  1. We live in a pretty rural area. My wife determined that for her business (insurance/ investments) the phonebook ad was a waste of money.
  2. it's a miracle. best move the bears have made all off-season. Who is going to play RT? They have an unproven LT, an aging center, a young and average LG, and an old RG. Why did they have to lowball St. Clair? He played pretty good last year I thought. Cody Balogh is the 1st team RT in minicamp this week. He was a practice squad guy last year. Frank Omiyale will probably be the starting RT when all is said and done. Oh and St. Clair didn't "play pretty good". He gave up the 2nd most sacks in the NFL, for a team that didn't get sacked all that much. He was a decent run blocker though. St. Clair might have been ok at RT or RG but he was clearly overmatched at LT against any speed rusher. Kyle Orton should be sending the Browns a fruit basket or something.
  3. i'd give them a 1st rounder and orton. maybe another 1st rounder. I agree and I believe that if Angelo were willing to do that the Broncos should accept. Among the teams that need a QB none have one as good as Orton that they could send back. The Broncos play in a weak division and could make the playoffs with Orton at QB. They could still draft Sanchez and having Orton around would allow them time to not throw him to the wolves. I doubt that they would want Urlacher as part of any package as they would probably rather use the picks from the Bears to take the best defensive player available.
  4. That's basically what the Cubs did when they traded Marquis for Vizcaino in the first place. True. I should've said "so we're going to trade a guy we don't want who has no use for another guy we don't want who has no use." What he's saying is that it may have been cheaper to just release Marquis then to trade him for a bad contract. I don't think so. There is no way that the Cubs releasing Marquis would ever have been cheaper. They would have had to pay his full contract if that happened. Even if the Cubs release Vizcaino today, they still save approximately 5 million dollars over what releasing Marquis would have done. Aren't the Cubs paying part of Marquis' salary? I thought that they had given the Rockies money to even things out somewhat.
  5. This. And bitter about the way that Pie's time here ended up. People knew that his trade value was diminished, but going from "untouchable" to a trade for neither Brian Roberts or Jake Peavey is an awful taste. I think people, for the most part, give Hendry credit when he does something well. People praised him for the, Ramirez, Lee, Nomar, Harden trades, and came around to the Edmonds/Johnson acquisitions when they proved to be great moves. I think fans turn on him quickly now sometimes because he has a high payroll and can't quite get it right all the time to get a team to the WS. The bad moves gets magnified because of frustration. That and the bad moves tend to be really horribly bad moves like trading for Juan Pierre, giving Marquis $10 million/ year, giving Soriano way too much money, selling low on just about every prospect and finally trying to mimic whoever won the WS last year.

  7. Pretending for a second that moving runners over is important, who has a better chance of executing a sac bunt, Theriot or Fukudome? Who has a better chance of advancing a runner with a groundout, a RH hitter (Theriot) or a LH hitter (Fukudome)? The answer in both cases is Fukudome. Against LH pitchers you could make the argument for Theriot over Miles or Johnson.
  8. Why would you say that? Hill started with most of the other starters on Wednesday night. Randy Bush seemed to give them an equal chance in his interview on Thursday. I would assume they would be leaning towards Bako but I haven't seen anything from the club about that yet. this is a battle that i'm totally interested about. Who's hotter: Rosanne or Rosie O'Donnel?
  9. The Giants and D bags should give them a lot of competition. Meanwhile the Cubs get to beat up on a pretty mediocre NL Central. The Dodgers will need a lot of best case scenarios from their lineup to have the best record in the NL.
  10. Wouldn't they be better off with a guy like Holt or Harrison then? Those guys don't offer near the risks and won't complain about Peterson running the ball 30 times per game.
  11. The fact that they knew this test was coming and still over 100 players failed makes me wonder how many were able to get clean in time to pass. Even if it was just those 104 guys that's still about 3-4 from every team. I would love to see Jeter's name on that list just to see how the media would find a way for it to be OK for him to do it. "He wants to win that badly."
  12. I've told this story before but our baseball coach has a video called Dusty Baker teaches hitting or something to that effect. In the video, Dusty's assistants show the kids the fundamentals of hitting. Then at the end Dusty pretty much contradicts everything they said.
  13. Off hand it's hard to see a better fit for TO than the Bears, at least among teams that are any good. Maybe Tampa Bay?
  14. At the time of the signing, Abreu would have wanted the same years and money. So the question is not would you rather have Abreu for 1 year, the question is would Hendry have been OK starting the season with Hoffpauir in RF and trying to trade for someone later on if necessary.
  15. The issue is more so to save his legs and avoid injury than his being a Dunn-like liability out there. Does fine= not horrible?
  16. Marmol hits Soto in the face with a fastball. Soto charges the mound and slams him to the ground tearing up his shoulder. Both their careers end on the same day. As long as that doesn't happen, I'm ok with the WBC. It may become a big deal to the rest of the world but not here because players will always opt out to avoid getting hurt.
  17. Millen was better than decent, he was one of the better ones around. He's still a very good analyst. The fact that he was a horrible GM really speaks more to the difficulty of that job and how player's knowledge of the game doesn't translate to GM knowledge. Being an analyst takes 1% of the research of a GM so it really shouldn't surprise anyone that someone could be a good analyst and a terrible GM. Steve Phillips has a job because he says dumb things to get a reaction. It would be pretty boring if all they had was smart people agreeing with each other.
  18. Peter King is an idiot.
  19. 11 days (or games) into the season pushes the arb clock back one year.
  20. Any interest in any of the forner TB Bucs? Warrick Dunn might be a nice spare part to split time with Forte. I assume Brooks is finished or wants too much money.
  21. Yeah. This article needed a quote from Cubs HOF 2nd baseman Ryan Sandberg.
  22. This was the most talented team in the NFC in 2006. But time flies in the NFL and Angelo is nuts if he thinks the talent is there now to win. The offense cannot succeed without an influx of talent, and the defense is no longer good enough to win on its own. The wasted draft picks the past few years have caught up to them quickly, and they absolutely must find 2, and maybe 3, immediate upgrades either through the draft or free agency. Though if the Bears had beaten Atlanta and Houston as they should have, they make the playoffs. Those losses can very readily be pinned on poor coaching. In that sense he's right although the goal should be more than just to make the playoffs and see what happens. The other thing to keep in mind is that it isn't as though they are going to not draft any players or that they are fine with what they have. This speech was really more a matter of don't get your hopes up GM speak. That way he's covered if he has another crappy draft.
