  1. I think slim just left town.
  2. This really messes up our sound of music tribute song lyrics.
  3. Isn't Old Style already signed through next season? Seemingly they intend to keep him around as the vet RH or they would have traded him to the Giants. So if they give Grabow 3 million per that means that the pen will look like this: Marmol- closer Guzman- 8th Grabow- 7th Marshall/ Gorzelany 2nd LH pitcher Heilman- 6th inning leaving the last 2 spots to be decided among Patton, Stevens, Gaub, Parker, Caridad, Simardzila and perhaps Wells/ Gorzelany/ Marshall depending on what they do with the rotation. That pen is pretty cost effective and they can probably afford the luxury of overpaying Grabow. It would be even better if they could find a taker for Mr. Krausening.
  4. My thinking is that Sheets will be gone by then. Also, the Cubs should make room for Sheets if he's healthy and not too expensive. Sheets is arguably a better pitcher than anything the Cubs currently have. In addition, Sheets gives the Cubs depth when one of the pitchers (including Sheets) goes on the DL. Sheets is insurance if Harden walks. Z Sheets Lilly Harden (if he walks, Wells or whomever) Dempster They'd probably have to either let Harden walk or trade Bradley/Fukudome/Lilly/Dempster to "make room" for Sheets. I guess if it's an either/or Sheets/Harden, I'd take Harden. I wouldn't want to trade Bradley or Fukudome and Lilly and Dempster puts them back to square one. It will be interesting to see what happens to the payroll. That would depend on what they got for Lilly, etc. They won't give up any of those guys as a salary dump except maybe Bradley.
  5. Tuetopolis, IL Wooden Shoes I always thought was weird. The Johnstown Johnnies actually has a nice ring to it.
  6. It's funny, people always talk a lot about Urlacher but it doesn't seem like he's made any big plays for the last season and a half. That could be because the other side concentrates on taking him out of plays and that frees things up for other people. I guess we'll see. I won't miss the Urlacher blitz up the middle, find the fullback and then make sure he blocks you rather than trying to get to the QB play that I've seen so much the last couple years.
  7. He very well may have made the right decision. My biggest problem with the Bradley signing is that Pniella wanted a LH hitter that could bat between Lee and Ramirez. Bradley seemed like an odd fit there. I realize that a lot of people don't believe that batting order matter much but Bradley always struck me as a guy that was more suited to batting near the top of the order rather than the middle. It's possible that his struggles early in the season were partly a result of being too pull conscious because a clean up hitter is supposed to hit for more power.
  8. Reyes at SS and Theriot at 2nd or Theriot to somewhere else?
  9. The difficulty this year is that the new owner hasn't really said much about what they intend to do. He *might* want to make a big splash in what should be a buyers market. He may want to decrease payroll as many of the recent high dollar signees haven't really panned out. I don't see Hendry paying a FA closer. The focus will probably be on upgrading 2nd base which probably means Figgins or Hudson (did he sign a 1 year deal with the Dodgers?) Now that they've moved Soriano out of the leadoff spot they will be looking for someone with some speed.
  10. They could not have traded Lee after last season. They explored the option and basically dropped it when Lee made it clear he would exercise his NTC. Also, they probably weren't going to go with Hoffpauir at 1st but would have pursued some other LH hitting 1st baseman. If they were that sold on Hoffpauir as a starter they would not have signed Bradley to play RF. Even if they had traded Lee and gone with Hoffpauir, they would have brought Fox up sooner and the 2 would have split time at 1st until Ramirez got hurt.
  11. Does the Cubs' losing yesterday make it more likely that they deal Harden? It would be idiotic to not offer arbitration to Harden since they can always trade him in May if they don't want to pay him. They should also be thinking that 2010 is the last chance for the current group. Without Harden they have a rotation of Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, Wells, Gorzelany. That's ok if you believe that Wells can continue to get by with very ordinary stuff and that Gorzelany can be an effective 5th starter. If they don't bring back Harden I'm afraid they rush Cashner or throw Shark in there.
