  1. That's a very dumb statement. If just about anybody brought those guns into their place of work and let their coworkers know about their presence, whether it was a threatening or joking manner, lots of people would hear about it very quickly. Fair enough. In that scenario do you think people would call the police? If they thought it was a joke, I really doubt they would. Maybe the employee gets fired but to avoid publicity they probably keep the police out.
  2. Chicken or egg. How is Marshall supposed to build up durability when he's never allowed to pitch an entire season in the rotation? Hendry probably figures that if Marshall pitched out the rotation he's an average starter but he is an above average reliever. I believe Hendry values relief pitching more than he does back of the rotation starters.
  3. If the Cubs felt his shoulder was bad enough that they had to move him to 1st I doubt they would pick up his option for 2012. That gives you a lot more options only having to deal with that uncertainty for 1 year. As David said though, I'm not sure repeated throwing is going to cause as much of a problem as hitting with it being his non-throwing shoulder. Do the Cubs have an option? I thought it was Ramirez that had an opt out after this year.
  4. And if that is his attempt at a joke, it was lame, especially for the first post. He should have given a better effort. I thought it was intentionally lame to point out how tired the Gritty McHustler jokes are.
  5. Not trying to be an arse, but wow that was a lame first post. You are kidding, aren't you? Kidding about what? It was extremely unfunny and I think the grit and hustle schtick has been beaten to death on here. Ibringmylunchpail is pretty transparently a joke account.

  7. A sports locker room is not what I'd call a public arena. It's not like he was running with them onto the court. The fact that he's famous both helped and hurt him. If Roast brought 4 guns into a public place there's a good chance that no one would notice or care. Because Arenas is famous people knew and very much cared. He gets a light sentence because, as a public figure, it will be easily recognized if he were to be dumb enough to do it again. As far as the league goes, he's missing an entire year of being paid a lot of money. That sends a pretty straightforward message to other players not to be so dumb. Sorry but I don't really get the outrage. It seems like the system functioned exactly the way it was supposed to.
  8. What Pearl did was worse than what Calipari has done. But he did it a long time ago. We're a country of second chances and I'd like to believe that includes Bruce Pearl. But then I see his smug, fat face and I realize that to me he'll always be the guy that took advantage of an 18 year old kid out of pure spite.
  9. Another element to the decision is that Marshall seems to have durability concerns. Piniella doesn't hate Marshall. When he hates a pitcher he either never uses him or throws him out there to get killed when the game is already out of hand. Marshall looks to be the primary 8th inning guy depending on matchups. Though it really makes me wonder why they gave all that money to Grabow. I really like Caridad and am hopeful that he can play a big role in the 7th/ 8th from the right side. Russell seems like he would be the loogy, Shark is the 6th/ 7th guy and Berg is garbage time though he may start out as the 6th inning guy over Shark.
  10. Hendry is in win now mode. There's no way in the world Colvin is the starter unless they have absolutely no choice and he gets off to a really good start. This coming from one of Colvin's biggest defenders. He needs to show something at AAA before they even consider making him the starter unless everyone else in front of him gets hurt.
  11. IDK My brother and I often went to Wrigley in the late 70s and got bleacher seats with no problem. Place was mostly empty and the neighborhood around the park was not nearly as thriving as it is today. We would sit in the grandstand and sneak down as far as we could get. Old Andy Frain didn't care since it made the crowd look bigger on TV. It was that way until 1984. Wrigley Field itself wasn't nearly as big of a draw as a winning team.
  12. How could I be mad at Soriano, he's international, he's from Mexico! I'll forgive Hendry when Soriano retires at the end of the year and lets the team off the hook for the rest of his absurd contract. In other words, never.
  13. It seems like Niemi plays well until they say he's the man then he craps the bed. I don't see where they can afford to bench Huet completely since they might wind up needing him. What they're doing seems like the safe/ obvious strategy.
  14. I was curious how NIT teams have faired in the NCAA the following year. The only team to make the NIT final 4 and then make the NCAA final 4 the following year was Syracuse, who won the NC in 2003. Since 1990 the Big 10 has been a real force in the NIT with PSU, Minn, Mich and OSU all winning at least 1 NIT championship.
  15. You don't think he has out played Shark to this point? Silva has basically had two bad innings all of spring training. He has shown that his sinker is more effective and he has shown some glimmer that he can be somewhat effective as a 4-5 starter. I was as big on Shark as anybody prior to spring training, but based on his outings so far he hasn't shown any improvement and I'm coming around to agreeing with Gooney and others that think his window of opportunity is quickly closing. Marshall and Gorzelanny are starting options as well. But I think the Cubs would rather have one of them coming out of the pen and the other one gets the 4th spot until Lilly comes back. It really does come down to Silva and Shark now that Diamond has pitched his way out of consideration. I wonder if they'd consider Berg as an option? Piniella seems to like him a lot and has already said that he's made the team.
  16. Was that a Hoops sighting?
  17. I can think of a lot of things that didn't go right for the Cubs. You could argue that more things went right for the Cards. Nermind all the fluke productive years and pixie dust, how about Pujols emerging from relative obscurity to become arguably the best player in baseball?
  18. Cubs Wins - 86 1 under Soriano Home Runs - 27 over Lee RBIs - 105 under Ramirez Games played - 120 over Theriot Caught Steals - 10 under Piniella Ejections - 2 under Zambrano Home Runs - 3 under Castro Games played - 20 under Marmol Saves - 30 over Wins vs Cardinals - 9 push Fukudome Walks - 70 over Nady Home Runs - 12 over I think he'll get more like 400 ABs since Bradley won't play 162 games Fontenot AVG - .270 under but not by much.
  19. I believe it was a detroit based blogger doing what all columnists have done, say something stupid to get attention. I saw a story about that on Yahoo sports. The Yahoo guy couldn't understandwhy anyone would get offended by what happens at Blackhawk's games. It must be really amazing in person.
  20. Most definitely. Dislocated shoulder last season. Won't take live batting practice off his teammates this Spring Training. Triceps soreness. It won't end until next year when he is with some other team. And even then my fondness for him will cause me to worry a bit. He will always be one of my favorite players to watch take an at-bat and it's hard not to care about the well-being of a quality guy like that. Yeah if he misses the entire season I doubt he'll opt out of his contract. Unless the shoulder injury made him completely insane.
  21. Perhaps he learned from that experience and is better for it. Joe Torre wasn't very good in his first managerial stint but he did ok later with the Yankees. Also, practically anybody would be better than Sandberg. I'd rather remember him as a player than see him ultimately fail as manager. As a player he was a great hitter that didn't say much. It seems as manager he's Larry Bowa with maybe a little more credibility.
  22. If Silva starts your in trouble!
  23. How about we trade Theriot and Castro and anyone else in the system that Florida wants for Hanley Ramirez? This assumes that Florida won't be able to pay him what he'd command in FA and would be willing to use him to reload. That would never happen but I could see Hendry doing something similar with another team with a soon to be too expensive SS and Ramirez was the first name that came to mind. Hendry is firmly in win now mode so cashing in the farm system for an upgrade at SS would be something he'd probably love to do.
  24. Here's some Bears Jerseys I'd like to have: Dennis Lick Mike Hartenstein Bob Parsons Jeff Fischer Golden Richards Dennis McKinon
  25. Just realized I typed Sobel instead of Sopel. Every time I hear his name I think of Band of Brothers. Really good news abot Versus.
