  1. So what are they going to do when the series is split 3-3 like it has been most years? What I dislike most about this idea is that it may be seen as a reason to keep interleague play which has outlived whatever usefulness it once had.
  2. I'd like to see the play in games be for a #9 seed since the #8 is the lowest rated home seed. That gives the play in teams a chance to actually make the final 4 if they can beat the #1 seed in the second round. This also helps the #1 seeds in that they will know who they are playing in the 1st round sooner and will give them extra time to prepare for that team.
  3. There's also a good chance that they are taking a new approach to trying to get him out. They're probably throwing him more breaking balls and challenging him less with fastballs. A spike in walks for the next week or so would be a good sign.
  4. Based on what he's done in the minors, the fact that he's drawn 5 walks but is still hitting for power is a really good sign. It's a really small sample but if he somehow managed to keep his OBP about 75 points higher than his BA he could be reasonably counted on as an .800-.850 ops guy which is a great value considering his salary. Let's see where he is after 100 PAs.
  5. Any of you that are criticizing Santo for not knowing what inning it was or where they were or whatever should listen to 1 inning of other teams announcers. Last night I watched the game from the DC feed and had to listen to Rob Dibble. Santo often has no idea what's going on but I'd prefer that to an idiot who thinks he knows something and insists on repeatedly saying stupid things.
  6. I'm not really sure what you mean. Are you saying that the difference between Chad Tracy and Derrek Lee is the same as the difference between say Dempster (a bad hitter) and Zambrano? I don't believe comparing position players to pitchers is that much much of an apples to apples comparison. A position player is going to get more PAs and are expected to do something with those chances. A pitcher typically has to pitch into the 7th inning in order to get 3 ABs. If they hit .250 (pretty good for a pitcher) that's 1 hit every other start.
  7. I can't decide which "Fred is old" joke to go with here. Back to the topic, I remember Meth defending Jason Marquis along the same lines: that his above average bat made up for his meh pitching ability. I just don't see how 2-3 abs balances out 6-7 innings of pitching.
  8. They should go the bet route instead. If the Cubs lose, fans have to be called yuppies and buy $6 beers. If the Sox lose, fans will have to get tattoos and go shirtless to games.
  9. I skipped the middle 8 pages of this thread, Even the clowns on MLB network think this is a crazy bad idea. The only way that this move makes any sense at all is that they are going to piggy back Zambrano for the last 4 innings of Lilly's starts until he gets stretched out. It's crazy, and they could more effectively do the same thing with Gorzelanny but at least there's "some" shread of logic to that plan.
  10. What about Mo Vaughn? In his case he wasn't physically able to play but the net effect was the same, they were paying him but getting no production.
  11. Same thing happened to my brother after he bought tickets to the Nats- Cubs game last year. Those tickets were $50 each so I guess that would make him look like a big spender.
  12. I wouldn't say the Cubs releasing Soriano is likely but it's not out of the question. If they thought they could replace him with a colvin/ Nady platoon then it doesn't cost them anything extra to have Soriano sit at home watching TV. That assumes that Colvin lives up to his ST results, Nady doesn't get a lot more money next year and Byrd and Fukudome are productive. All those things could happen. There's also the possibility that Vitters makes a meteoric rise and the Cubs stick him in LF next year. But Soriano around for at least 2 more seasons is a lot more likely.
  13. Dye and Sheffield are terrible examples as far as racism goes. However, when was the last time you saw a non white player described as "gritty", "blue collar" or "playing the game the right way"? How much is Jim Thome getting this year? I would think that he is pretty close to the white version of Jermaine Dye. Thome with incentives could make about $2.5 million. Dye has already been offered that.
  14. The guy doesn't even know how to spell his own last name. THERE'S NO "HE" IN MCGEE, DUMMY.
  15. don't the Jays already have a DH that is good and that they just extended for 6 years? Would Soriano agree to a trade to a team that wanted him to DH? I don't know the answer to that question but there are players that don't like DHing.
  16. The idea that Hendry signed him to bat 5th and Soriano insisted on leading off runs contrary to everything I've ever seen or read about the signing.
