  1. Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick will lead them to the ring I at least hope they win 82 games this year. Of all pro sports franchises, the Pirates fans (both of them) deserve a winning season and some hope. Completely disagree. They've sucked for 20 years. Big deal. Pirates fans are Steelers and Penguins fans, and their teams have won multiple titles since that time. So by your logic, Cubs fans can't complain about the lack of a championship in our lifetimes because most Cubs fans are Bulls and Blackhawks fans, and those teams have won championships in recent memory? That makes no sense. Not all Cub fans are Blackhawks or Bulls fans. I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone from Pittsburgh that isn't a Steelers / Penguins fan.
  2. Other than the Phillies, it seems like teams aren't willing to overpay as much as they used to at the deadline. So it might very well be possible to get a better deal for someone like Marmol in the offseason.
  3. as long as his replacement isn't John Scott, it will be ok. In fact, it forces them to take a longer look at their other options at C for the 2nd line. Fans of Kruger and perhaps Smith could see that silver lining.
  4. and people say he was a first round bust. HA
  5. I think we can all agree that only white players are ever called gritty but Cubs fans have hated them some white players too. Or have we already forgotten about Aaron Miles? I can't think of his name but he was a switch hitting 2nd/ 3rd baseman that struck out a lot and went on to do well a couple seasons with the Red Sox. He had one of the better obp % on the team but Dusty refused to have him lead off. Also, anyone from the Cubs.com days should remember the vitriol that was (rightfully) thrown at Todd Hundley. Compared to Hundley, Milton Bradley's Cubs career was a love fest.
  6. Because the only thing better than Z for one year at 18 million is Burnett for two years at 18 million. Which is why I said Burnett+cash. Don't the Cubs owe Pena differed money for next year? If the Yankees paid that it would be like getting Burnett for about 12 mil next year which might not be too bad if he returned to career norms.
  7. Has Zambrano cleared waivers? I would assume he has but then you never know. edit mlbtrade rumors says so in OP #-o Has Burnett cleared waivers? Would the Yankees like Reed Johnson thrown in?
  8. It's been a long time since Harris was good, that should help.
  9. You know who else was the best player the Cubs had but wasn't much of a leader and was unwilling to do things like bat in a different part of the order? Ryne Sandberg. That guy never made his teammates better andhe insisted on always batting 2nd. You know who else didn't care? Ernie Banks. He refused to play SS where he was good and insisted on playing 1st base. Anybody can play 1st base. Talk about lazy. You who really hustled? Doug Dascenzo? Boy was he scrappy!
  10. The difference being that outside of Johnson, which vets are blocking anybody? I don't need to see any more of Campana to know that he's not anything more than he's been. I suppose it would be good to see what some of the 2nd base options are but that won't really happen until Sept. anyway. This situation is different than not playing Choi because Fred McGriff is chasing some meaningless milestone.
  11. Ozzie was a much better defender. He (Smith) did that at a time when all that anyone really expected from their SS was defense. Visquel would have been a superstar if he had played during the late 70s early 80s. Instead his offensive numbers get compared to guys like Ripken, ARod and Jeter.
  12. It doesn't seem like anyone wants to give Pujols the 30m/ 10 year deal he's looking for, especially considering how the usual suspects don't "need" him since they are already paying big contracts to good players at his position. Pujols would probably make sense for a team like the Orioles who could probably pay him what he wants but would Pujols take less money to stay with the Cards? If the money is pretty close, he just might.
  13. http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Looking-ahead-to-2011-12-Ranking-the-NHL-8217-;_ylt=AqScYOnTY86s0Lu45Q0JOqN7vLYF?urn=nhl-wp9636 Puck Daddy ranked the top 25 in the league. Captain serious #3- no real surprise there. Dave Bolland at #24 ahead of guys like Joe Pavelski and Krecji! This got me thinking about a 2nd line with Bolland between Sharp and Hossa. I know a lot of people like Bolland on the 3rd line it would be fun to see what Bolland could do with some actual finishers on his line. The real question: is Kruger as good as the Hawks seem to think he is and would a line of Kruger with Bickell and Frolik be able to hold up.
  14. Talk about a guy who didn't live up to the hype. When he was a rookie that guy was supposed to be the 2nd coming. Did people still think he could play SS at that point?
  15. Regarding the old WRs TO and Moss are done. They aren't who they used to be and not worth the drama they undoubtedly would eventually bring. Buress is interesting. Though he is old he's had 2 years off with his body not getting the abuse that comes from playing in the NFL. He certainly has something to prove on the field. Off the field you'd think he'd have more sense now. Signing 85 reminds me a lot of when the Bears signed Golden Richards or the Cubs signing Jason Kendall 3 years after they stopped being good.
  16. What's the deal with Marwin Gonzalez? I see that he's a switch hitter but it looks like he's much better from the right side. How's his defense?
  17. It's tough to compare position by position because a lot of the roles are undefined. For example, if Brunette is replacing Brouwer that is a short term upgrade. But can you really say that they got Brunette to replace Brouwer's role? Campbell to Leddy is a downgrade but Montador is an upgrade over Hendry plus there's no Nick Boyton impersonating a defenseman. Carcillo is a big upgrade over Scott who should be a bad memory by the time the season starts. The 4th line should be a lot better.
  18. Because it's Ian Darke and he's English and those are the words he uses? I was talking about the American color- or perhaps they prefer colour -commentators. Julie Fouty called that heel "Cheeky". FTH
  19. Do other countries use the ESPN feed for these games? I'm just wondering why American announcers are saying things like "Cheeky" and using the word "pace" to an American audience. Also, Japan has a player named Ono and it took me a while to realize that the PBP guy kept saying Ono instead of oh no.
  20. When you have a coach that likes to mix up the lines a lot, this kind of team makes a little more sense. The 4th line should be better with energy guys (Smith, Kruger) and trouble makers (Mayers, Carcillo) and should be able to chip in some goals which was one of the biggest differences between last year and the year before.
  21. Why are you being a dick I wasn't bashing you for anything. I clearly dont have the soccer experience or knowledge that you have. Do you make fun of a toddler for not knowing how to speak? It's not like I came in here saying I was all knowing and watched FIFA all the time, I don't, which is quite obvious. Are you a woman? The standard test to find out is to ask him to explain the offside rule. Do you tell them who FIFA wants to win the game first? Otherwise it's really hard to know how that will be called. Or do you mean the actual rule?
  22. Stalberg is the Shawon Dunston of Hockey- has skills and sometimes shows them but is never as good as he should be. I was a sucker for Dunston, so I'm pulling for Stalberg. With Stalberg in the fold, hopefully that's another foot out the door for Scott.
  23. The other benefit of these moves is that it should make Scott expendable. He was always a liability and the necessity of carrying a DG is debatable at best. Carcillo might not be as intimidating but he can actually play hockey. What I find a little unsettling is that it seems like Bowman is pandering to the mouth breathers. On the other hand, I like the defensive pairings provided Campoli signs. What will be interesting to see is whether young guys like Morin and Beech will get a chance this year.
  24. My Grandfather was at that game
