  1. I strongly believe at least one will be moved for a young pitcher. I tend to believe Vitters is more likely to be moved because of the way they are planning to "mix and match" with him for the rest of the season. I don't mean to overreact to that statement by Dale, but that sounds more like making him look as good as possible in the winter as opposed to totally finding out what he's got. I agree. In addition there was the report from ABTY about teh Braves and Cubs resuming discussions about Delgado to the Cubs for Vitters and/or Jackson. If it ends up being Vitters + for Delgado, it would make a lot of sense for both imo. So the Braves want to see Jackson against everybody but they only need to see Vitters in the short side of a platoon? If the Braves really wanted Vitters for Delgado, couldn't they just scout what he does at AAA? I can't believe they'd make their decision about him based on ~100 PAs.
  2. Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson say "hi." apples and oranges. Paul Maholm is a left handed starting pitcher who has been quite effective this season while David Dejesus has been a completely unimpressive RF. LH starting pitching is going to get overvalued, pitchers pitching well are going to get a nice return midseason. Completely replacable bats like DeJesus probably aren't. How is DeJesus defensively in CF? If he can play an acceptable CF that increases his value- though not to the level of an effective starting pitcher.
  3. Isn't Blanton the exact guy that you'd want Vitters to face though? Not overpowering, usually around the plate, gets hit pretty hard at times. If they were trying to inflate his stats to raise trade value, why not just leave him in the PCL?
  4. That's not really 9 spots since guys like Mather and Camp for example are going to be replaced by guys that get signed over the winter to fill those roles. Plus there's also a good chance that the Cubs trade for some players that need to be rostered.
  5. Nothing like a no risk, no reward pickup for the playoff chase. This probably has more to do with Shark reaching his innings limit unless there's someone that really needs to see more of Casey Coleman.
  6. Man, we are relying way too much on these unproven guys to actually produce. Esp to win 90 games. To many if's. Which makes me wonder if at least some of them will get moved for more immediate help. Baez, Almora and Soler would have to be promoted pretty aggressively to even be Sept. call ups in 2015. I have a hard time believing that the plan is to be bad for 3 more seasons waiting, hoping for all of these guys to pan out. re Gooney: Maybe not understand the necessity but understand the rationale. I think if they could have gotten Cepedes , signed Fielder and won the bid for Darvish they would have been right in the thick of things. I don't believe that they are going to let the rebuilding process be a Tampa Bay like drawn out ordeal for the fans.
  7. Next year is when the whole "Dual Fronts" strategy becomes more of a reality and less a bunch of BS. Even the dumbest meatball probably understood the necessity of blowing up the current team. Now that they've done that, those same fans are going to want to see some measure of progress. The Cubs can sign a FA this year and not lose their 1st round pick. They have holes at OF and SP that won't be filled internally for at least a couple years. sign a SP extend Garza have one of Vitters or Jackson fill a hole at a position of need trade some young talent for a long term solution at the other position of need Do that and they ought to be able to at least flirt with .500
  8. Only need to clear waivers once. The way around the 40 man rule is to make them PTBNL.
  9. Agreed on the thread titles. +1 I'm pretty sure Tom Foolery was DFAed not "cut" as you suggested.
  10. So as we wait for conjecture to turn into actual news, I thought it might be fun to make a team of former Cubs that you're surprised are still hanging around MLB. The inspiration for this was Jason Marquis. Cesar Izturis also somehow still has a job. What other former Cubs are still defying all odds and hanging around?
  11. There are organizations that value winning at the minor league level- even to the point of making curious moves. The O's have been demoting pitchers to low A Delmarva to make playoff pushes. I seem to remember the Cards used to value winning down their, something about fostering a winning attitude.
  12. Of course they should. But they won't. David, where are you? The Braves wanted Maholm and Johnson was a throw in. Johnson wasn't going to get the Cubs anything by himself. That said, I'm glad it worked out.
  13. Houston did send money but I never saw how much. There were implications that it was a lot.
  14. Supposedly the Wings offered quite a bit more, but Howson would have nothing to do with trading Nash in the division. Of course this is all supposedly. Howson is crazy but the reports of who the Wings were offering were meant to be "either" instead of "and", meaning that the wings package wasn't as good as people thought. That's what she said.
