the last few days. I'm not sure if it was by design but it seemed like most of the things I wanted to watch were on VS. aka NBC sports.
  16. That's a terrible analogy. Why would pitching Strasburg another 30-40 innings be equal to an nearly 100% chance of getting your fingers chopped off? And if anyone knows terrible analogies it's this guy. But yeah, that was awful. The blender is not turned on, so there's not a 100% chance of getting your fingers chopped off, it's merely a possibility if you're not careful. Or do you mean the Koyie Hill part, which, admittedly, is awful, perhaps even more awful than Koyie Hill's Cubs career?
  17. There's also the small point that Strasburg pitching the rest of the season through the playoffs doesn't guarantee they'll win the WS. As far as 160 innings being an "arbitrary number" that's the number they used successfully with Zimmerman. On that point, you could argue just as easily that 160 is too many given the number of innings he threw last year. Here's a better analogy than your silly Bears/ Cutler one: You drop your wedding ring in a blender, do you stop to unplug the blender before reaching your hand in to get it out? you could just reach reach and everything's fine. Or you could lean too hard on the puree button and next thing you know you're Koyie Hill.
  18. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/stephen-strasberg-nationals-innings-limit-tommy-john-surgery-scott-boras-mike-rizzo-.html Here's a bad, old school, "players should be tougher", blah blah blah article about it. With Shark's impending innings limit I thought this was worth discussing.
  19. I've always wondered how the steeplechase came about. Steeplechase makes sense. It's a competition replicating what racing through untamed nature might be (over hills, through streams, whatever). The triple jump is like the least efficient way to jump a long distance They should have a combination steeplechase and javelin except instead of throwing it for distance they have to hit a target.
  20. No, I don't agree with having Vitters up to watch Valbuena or Jackson up at all. These are the types of moves a manager asks for because he's getting tired of losing games even though that's more or less exactly what the GM wants.
  21. Jackson has always been a guy that Ks a lot
  22. If we were to trade him, I'd take a gamble and wait a year. If he can have two years like this, teams will really start to take him seriously. Especially looking at all of the middle infield prospects that we have throughout the system, none of which appear big league ready just yet, but if nothing esle, Logan Watkins could be a band-aid for a few years while we wait on one of Hernandez, Amaya, Torreyes to be ready. Maybe even Bruno. Cubs fans would eat the little bugger up like a $9 hot dog. But you decrease his value by subtracting one year of team control and you run the risk of him not hitting enough to be seen as an every day player. I'd like to see them sell high on Barney, in the right deal of course.
  23. What kind of value would Barney have in a trade to a team that needs a SS? His ~.700 OPS would play a lot better there, he's young and also cheap.
  24. This is what passes for a good pitching day, I guess.
  25. Rematch vs. Japan to make for last summer's final's loss, they will be more than ready. Japan's midfield is going to control that game, though. The key for the US will be scoring the first goal.
