  1. because Manny would never play there? same reason all the Manny/Teixeira/Dunn to the Nationals rumors were dumb Do you really think he'd turn down a 4 year / $100 million contract because he didn't want to play for the Orioles? It doesn't seem like he has many options right now. The Angels, Yankees, Cubs and Mets have all said no. The only other team that could afford him is the Dodgers and they aren't going to give him the years he wants. Tex to the Nationals was dumb because he had the luxury of being sought after by at least 5 teams. Dunn to the Nats could still happen if that's where the money is. Teams aren't exactly lining up for his services either.
  2. I don't understand why they don't have any reported interest in Manny Ramirez. He would legitimize their lineup and sell tickets.
  3. As for the 1st part, if Hill showed any signs of having figured it out they could get rid of Vizcaino to make a spot on the roster. As for the 2nd part, between 15-25 on the O's depth chart is not someone that is very likely to help the big club.
  4. The giving him away for nothing now instead of seeing if he can do anything in ST and if he can't releasing him then. I understand that the Cubs have Minor League rosters they need to fill but couldn't they just sign a ML FA. If they bring Hill to ST and he still hasn't figured it out try sending him through waivers. If he doesn't clear then so be it. If he did then they'd have another shot at fixing him. Hill has more of a chance to help the Cubs than whoever they got in this deal.
  5. Balance is the key. Defense is important but ultimately the offense has to be competent -good in order to win. The Steelers offensive rankings are a bit deceptive due to their tough schedule.
  6. Yeah, but you know....when it came down to crunch time, and the Cardinals needed a big stop, that shaky defense they have just couldn't get it done for them. That's true but they had already had to come up big too many times before then.
  7. Give piniella's disdain for Wuertz the Cubs are better off trading him since they should be able to get something useful for him- perhaps a AAA, good glove, can't hit SS that can be called up if Theriot gets hurt.
  8. Defense wins championships* *unless you have the best defense in the NFL, blow a 13 point lead and then have to be bailed out by your offense.
  9. This. Hey Jim, We get it. You used to work for Andy MacPhail. That doesn't mean every trade has to be with him. I look at it this way, if Hill figures it out he'll be doing it for the Orioles whom the Cubs will never have to play. So if he'd rather give him away for nothing than see what he has in ST, the Orioles is a good a place to hide him as anywhere.
  10. He's going to be way too expensive for us. Wiggington will be too expensive and will go some place where he has a better chance of playing time. He certainly would look good on our bench though. Wiggington got non tendered by the Astros because they had no money to pay out this off season so it isn't as though he is out there looking for or expecting a big payday. He is probably waiting to see where Hudson signs and how much he gets before he does anything. It's possible money won't be as much of an issue now that the ownership issue has been settled. If I were Wiggington, I'd like my chances of being able to win the starting 2nd base job out of ST if my competition was Fontenot and Miles.
  11. I could see Cashner as maybe being the closest possibility for the fast track if they decide to turn him into a short reliever like what they did with Smardz last year. I don't believe that's very likely but Piniella likes power arms and there's a pretty good chance they'll need one down the stretch.
  12. Ricketts wins Cubs bid. Corncob and Palsey unavailable for comment.
  13. 1. The Cubs got Bradley to break up the string of RH hitters, that means he will bat 4th or 5th, possibly 2nd but only if Fukudome hits like he did last April. Piniella's lineup: Soriano Fontenot Lee Bradley Ramirez Fukudome Soto Theriot Switch Lee and Ramirez and you have my lineup.
  14. Using PT as a punishment may work with the kids but what will he do if he ever does ( God help us) manage the Cubs?
  15. wieters will probably be more valuable at first base than vitters will be at third base. and quicker, too. True. It would be nice to have a 1B ready to go when Lee's contract is over. I didn't know they panned on moving Wieters to first, I thought they were keeping him at catcher They have lot's of option to play 1st after Lee. Ramirez moving to 1st to make room for Vitters for example. If Soto keeps hitting they may want to move him to first, especially if Wellington Castillo develops.
  16. Perhaps this is a way to keep him humble. If they start him at Daytona and he struggles they send him down knowing what he needs to work on and then they keep him there until they're happy with his progress. If he's successful then They can give him the end of the year promotion to AA. The Cubs have been pretty aggressive with top prospects in the past (Corey Patterson) Let's hope they learned something from that experience.
  17. Edmonds would probably have still been available a couple weeks later. Piniella started Johnson against some very bleh RH pitchers when he could have put Pie in a position to succeed. The fact that he gave him so few PAs before banishing him to the doghouse makes no baseball sense.
  18. Of course, had they played Pie last year he might have developed enough to make signing Bradley unneccessary. Had they given Pie a real chance he may have shown enough to where they could trade him and get much more value in return. That being said, the Cubs handling of Pie last year had more to do with off the field issues than anything else.
  19. Someone posted an interesting comparison on another board: QB A: 65.4% comp, 28591 yards, 182 TD/114 INT, 8.0 Y/A, 93.8 QB rating QB B: 63.0% comp, 26446 yards, 197 TD/86 INT, 7.2 Y/A, 92.9 QB rating Both players have made it to multiple Super Bowls. Are both, just one, or neither Hall-worthy and why? NFL HOF is more about reputation than stats. Very few people know how to calculate QB rating which means that writers probably don't care about it very much. I was going to guess that QB A is Brett Favre and QB B is Kurt Warner.
  20. Never going to happen. He's going to the Giants, bank on it. They're apparently strongly considering bringing Plaxico back. If they do, I doubt they bring in another extremely high paid WR - especially since they'll still have Toomer, Hixson, Steve Smith and Sinorice Moss. FWIW, I thought I heard Coughlin say they weren't bringing him back. In any case, there's a good chance he's in jail when next season starts. Finally, Toomer is old and the other guys aren't making very much. They can afford to bring him in if they want to.
  21. I have to say this worked out nicely for me. The Ravens fans can go back into hiding and the Eagles fans are left to whine about not getting the pass interference call. It's also the best matchup with the good offense and decent defense vs. Good defense and decent offense. Haven't seen the early line but I'm guessing it's Steelers by 8.5 with the number in mid 40s.
  22. It's pretty clear that, barring any rainouts, the Cubs will finish the season 0-162. Haven't people been saying all along that Harden would get hurt at some point this season? That he wasn't going to start a full slate of games?
  23. Given the contracts/ extensions they gave to Vasher, Urlacher and Briggs, what money do the Bears have to throw at Peppers in the unlikely event that he doesn't get franchised by Carolina?
  24. What could have been: Jody, Jody Davis catcher without a job
  25. Starting rotation depth would be a good thing. If Marshall is the 5th starter and Zambrano and Harden got hurt at the same time it could kill the Cubs' chances. Maybe that's true of every team losing their 2 best pitchers but given their injury histories it should be a concern for the Cubs. That being said, Rob Dibble has been singing Garland's praises all off season. That's enough to scare me away.
