  1. Can Oliver Perez be fixed? I haven't really followed his career but it seems like his problem is more about make-up than lack of talent. If they included that 2nd baseman that they had playing LF (the one that kept making the bad plays in LF) That could potentially be a good deal for the Cubs.
  2. I can see 3 scenarios with a Bradley trade: 1. Cubs pay all of his salary but get a very good prospect in return. Basically means some version of an in house platoon in RF 2. Cubs pay little of Bradley's salary and get "nothing" in return (minor league roster filler) 3. Cubs take back a bad contract (or 2) from another team. Given Hendry's track record, #3 is probably the most likely. But again, a guy that could turn Todd Hundley- the most hated player in recent memory- for 2 useful but overpaid players might be able to make this work. It should be a lot easier finding a taker for Bradley who's actually good at baseball than it was for Hundley.
  3. Joe Torre didn't fair very well before he started managing the Yankees. Piniella didn't win in Tampa because the talent wasn't there but has been much more successful with the talent that the Cubs have. Managers need talent on the field in order to win. I doubt any baseball people blame Trammell for not winning with those Tiger's teams.
  4. Hendry had a choice of keeping Eyre or that other terrible LH that got hurt toward the beginning of this season whose name I seem to have blocked from my memory. Neither were great options but a lot of people were surprised/ disappointed that Eyre was the one that had to go.
  5. Couldn't Miles be charged with attempted murder, because he killed the Cubs season?!
  6. off topic but what would Ozzie Guillen have to do to get fired that he hasn't already done?
  7. Before last year, Bradley was not a full time DH. In fact he didn't DH more than 10 games per year in any of his AL seasons. If GMs consider him a DH based on what he did in 2008 then they should also consider that he put up a .900+ OPS in that capacity. I don't see how that would count against him.
  8. Rowand isn't a good fit for the Cubs lineup. He doesn't get on base enough for the top of the order (or really any part of the order) and he doesn't hit for the kind of power Piniella and Hendry are looking for in the 5th spot. Bradley would be OK batting 5th if the guys batting behind him- Soto and Soriano- are hitting. That maximizes his value as an OBP guy similar to what Fukudome did the 1st 2 months last year. The same is probably true of Cameron with the added value of better defense. To save time, whether or not batting order makes a difference is irrelevent since Piniella and Hendry very much believe that it does and they have the only votes that count.
  9. If the Cubs got Mauer I'd platoon him with Soto at Catcher and 1st base. That way neither gets worn down by playing catcher every day but either can go back there full time if someone gets hurt. All this is predicated on Soto rebounding next season.
  10. Patton goes to Iowa where he replaces guys like Stevens or Caridad who are pitching out of the Cubs pen. People need to get past the idea that Patton sucks. He was over matched and not ready to get MLB hitters out on a regular basis. He has a live arm and showed enough upside to be a valuable piece perhaps the 2nd half of next season.
  11. I've been pretty impressed by what I've seen of Caridad since his call up. His command is better than I expected.
  12. the Cell is to beautiful ballparks what white bread is to spicy food. The only thing at all unique about the Cell is the exploding scoreboard- the only thing they kept from old Comiskey.
  13. Cooper was almost exactly .500 as manager of the stros with very marginal talent.
  14. *If* Hendry has to eat Bradley's contract and they have to fill holes in house and also have to cut payroll- all real possibilities- would likely mean not being very good the next couple years. I don't want Ryne Sandberg to ever manage the Cubs. Trammell absolutely should replace Piniella as manager. What I was trying to say was that the new owner might want to make a big spalsh by bringing back the hometown hero to manage the team because he won't/ can't afford the payroll it would take to improve the product on the field. As a Cubs fan, Ricketts probably has fond memories of Sandberg the player. That may cloud his judgement about Sandberg the manager.
  15. I find that whenever I try to root for another team that team always loses. Last years WS being an example. This is true of all sports seemingly though this past weekend I was rooting for Notre Dame and they actually won. I doubt anyone here could ever give up on the Cubs completely but I could definitely see not spending nearly as much time and energy following them. I have no memory of the 96 & 97 seasons.
  16. Piniella might be gone too. Fire Hendry and replace Piniella with Sandberg. As Gooney said somewhere else that would appease a lot of sportswriters and fans. In a way, I don't mind replacing Piniella with Sandberg. Somewhere down the line Sandberg is going to get his chance to manage the Cubs. It might as well be 2010 when they probably won't be very good anyway. Two losing seasons might be the price we pay as fans to remove the Sandberg menace permanently. Then in 2012 we'll (hopefully) have a bunch of young guys ready to contribute (Vitters, Colvin, J Jackson, perhaps B Jackson, Cashner etc)
  17. If his choices are coming back to Chicago and dealing with the fans, media, etc. or asking for his release, what would Bradley do? The MLBPA is better than the NFL union but if Bradley doesn't show up to ST, do the Cubs have to pay him? Another way around this is for Rickets to fire Hendry and then the new GM can say that Bradley gets a do over and they put all this behind them.
  18. At least 6 teams have wanted Bradley, is it really impossible that a 7th team would take a chance on him? When healthy, the guy can play. He brings baggage but every coach feels like he's the guy that can make it work. I could see a GM being able to sell the idea that Bradley got a raw deal from the Cubs. Hendry has many flaws but he's also been able to work miracles before in getting parts for garbage (Hundley for Karros & Grudz comes to mind). At the risk of defending Hendry, I'm guessing he considered this before he suspended Bradley.
  19. Fox went 0-4 last night so obviously Piniella was right to play him once a week. I wonder if we'll see Scales in CF before the season ends. He has the speed but I haven't seen where he's ever played CF. If he could add that to his resume that would help his cause as a super sub type guy.
  20. Was that before or after he took a bite out of a baseball and spit it at a hitter to intimidate him in an exhibition game?
  21. I can't say for sure but they probably saw enough of him playing CF in the minors to have a good idea of how well suited he is for that position. They probably started him in CF last night so Trammell and Piniella could see how he handled it.
  22. That's not really true. But the idea of acquiring a top of the order hitter is working backwards. Find the best 8 hitters you can, and then tweak the batting order to maximize value. Somebody needs to tell this to Hendry and piniella. They are the ones that think they need a LH bat in the 5 hole and a 1-2 hitter that can play 2nd base.
  23. LT Lee RG Hoffpauir C Fox LG Soto RT Gregg QB Lilly RB Bradley 3rd down back Scales
  24. Does anyone actually think that Piniella even runs the games anymore? I can think of a couple times where an OF has made a good play and Piniella goes over to Trammell and asks who's in LF. Sullivan is an idiot.
  25. Wells should be the 5th starter which means either re signing Hardern or someone like Sheets. Piniella wants a LH bat with enough power to "protect" Ramirez in the 5th spot. That player will have to play 2nd base or RF. Not sure who that will be but I'd guess it won't be Bradley or Hoffpauir. Assuming they extend Grabow (they seem intent on bringing him back) they fill the rest of the BP spots with in house candidates or NRI during ST. The Yankees will otubid for Figgins and the Cubs will have to "settle" for Hudson.
