  1. are you suggesting that 17 walks in 25 innings is not that good? He's sucked out of the pen, but his two outings as a starter have been halfway decent so far. I know, small sample size and all that, but it seems like the only success he's had in his career has been in a starting role. Which makes sense. A starter has at least a decent chance of not letting the walks kill him but they are death to relievers unless they have marmolesque stuff. Dempster is a good example of a high walk, not always effective reliever turned into a good SP. It might also be that Smardj doesn't try to amp up his fastball as a starter and as a result has better control.
  2. seriously, they need to send 3 players off for 5 minutes instead of granting free kicks. I'm assuming you mean in the next round when the games can't end in a tie. Penalty shots are a terrible way to end any game. They do that in field hockey- removing 4 per side for OT before going to penalty strokes. I would think that purists would like that better than penalty kicks. You'd have to allow more substitutions if you did that since the size of the field would make it just as much a test of endurance as one of skill.
  3. Sandberg's love affair with the sac bunt in the minor leagues may have more to do with instruction than an indication of his philosophy. However, his tendancy toward using the hit and run shows that he is the type of manager that tries to make things happen. As a general rule I hate those types of managers.
  4. I'd move Fontenot ahead of Lee but otherwise I like that lineup, at least until Lee starts hitting.
  5. my heartfelt condolences. but really it was a fun series and i'm proud that my team played as well as they did. if we had a real goaltender the outcome might've been different, which is about as much as i could have expected. I think that it was more a matter of spotting Boston 3 games to start that series that really was the Flyers undoing (from their perspective that is). They had nothing left by the end of the 2nd period and played the 3rd period on guts alone. In the end they had too many desparation games to be able to skate with the younger, deeper Hawks team. I give the Flyers a lot of credit. They were a much better team than most people-including me- gave them credit for going into the series. Lieno was an absolute beast in the series.
  6. He reminds me more of Todd Hundley- can't catch up to a fastball, can't see a slider but will hit the occasional mistake for a HR.
  7. In all seriousness, I wonder of Jeff Samardzjia for Alex Gordon is a possibility. Much like Gordon, Shark is a former top prospect whose team has pretty much given up on him, and maybe a change of scenery would do him good. Of course, Shark would have to waive the NTC that he never should have had to begin with, but I suppose he would considering hes much more likely to get a shot with KC than with us. Maybe throw in one of our AAAA guys like Fuld, Hoffpauir, or Snyder. Maybe Theriot if it gets the job done. Samardzjia was supposedly willing to waive his NTC to go to the O's in the infamous Brian Roberts deal so I don't see why he wouldn't do the same for KC. Right now he's probably behind Jackson, Schlitter and Parker in terms of possibly being promoted. You could also probably add Coleman to that list and there's always Gray and Berg.
  8. Nady to the Angels makes a lot more sense considering there are a lot fewer obstacles to the deal. What would the Angels be willing to give up for Nady? Do they have a hard throwing low A pitcher with shoulder problems that Hendry is targeting?
  9. I'm not so sure that's true. He's pitching well now. No team is going to build around Silva as an anchor to their rotation but a team in the hunt would definitely want him to fill out the back end of their rotation. Keep in mind also that a lot of GMs are old fashioned enough to like that 7-0 W-L record. Sadly, Jim Hendry is probably one of those dumb GMs and will deem him untouchable.
  10. If that means sending Cashner back to the AAA rotation I'm ok with that.
  11. I think fans get frustrated with players that run hot and cold because they want the hot streaks all the time.
  12. No, for 3 main reasons. First, it would be a sign that they are giving up on the season. Hendry won't do that for fear of losing his job. Second, Lee has no trade rights and hasn't been willing to waive them before, why would he wave them now to go to a team that is in 3rd place. Finally, Who would play first the rest of the season for the Cubs? I guess Nady would be the most likely but he hasn't really set the world on fire either. I think they'd also want a sure handed 1st baseman at least for this year to save Castro a bunch of throwing errors. Which is not to suggest that Castro can't throw just that it would be better for him to have Lee at first.
  13. I'm fine with trading Gorz, but the 8th inning stuff is getting to be parody. Exactly. Marshall has the 8th inning covered. It's the 6th and 7th innings where the Cubs need help. Except that it would be nice to not have to send Marshall out there for 80 appearances this year. They want what they've wanted ever since they made Marmol the closer, a hard throwing RH reliever that can strike people out. They already have Blake Parker and Brian Schlitter in AAA who fit that description but for some reason they don't have enough confidence in them to do the same job at the MLB level. Trading Gorzelanny probably means either re signing Lilly or moving Marshall to the rotation next year as they will likely want at least 1 LH SP. Since they like Marshall in the pen that means keeping Lilly.
  14. So you're OK with increasing his workload from about 95 innings to 150? That seems like a pretty big jump.
  15. That sums it up pretty well.
  16. Who does Lowell play for these days? I don't see them giving up anyone above Low A for Lowell.
  17. With Baker down, don't the Cubs pretty much have to put Ramirez on the DL now and bring up Tracy?
  18. I haven't given up trying to figure out what Hendry is thinking. Maybe the point of these moves is to limit Jackson and Cashner's innings now as opposed to later in the season. If neither of them get called up before September they will still have plenty of time to get in the necessary workload. Perhaps this is a rare moment of forsight on the part of the Cubs so that these guys can be part of a September push- if the Cubs are still in the race by then. Parker and Schlitter both had control issues at the start of the season. Both seem to be doing better at not walking a batter per inning. I still think either or both can/ will get a shot soon. I readily acknowledge that there's a good chance that I'm giving Hendry way too much credit here.
  19. What about Schlitter? From what I remember he throws hard and his control seems to be imporving of late.
  20. An outdoor game in NJ is better than an indoor game in Detroit.
  21. The scenario that I dread is he struggles in that role, starts to press and the coaching staff tries to "fix" him. For what seems like the 5th time, it's probably not a real big deal.
  22. You don't think there's more pressure on a leadoff hitter than a guy batting 7th or 8th? It may be too much pressure if it causes him to start trying to do too much or to start pressing. There's also a chance he'll handle that pressure. He doesn't seem to lack confidence or be intimidated by new situations.
  23. What's wrong with Castro leading off against lefties? In his limited time up he's posting significantly better OBP against LH pitchers. LH starters: .316 .480 .474 .954 (6 games) RH starters: .366 .366 .512 .878 (10 games) It may be asking too much of a first year player. However, since it's the lesser half of the platoon (so to speak) I guess it would be ok.
  24. Considering that Baker has a career .896 OPS against lefties, yes. Yeah, Fontenot/Baker is definitely a preferable alternative. The only problem becomes who leads off against LH starters? Given the available options, I see them going with Castro and I'm not sure if I like that. As a pre emptive strike, I don't really care about things like "Lead off hitter" but the Cubs and Piniella do. Which is why I can't see them trading Theriot even though it would be a good idea -providing they could get value for him.
  25. Milford is where the Bluth's went to school and were never seen or heard. He called the Marleau line the Bluth brothers.