  15. he set the ringtone to "who let the dogs out" Too bad that's not for someone else because you know Dempster would be calling him every few minutes just to mess with him.
  16. No doubt! They sent the players a crazy CBA proposal, with one of the key items being 5 year max contracts, and then you have these owners offering up 14 year deals. The problem is the owners need to be saved from themselves! LOL. If this isn't trying to circumvent the cap, I don't know what is!!! The league said they were gonna crack deal on contracts like this.....guess that isn't going to happen. BTW, love your login name. Biittner was actually my favorite player as a kid. LOL. That one has to go in the auto correct HOF for it's awesomeness. Even your computer thinks the owners are smoking crack.
  17. Every year that I can remember, a team overpays for a guy like Dempster. Perhaps it's wishful thinking on my part but there are good reasons why at least 3 of these teams would do just that. Dodgers: new ownership would love to make playoffs in their first season. Also, their GM is an idiot. Nationals: The have a pretty young team and don't really have to go all in this year but their fans are really starved for this success to continue and with the Orioles drawing better than they have the past 5 seasons they have to consider the benefits of establishing themselves as "the team" in the region. Tigers: have been all in from the beginning of the season when they paid big time money for Fielder. Their division is easily win-able. I thought that when they signed Fielder that their owner was old and wanted to spend what it took to make one last run just in case he's not around for the next one.
  18. T. Wood, Germano, Volstad, Lopez, Coleman. The Iowa to Chicago shuttle would be a veritable conga line since Wood is the only one that will ever make it past the 5th inning.
  19. I keep hearing that if the new CBA lowers the salary cap then all of these contracts will be scaled back like in 2005. Just because that happened then does not mean the players are going to agree to that this time around. I think the owners are not is nearly as strong of a position as they were in 2004. There is no way they can afford any kind of an extended shut down. Don Fehr is a master at exploiting this. And as you stated, the owners are going to look bad crying poor and giving contracts like this....or 3.5 mill a yr to players like Oduya and Kyle Quincey. A lot of the money- maybe $68 million- is supposed to be signing bonuses over the first few years starting with $13 mil in season 1. That money can't be scaled back, at least that's the speculation based on existing rules.
  20. His career ops is .666- or at least was earlier today.
  21. honest question: was Rodrigo Lopez ever any good? This is not meant to imply that taking a flier on Sanchez is in any way a good idea. Merely curious.
  22. Would you even need to include Dempster? Cubs owe Soriano $46 million Sox owe Crawford $142 million Cubs get: Crawford + $60 million Red Sox get: Soriano This deal saves the Red Sox $36 million in the long run and opens up a roster spot if/ when they decide to get rid of Soriano. It also gives them immediate help in LF where Soriano's bad legs don't have to cover much ground. Cubs get out of Soriano's contract, have the luxury of moving Crawford's surgery to next week if they feel like it and will pay Crawford $82 million over the rest of his contract. Is Crawford worth $13.5 mil per over the next 6 seasons?
  23. You've already taken more fliers than the Battle of Britain The beauty of fliers is that you can take out all you want. If you don't like what you see, toss it in in the trash before the end of the block. Best case scenrio, you get a great reclamation player. Worst case scenario, you have some toilet reading. Hendry took out a flier on Ryan Dempster, and the result was the longest tenured Cub of his era. Then he continued to take out fliers on the likes of Scott Willamson, Chad Fox, Wade Miller, and Chad Fox again. Can't forget that flier he pulled in May of 2008. The point is, I'd rather stock all of Iowa with once high profile fliers that have an off chance to be valuable, though has a greater chance of being junk than junk that we know will end up junk. So yes, give me Scott Kazmir, Brandon Wood, and Brandon Webb over Rodrigo Lopez, Matt Tolbert, and Alfredo Amezaga any day. IIRC, Dempster was coming off an injury and teams weren't sure if he was worth signing as a reliever. Not really the same as signing every recognizable name that comes along on the 1/20 chance that they might be good.
  24. Flyers offer Weber 14 year, 100 million + contract! http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/shea-weber-inks-14-offer-sheet-philadelphia-flyers-052925384--nhl.html Sort of undermines the "cry poverty" stance of the owners.
