  1. There's really no easy answer to that question as teams can send players from I believe high A- AAA. They also send a lot of guys that are trying to make the 40 man roster. It's usually more of a hitters league. Sam Fuld, for example, tore the league up maybe last year. I'd say it was most like AA because there are a lot of talented but raw players mixed in with experienced but lower ceiling guys.
  2. Perhaps these types of moves don't happen because other teams won't give up enough to make them worthwhile. I'd love to see the Cubs sell high on Theriot but I doubt many teams are beating down Hendry's door. On the other hand, he'd make a great return player to balance out a trade to a small market team that has a SS they won't be able to afford much longer. By himself he wouldn't bring much though.
  3. It seems odd that he didn't pitch during his senior year in HS. Did he play for a team that was really stacked or was there an injury concern?
  4. Day 1. Have a meeting with Milton Bradley and mend fences. Entertain offers but don't give him away. Offer Arby to Harden. Begin talks with the Orioles in case he accepts. If Harden shocks the world and accepts arby and gets $10 million plus then trade him in May to Baltimore who is looking for a veteran to anchor their starting rotation.
  5. Once again I have to ask this question: Have the down the line umpires ever gotten a call right that the base umpire couldn't have just as easily made?
  6. They finished in 2nd place and were still in the race down the stretch. If that's down the toilet then Hendry did basically the same with the Cubs but with a bigger payroll and more resources. Perhaps not but he hasn't been able to get the Cubs over the top and that is all that really matters. Of course there are worse GMs than Hendry. Things can always get worse. Hendry has been good at changing expectations for the Cubs but it seems like he has taken the team as far as he can.
  7. Perhaps they think they can flip Burrell somewhere else easier than they can move Bradley. If the intent is to keep Burrell they probably have to find a LH hitting 2nd baseman to bat at the top of the order- again with the disclaimer that Piniella believes this is important. That likely also means more Theriot at the top of the order and Fukudome batting 5th to break up the RH hitters. Making the lineup: Theriot 2nd baseman Lee Ramirez Fukudome Soriano Burrell Soto Pitcher On the plus side, Lee, Ramirez and Fukudome should get on base a lot in front of a pretty solid group of 6-8 hitters.
  8. There's actually a fair amount of optimism for Pie around here. Adam Jones seems to be injury prone so having Pie around is a good thing. On the other hand, with Markakis a lock to start and Reimold having a promising season they could part with Luke Scott if it got them Fox plus someone like Berg
  9. If they weren't going to offer him arby, why did they shut him down for the season when he was saying he was fine? Here's another scenario. If he accepts arby and they're stuck paying him $10 million they could trade him in May and save most of that money. another plausible scenario is that Harden could get signed by the Orioles who wouldn't lose their 1st round pick.
  10. Good thing he wasn't doing radio. He still seems a little over the top. Then he said Raburn "evened the slate" by throwing the winning run out at home. That's wrong since he gave up the tying run by playing that single into a triple. Had he held Cuddyer at 1st maybe they win it right there.
  11. He'll certainly get an invite to camp but he will probably be one of the first cuts unless Theriot or Blanco gets hurt and they can't find any gritty vets as NRIs.
  12. It's almost as though Hendry is a waiter reading off the specials: "This week we're featuring the vet reliever platter for 3 years / $14 million. The chef recommends our scrappy middle infielders. They're 2 for $4 million." All other contracts come with a no trade clause for no extra charge.
  13. How do those numbers compare to Lilly who seems to be the media darling? edit: not as good. Except for games started Lilly had a whip of 1.05 and an era+ of 141. It's a shame to waste such a good season.
  14. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429493/ Liam Niesson??? FTH are any of them thinking?
  15. I think the Cubs are saying that they won't give Harden a multi year deal so that they can offer him arby with less fear that he'd accept it. Harden ought to be able to get a 3 year deal from somebody. A team like Washington for example would be a good place for Harden. Assuming Strasburg debuts 12 days into the season they'd have a pretty decent 1-3 of their rotation to go with what is already a pretty good offense. Harden doesn't win them the division but at least the fans would have some hope.
  16. How is it that we all see this and the Bear's coaching staff doesn't?
  17. This bye week comes at the perfect time for me as I'll be busy all weekend. I thought that the Bears were pretty vulnerable up the middle last year even with Urlacher in there. Briggs may be a bad blitzer but Urlacher is equally horrible. It makes no sense to have Urlacher whose good at pass coverage blitzing and leaving the middle of the field open. Yet they didn't that seemingly on every 3rd and long. I like the idea of playing more nickel coverage now that Urlacher is out.
  18. I'm actually more than a little surprised that no one has made an A Team remake. Michael Strahan could play BA Barracus, Jason Lee could be the pilot. The guy that played faceman could probably still be the faceman and Chuck Norris would be Hannibal.
  19. So when was the last time we gave a middle reliever a long term contract like that and it ended well? Think about it Jim. There's a slight chill in the air. Pumpkins are turning bright orange. Leaves are turning red. Jim Hendry signs a middle reliever to a 3 year deal worth $14 million. These are the signs that fall is upon us.
  20. Would that be the most expensive platoon in history? I'd have to think it would be up there. So they do that, sign Cameron to play CF and then go with Baker/ Fontenot at 2nd. Works for me.
  21. Hendry & Piniella probably don't see SS as a big need so that eliminates Reyes. Isn't Wagner a FA? They could just sign him so no drama there- I don't see them signing him. I'll go with Halladay. The Cubs could use a true ace and the Jays like Wells. I could see people thinking (in vain) that the Cubs could land Halladay. Cubs get Vernon Wells Roy Halladay Jays get Randy Wells Milton Bradley Sean Marshall Jay Jackson Tyler Colvin Wellington Castillo
  22. Getting back to Kyle Orton, I caught a little of the game and the first TD pass should have been a pick six. It literally went through the defender's hands.
  23. Wasn't part of the reason for bringing in Bradley that the Cubs leadership (Lee, Ramirez) were too quiet and they wanted to spice things up?
  24. I could see Sandberg doing that as one of those "I'm the manager and you will do what I tell you moments" just to make a point. I can't believe he did this on a regular basis. I'm not a big fan of having position players bunt but if he is going to try to do that I would hope that they'd work on it more so that they can at least accomplish what they're trying to do. Giving away outs is bad enough. Giving them away without getting anything out of it is even worse.
  25. Why not just keep Young and hope he can stay healthy/ be effective as the 4th/ 5th starter assuming Harden walks? Start the season with a platoon of in house options or a scrap heap guy like Hermida and see where things stand in May. Or they could include Marshall in a package for a RF.