  12. The only reason not to trade Heilman is so that Stevens, Caridad or Berg can pitch during the minor league playoffs. Any guesses as to who the team is? I'm going with the Dodgers. Their pen has logged a lot of innings.
  13. blow a lead a 3 run lead play some sub 500 ball mi the guy that thought they'd win fa a long way from first place So a guy in AAA La a team swept us in 3 tee we should invest in one that will bring us back to blow
  14. Jim Hendry prides himself on being a stand up guy- to a fault when necessary. He's not going to try any dirty tricks with Gregg. If he offered him arby it would be with the idea that they want him back which might be the case. A better idea would be to put Gregg through waivers (if he hasn't already) and try to trade him to a contender for a PTBNL. Surely there's at least 1 contender that needs another BP arm for the stretch run. Texas, for example. Maybe the Tigers.
  15. That's true but those players will be replaced by somebody and will then be added to the 40 man. It may very well be that 2 of gaub, parker, maestri, papelbon might make the team. if they don't the guys from that list that got protected would have to be exposed to waivers which is a lot more risky than the rule 5 draft.
  16. What was the Cubs' record while Ramirez was out? Change that record to .500 over that span and the Cubs are in the thick of the race. I agree that wasting money on vets is bad. I'm not suggesting that the Cubs spend more on the bench so much as saying spend it on good players. Fontenot was good off the bench last season and has been exposed as a full time starter. He was that cheap depth that the team needed. The Cubs' incompetent 2nd base starter- Fontenot- became our even worse 3rd baseman because of a lack of depth. I don't believe it's too crazy to suggest that playing out of position hurt Fontenot at the plate as well. It certainly didn't help.
  17. A great theme for this offseason would be to get deeper. A steady stream of injuries to key guys has been devastating. Good teams can play through these injuries by having competent back ups.
  18. Castillo hasn't hit this year and projects as a back up anyway. Probably better to protect Robinson and Clevenger and takes their chances with Castillo not hitting enough even as a back up catcher.
  19. according to the crawl on MLB network Christian Guzman cleared waivers and may be traded to the Red Sox.
  20. Maybe a little bit of both. The Cubs have been doing this sort of thing the last few years with Hart, Leicester and other guys with so-so Iowa stats.
  21. Whether they make the playoffs or not I expect the 2010 Cubs to look a lot like the 2009 Cubs with a few changes. offer Harden Arb. and try to sign him. upgrade 2nd base (Hendry and Piniella love Theriot plus SS are always hard to find) get a new closer somewhere, perhaps in house. Were it not for the avalanche of injuries this year, the Cubs probably win the division fairly easily. The Cubs are locked in with too many players to have much flexibility.
  22. I could see them having each of Wells and Harden skipping a start or 2 if that's what you mean. Wells being a rookie they *should* start thinking about his workload. It will be hard given the close race though and I'm sure they'll be tempted to use up impending FA Harden if they get desparate enough down the stretch.
  23. I believe they have until the end of the month to work out a deal but if they can't make a trade they have to either give him to the team that claimed him or pull him back. They can't try to trade him to someone else.
  24. When it comes to the rule 5 draft, don't teams get some sort of protection against losing multiple players? It seems like the trend lately is for teams to take hard throwing pitchers in the rule 5 like the Cubs did with everyone's favorite whipping boy David Patton. Thus Maestri is much more likely to be selected than Papelbon. In fact, if his last name was smith I wonder if anyone would even notice his existence as he's never really put up the kind of numbers that suggest he's a player to watch. nit pick: could we use the word filter to change rule v to rule 5 like when the words [expletive] would auto change to Rusch?
  25. Isn't he guaranteed 2 more years? He's got a 2-year contract with a team option for 2011 that becomes guaranteed with 55 games finished between 2009 and 2010. He's finished 33 so far this year, so that 2011 option is likely to be guaranteed. I didn't know about the vesting option. Though it makes the Indians even more likely to want to move him.
