  1. We'll still need a CF. Sign Cameron. That makes the lineup Fukudome Castillo Lee Ramirez Cameron Soriano Soto Theriot
  2. I looked at his LD% and his BABIP and didn't particularly like what I saw. His 4-1 K-BB ratio is a little conerning too. I agree he would have been worth a shot but how long are you willing to stick with Hermida if he doesn't break out? I think (hope) Hendry has his sights set a little higher. Though I'm prepared to be disappointed by Hendry's idea of a better corner OF.
  3. If he accepts arbitration he could get paid more than $4 million on a one year deal. This should be good news if it means that Hendry can get him closer to 2.5-3 million. Still not worth it probably but that's the going rate for experienced set up men. I think we'll see a lot of teams not offer arby this year for fear that players will accept since multi year deals will be hard to come by for non elite players.
  4. Since when are the Cubs looking for RH hitters?
  5. You dismiss the age difference way too quickly. He's 4 years younger. Hoff has already seen his prime, Hermida is just entering it. When Micah was Hermida's age, he was going through his first abysmal season of AAA. It's a pretty big difference. Fair enough. So replace Hoffpauir with Snyder. The point is that unless he has a breakout year, Hermida is not that much better than other in house insurance policies. I think you'd agree that the Cubs need more than insurance, they need a starter they can count on.
  6. Hermida looked a lot better going into this season then he does now. I would not have minded taking a low risk flier on Hermida but is he really that much better of an insurance policy then Hoffpauir? Hermida is younger, and has a bigger upside but he has yet to show that he's that much better. At least he wasn't the last 2 seasons.
  7. or those are 2 different groups of posters or nobody said he'd be an idiot for getting hermida at all Plenty of people have been saying that Hermida is not that good. He's a decent insurance policy but he shouldn't be counted on as a savior.
  8. Why would anyone give Damon a 3 year deal?
  9. I could see Dolis but Camp strikes me more as a role player/ bench guy. Those guys are valuable but is it really worth it for a team to try to hide him on the 25 man for a season?
  10. He's the left handed Asian slightly better version of Ryan Theriot. Past his prime, peaked at 28. Unsuccesful base stealer. When I first read this I thought it sounded like a haiku he's the left handed asian slightly better than Ryan Theriot
  11. It's true that Hermida would be a low cost opportunity. The concern is that, looking at his MLB stats, he has been consistently mediocre with the exception of 2007 where he had about a 35 point spike in babip. Either he got lucky that one year or he's been relatively unlucky the last 2 seasons. If the Cubs can make a substantial upgrade at 2nd base I think they could probably take a chance on Hermida and be ok. If they aren't paying him a lot of money he'd be easy to replace later on.
  12. Huh, it just happened. From today's game notes: I guess Welington's hurt. Maybe they've seen enough and don't want to show other teams any more. If he kept playing well in the AFL the Cubs would have to roster him. This way there's still some doubt.
  13. Where did the Cubs get Luis Rivas from?
  14. That doesn't sound like being a malcontent so much as a competitor who sees that he has outlived his usefullness with his current team. It would be a lot more selfish and malcontenty to just sit back and be the highest paid 5th OF in baseball history.
  15. GM Jr could probably go to St. Louis and return to the form that got him the big contract. What's particularly troubling about GM Jr is that he is the kind of good citizen that Hendry likes. But I believe Hendry passes on him because of the HGH implications.
  16. Is Robinson playing winter ball somewhere?
  17. There's no test for HGH. There are also designer steroids that the existing tests can't find. That was the whole point of BALCO. Also baseball players are widely regarded as the dumbest group of professional athletes.
  18. ANYBODY?? The real question is how many people are thinking "I've had worse"?
  19. There are a couple of reasons why this is not commonly done. In the first place, teams don't take steps to keep offensive linemen from wearing down because they typically don't wear down. A defensive lineman has to exert much more effort than an offensive lineman on a normal play. A defensive lineman is supposed to pursue to the ball until the whistle is blown while an offensive lineman frequently gives up mid play because they're too slow to catch up with the play after it is past them. Also a defensive lineman has to have superior speed/strength to get past an offensive lineman, while an offensive lineman just has to have the same speed/strength as the defense in order to hold them up. Finally, continuity on the offensive line is more important sometimes because they are potentially protecting an entire season for the team (the health of the QB and RB) while the worst a defensive line being out can do is to give up a TD. So offensive linemen don't get tired as the game wears on, they just suck? I understand the theory that the offense knows where the play is going and doesn't have to cover as much ground. Knowing that its a pass play coming doesn't mean it takes less effort to pass block.
  20. That's some really hard hitting analysis.
  21. This may be a dumb question but here goes. A lot of teams these days rotate their D-linemen so that they can go all out for the time that they're in the game without worrying about wearing down as the game goes on. Makes sense. So why don't teams do the same thing with offensive linemen? Sunday night Pace played pretty well in the first half but clearly wore down as the game went on. Why not platoon Pace with what's his name? Wouldn't that help keep them from wearing down?
  22. Ryan Braun is a good (realistic) "best case" scenario for Vitters. Hits for a high average with very good power. What little patience he has comes from his power and pitchers fearing him, not from good strike zone judgement or willingness to work deep counts. Poor defender at 3B, will have to move to LF or 1B. Wouldn't a best case scenario for Vitters involve him becoming an above average defender at 3B? Yes, but I don't consider that realistic. If I had to pick I'd say Vitters has a better chance of being an average defender than hitting for Braun-like power.
  23. That first powerplay was a thing of beauty- except for not scoring a goal.
  24. fixed. Sorry, that's a running joke in my classroom every time we talk about a war e.g. stopping Hapsburg aggression (30 years war) unifying Germany (Franco- Prussian) and so forth
