I fear any hint of quickness we may have seen from Matt in his rookie year is lost and gone forever. Or he was playing hurt most of the year and he will be better moving forward. We can always hope.

I will always think of Jody Davis when I see a #7 on the Cubs. Jody, Jody DavisCatcher without a Beer Fixed. Retiring numbers in baseball is dumb. In football the players are wearing helmets and you can't see their faces. Thus the numbers are a big part of identifying them on the field. I'm ok with someone like Walter Payton having his number retired but not people like Jimbo Covert. Does anyone really make the connection between a baseball player and the number he wears/ wore? When I think of Andre Dawson I remember his batting stance and intimidating stare. It never once occured to me that he shouldn't wear Santo's #10. -

That's fine if you disagree, just realize you are wrong. It depends on what you consider winning consistently. If making the playoffs is winning consistently then yes it can work. If you mean winning / making it to the superbowl than no it can't consistently win. A defense first team relies heavily on winning the turnover and field position battles. I would also argue that they can be just as dependent on a single outstanding player as a good offense is on it's starting QB. Some examples: The Steelers are borderline terrible without Paulomauolo. The Colts were bad without Bob Sanders- until this year. The superbowl Bears didn't dominate anybody after Tommie Harris got hurt. Would you say last year's Bears team missed Urlacher?

I'd rather not see that #1 offense vs. #1 defense matchup, because I have seen it before. I'd rather see offense on offense this time around, and it looks like a real possibility. Out of the possibilities, I consider the Jets making it to the Super Bowl to be far and away the worst case scenario. As a Bears fan, I don't want to see the Jets make it to the Superbowl since it would just reinforce the archaic "defense and run the football" mentality that the Bears have used since the dawn of time.

I wonder if Warner vs Rothliesberger (sp) will ever make it into this discussion? In terms of the game actually being good, Ken Anderson (Cincy) vs Montana would be one of the best QB match ups.

None of the possible match ups are bad. Jets vs Saints would be the #1 offense vs the #1 defense. Manning vs. Favre, Manning vs. Brees are compelling matchups. As someone already said, Favre vs his former team will be a tedious storyline. Hopefully having the pro bowl during the off week will defuse that a little bit.

It would be fantastic if the Jets, who wouldn't even have made the playoffs if the Colts hadn't let them win, beat the Carlos Silva out of the Colts. I was way off in my prediction. I had Dallas - Minnesota ending in a scoreless tie which then gets settled by Tony Romo and Brett Favre fighting to the death armed only with pieces of Jared Allen and Aaron Rogers. I'd like to see the Saints win. On the other hand, if the Vikings win the superbowl Farve retires forever.

LOL, they're going to run this whole thing by committe. Who needs a coordinator? You've seen the player huddle on the sidelines. Now the Bears are going to invent the assistant huddle to vote on plays & defenses. Supah Bowl. College of Coaches anyone? That sure worked out well for the Cubs. I don't understand what the Bears are doing either, Lovie wants to run, run, run the ball. If that's the case why trade for Cutler and has Lovie been watching the playoffs at all? Yes, he watched it work for the Jets so every other team winning by passing the ball must be a fluke.

How is it possible that the Cubs organization can't produce a back up, RH corner OF. That's got to be the most dime a dozen of all baseball commodities.

The only pro coach that went to coach in college that I can think of is Wannstedt. I can't think of a NFL coach that quit to go to a college program. Nick Saban doesn't count since he was a college coach that went back.

I think I'd rather bring back Johnson for 1.5-2 million and have him Platoon with Fukudome. They'll be enough RH power in the lineup against LH starters so a high obp guy that can play defense would be more of a priority. Johnson Baker/ Byrd Lee Ramirez Soriano Soto Byrd/ Baker Theriot P Would not be bad against LH starters.

I could see the Orioles giving Sheets what he's asking for. Sometimes it seems like they are trying to spend confederate money when it comes to FAs. They could overpay and they could use a vet like Sheets to compliment their young rotation. -

I'm not sure if Gray is a lock but you'd have to assume that Silva is. That means that there is only spot 1 if they decide to keep Parisi. I think there's a good chance they will. They wouldn't need to hide Parisi the way they did with Patton. If they don't sign another SP from outside the org, some combo of Wells, Gorzellany and Smardj will be competing for the 4-5 spots in the rotation. If Smardj doesn't make the rotation he *should* be sent to Iowa's rotation. That leaves Cardidad competing with Stevens, Gaub, Parker, Gray, Berg, Atkins and whatever NRIs they might bring in. Unless they can find somewhere to unload Silva, it's going to be difficult for Cardidad to make the team.

I was thinking about this the other day. What if the Cubs traded Fukudome to the Yankees for Swisher, then used the moeny they saved to sign Hudson. They use their remaining money to sign Bedard and if/when Castro is ready they trade Theriot whatever need they have at that point. So the lineup is: Hudson Byrd Lee Ramirez Swisher Soriano Soto Theriot/ Castro That has a little more R/L balance for the people who like that sort of thing. It gives up some defense in RF but gains some at 2nd base. It also saves money in the long run.
