  1. What whispers? What executives? What players? Who specifically has called out Prior?
  2. Because the emergency catcher is usually some marginal utility guy?
  3. Actually, that's exactly how the closer was invented. When the game was on the line the closer came in and finished the game from there. Guys like Bruce Sutter and Kent Tekulve would routinely pitch 2-3 innings. Of course back then SP threw a lot more complete games. Thanks for making me feel old.
  4. If we were talking about Guzamn I'd agree with this assessment. They will make room for Prior, particularly since they have Guzman waiting in the wings if Prior flops.
  5. With Wood out the Cubs could bring Cherry north with Prior used in long relief and Guzman sent to AAA. With Miller and Marquis in the rotation the long man will get plenty of work early on.
  6. Perhaps they're trying to send everyone at once so that Pagan goes unnoticed and unclaimed.
  7. Gary Cates?
  8. As far as 25th men go the Cubs can and have done worse than Bellhorn. I'd still prefer Cedeno largely because he's cheaper.
  9. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6024 Bah...What does he know?
  10. I don't disagree for the most part except that a healthy effective Prior makes the rotation alot better. It's hard to imagine a playoff rotation of Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis and Hill winning a playoff series.
  11. after #1 the rest are varying degrees of implausible: 2. Hendry likes Izturis and no one else does. 3. I guess it could happen but promoting Pie is problematic and inconsistent with the "win now" attitude the Cubs have. 4. I would think they'd be able to trade Miller rather than release him. 5. An OF of Ichiro, Soriano and Pie would have very little power. They might hit a combined 50 HRs and that's with Soraino hitting 35 of them 6. EPat makes more sense as a Sept callup. 7. They'd need to steal a lot of bases to make up for having very little power in the OF.
  12. Full House- 3 bachelors living together in San Francisco and none of them are gay.
  13. All of this depends on what happens' with Prior. If he's healthy they trade Miller who would have more value than Cotts or Ohman.
  14. I'll wait to judge that when we find out what Moore gets us in a trade. Does anyone know if Moore is going to play shortstop for Iowa this year? It's probably a lot more likely that he splits time between 1st, 3rd and corner OF. Personally, I'd like to see what he could do at 2nd base but with Patterson there it's unlikely to happen.
  15. I didn't get to see all of the games this year. Did Hester ever look good in coverage? From what I saw he didn't look very good but I didn't see enough to know if it was inexperience or incapable.
  16. They could piggy back Prior with one of the other starters to get him some more work. I wouldn't mind seeing a plan where Miller throws 5 then Prior comes in for 3 a couple times through the Rotation then see what happens. Of course that depends on Prior not only feeling good but being effective. Such an arrangement almost necessitates trading a relief pitcher and assumes Wood starting the season on the DL.
  17. This move is also cost effective which is a nice change from the days of paying $2 million for the same production from a veteran.
  18. I'm guessing that by pitching depth they mean that the rotation is Zambrano, medicority and question marks. The Cards have shown that productive offense + quality BP+ medicore rotation with legit ace = division champs. If the Cubs get the kind of offensive boost they expect from having Soriano and a healthy Lee they can certainly win the division.
  19. I paid $7 for a beer at a bar near Times Square. There's nothing like taking out another 20 to cover the cost of 3 beers.
  20. He only has to clear revocable major league waivers. He'd never end up with any team who put in the claim. If this were outright/special waivers or otherwise irrevocable ML waivers, you'd be correct. But I agree the best option is staying in Mesa for the reasons Raisin explained. I understand that the waivers are revocable but if your KC isn't it worth taking the chance? There's no risk in claiming him except annoying Hendry and KC's GM doesn't seem to mind that too much.
  21. To be clear, Prior does have options but he also must clear waivers. I don't believe that other teams won't claim him. Why wouldn't KC for example claim Prior? They are already on bad terms with Hendry and its not like hiding Mark prior in their BP is going to hurt their WS aspirations. So extended ST is really the only option right now.
  22. How can Prior have an option left? He's been up since mid 2003. Shouldn't his option years have ended last year?
  23. That and talk is cheap. I'll need to see him not bunt in the 1st inning, not let a starter throw 125 pitches and not start Izturis because he's a veteran before it goes up. Hopefully it will.
  24. Thanks, It seems like 04 and 05 were very Izturisesque for Renteria. Though his best season was with the Cards so maybe that means something returning to the NLC. The SS I was thinking of was Orlando Cabrera.
  25. Reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Platoon "Barmes been shot 7 times! And he ain't dead! Barmes ain't meant to die"