  17. Are MLB Jerseys made in the USA? I can't really find fault with some 12 year old Vietnamese kid in a sweatshop for not noticing the letters of a city he's never been too were out of order. The clubhouse guy should have noticed that the name was misspelled. The player should also have noticed. One of his teammates should have noticed. Needless to say, CT deserves at least some of the blame for this outrage. Clearly there are many people to blame. Therefore the only fair solution to this crisis is to void Alphonso Soriano's contract and ban Albert Pujols from MLB indefinitely.
  18. I'm more excited for my Daughter's softball season. I'm trying to decide whether she should bat 3rd or 4th. My son was never really into baseball so I never had that problem with him. My daughter is LH and has been killing the ball in practice. As for the Cubs, I'm excited about the young pitchers in the pen. I may be the only person who believes it but I think once Gray comes up for Smardz or Berg and Russell moves down for Lilly (With Gorz or Silva to the pen) the Pen will be a real plus with lots of options. No one in the central impresses me much including the Cards so the Cubs should be able to make it interesting if they can score enough runs. Moving forward it seems like the new GM next year won't have to waste money on the pen and can instead find upgrades to the rotation and whatever holes need to be filled.
  19. It sounds like the Yankees are looking for a 5th OF. If they were looking for a starter obviously Fuld would not be in the discussion. However, if you think of it in terms of Thames vs Fuld, Fuld makes more sense defensively and, if he's not hitting, Thames is pretty much useless. Fuld wouldn't cost anything so its not completely absurd especially considering that the Yankees lineup could probably carry an all defense OF if Swisher or Granderson got hurt.
  20. for as long as I can remember there has been a saying in baseball: if you can hit they'll find a place for you to play. Guys that can hit but are bad at defense have been around forever. This isn't some new trend. Every player wants to be a complete player. Jake Fox, for example, reportedly has worked really hard on his defense. Unfortunately for him he still sucks at it. But that's not for lack of effort. The idea that young players don't care about defense is laughable. If Fox could play even a decent catcher he'd likely be an all star. At the very least he could have made the major leagues much sooner and therefore made more money.
  21. Apparently it's not about overall revenue. A football playoff would almost certainly have a greater interest, not to mention additional games, that would generate more money for television networks and NCAA as a whole. The issue that I have heard is about how the money is divided. Under the current format, each school and each school's conference stands to make a certain percentage depending on their particular bowl. If a playoff were to be created, it is believed that the schools and the school's conference would make considerably less because it would be spread out in a more even manner throughout NCAA. I guess kind of like the same assumption that Notre Dame doesn't join a conference because they already have the attention and benefits without having to share their profits with a dozen other schools. This is exactly the case. That's why a playoff can only happen if the BCS conferences formed their own division. I'd imagine the NCAA fought fight against that for the sake of the mid majors.
  22. Wouldn't it make a lot more sense for both teams if the Cubs traded Colvin to the Nats instead of Fukudome? The Nats are young and rebuilding. Colvin fits in with their long term plans a lot more than Fukudome. The Nats already have the sage veteran leadership with Dunn and Pudge. I wouldn't mind selling high on Colvin.
  23. That's not very likely. So if a team has a bad year financially this year, they are likely to spend a lot of money in the offseason? That's not what you said. It isn't? What exactly did I say?
  24. That's not very likely. So if a team has a bad year financially this year, they are likely to spend a lot of money in the offseason?
  25. Teams don't seem as willing as they once were to "mortgage the farm" for rental players like Lee. But we're talking 7 months from now, and the economy is likely past the worst stage, and teams have been very cautious for two years now. It's quite likely things will be looking up by this November, and teams that have been sitting and waiting will want to make a splash. Aramis is a very productive player, and if he bounces back this season, his resume would be terrific for a free agency. If he returns to 2007/2008 form, you think it would be hard for him to get $16m this offseason? In this economy? It's possible he does, but I don't think it's a lock like it would have been a few years ago. The economy will have had to recover toward the beginning of this season to affect next offseason. Teams are more likely to base what they can spend on what they made this year rather than what they might hope to make next year. The economy can just as easily regress over the summer too.
