  1. That makes sense but Hendry has always prided himself on being a "straight shooter "(even to a fault). When he wants a player he's typically pretty transparent about it. I think this is more the sort of thing the manager is supposed to say in case the trade doesn't go through.
  2. Everything I read sounds like the Padres want young pitching. Possibly the Marlins. It won't be the Royals because Greinke is unavailable and if he was he would cost (in players) almost as much as Peavy. I'm not sure what we could offer the Rays for young pitching. Minnesota's young pitching would cost too much (in players). I offered a trade suggestion at OH: Marquis + Vitters + Wells for Scott and 2 of Mikolo/Olsen/Tillman/Arrieta. Cubs flip the 2 young pitchers with Pie, Marshall, and Hart for Peavy. Cubs end up with Scott and Peavy. Possibly we could get Cedeno (to Padres) and Greene (to the O's) involved. More likely, The Cubs are sending Marquis as part of the deal and Towers found a team that will give him some very young arms for him. That team may very well be the O's though not for any of the players mentioned. If Towers got Pie, Marshall, Hart, Marquis and Vitters for Peavy and then flipped Marquis to someone for 2 players that were currently in Low A that would be a respectable deal, particularly since he has only one bidder and must make the deal.
  3. I guess loyalty to the only franchise he's ever played for doesn't count for anything? The O's, long term, probably are better off trading Roberts now but they still have to field a team and they still have to sell tickets. There asking price is high because Roberts is a very popular player and O's have aren't far enough removed from the glory days of Cal Ripken to embrace rebuilding. They should be but they aren't.
  4. Which is more likely, Fontenot getting significant time at SS or in CF?
  5. If they're getting Teahen to replace Ward/ Hoffpauir's spot I wouldn't mind him on the team in place of Fontenot as the LH bat off the bench.
  6. Agreed, however Eyre mentioned they had un-needed extra pressure from the 100 year thing. I can't imagine Cubs pressure is greater than ND. Maybe you could just interview me. I think I can answer all of the above questions the same way he would. Which is more pressure, pitching at wrigley or Notre Dame? definitely pitching. Most people are looking at the guy with the ball on a football field. Everyone's watching the pitcher How much pressure did the 100 years ad? We tried not to think about it. Would you rather be a starter or a reliever? right now I'm just happy to be in the big leagues and I'll do whatever they want me to do
  7. Perhaps a change of scenary would do him good. Wasn't there talk last year of him wanting to sign with an east coast team which prompted the rumors about his availability?
  8. Mussina has always been pretty good but not great. He's played on a lot of very good teams which to me waters down his win total which is what HOF voters look at first. Then they look at Ks and he didn't have 3000. He still probably makes it in but not on the 1st ballot regardless of who else retires this year.
  9. An important point in this list is its length. Since there are more than 39 names on the list a team like the Yankees can sign any 3 of these players- at least that's my understanding of the rules under the latest CBA. Anyone know for sure?
  10. Didn't the Cubs get Ceda from the Padres for Walker? Seems like if they gave him away once, it's hard to believe he'd be a deal breaker now.
  11. Think Andy Sisco. And look at how he turned out (although things may have been different had he been able to stay in the minors for 3 more years). Didn't do the Cubs any good though. Depending on how things shake out, I wouldn't be shocked to see Veal make the 25 man roster. If the Cubs traded Marshall they'd likely want another LH in the pen and would be willing to take a look at Veal in that capacity given their other options. After all, isn't that where his future lies anyway? It's a long shot but certainly possible.
  12. Wow, talk about gutting the farm system .. I heard an interview with Gary Hughes on XM yesterday. He said the Cubs are in all out win now mode. I guess they figure the new owner will give them the money they need to rebuild the farm down the road. Of course the fallacy there is that money is what's needed to rebuild a farm system. Buying up the guys that fall in the draft due to signability can only get you so far, and often that backfires. What's really needed is superior amateur scouting, drafting, and player development. And time. Not to be a smart a$$ but that does cost money. That's exactly why the Cubs are where they are now. They've shifted their allocation of resources from player development to salaries for the Major League team. Most teams - even the Yankees- can't afford both a high payroll and player development.

  14. Last year, the package the Twins got for Santana didn't look all that great which gives hope that the Cubs can put something together for Peavy. Pie, Vitters, Hill, Cedeno, Theriot, Wuertz and Marquis + cash for Peavy and Greene. It's not a great package but it clears salary which is the object of the execercise plus it gives them some pieces that can be plugged in right away. Marquis could thrive in the spacious confines of Petco. At the very least he'd buy time for their pitching prospects and eat innings. Hill could be a real steal having escaped the clutches of uncle Larry. Pie and Cedeno's gap power + speed work better at Petco than they would at Wrigley. Theriot is gritty. He also hit 300 last year which has value to some people.
  15. Marshall for Kearns straight up with be a horrible, horrible deal on our end. Wuertz (if we had more in house options for the BP this year) would be doable, but not Marshall. Right now the Cubs have these options from the right side for the ML pen: Marmol Gregg Guzman Gaudin Simardzilla Hart Ascanio Wells not to mention whatever NR guys they may invite to ST. They can most definitely afford to trade Wuertz.
  16. Assuming the rotation will stay constant - with Dempster/Peavy/ or FA in place of Dempster and that the Cubs will go with a 7 man pen they have room for 2 LH relievers or 3 if they trade or release Wuertz (This also assumes that they keep Simardzilla in AAA to stretch him as a starter) It's possible they may also want to send Marshall to Iowa's starting rotation to start the season. Those are the conditions necessary for Hill to make the Cubs pen. So a trade or trades involving Hill and Wuertz seems likely. They would make an attractive package to some teams like say Texas that needs all the pitching they can get.
  17. I've only seen a handful of games in which he's played but in those games I can think of more than one occasion where he made a great defensive play at 2nd. I don't know if he could handle SS or not though. I saw him play when he was at low A Delmarva and came away with the same impression. I can say his arm is no worse than Theriot's at SS. I seem to remember him playing a little 3rd base for the Shorebirds too but I may be confusing him with that non prospect that the Cubsa signed from the O's organization that played AA either last year or 2 years ago. Brian something.
  18. Lee, Marquis, Pie for Adam Jones then the Cubs sign Texiera to play 1st.
  19. Why would the Twins trade Slowey?
  20. Is he the 2nd coming of Ryan Theriot? He's making a good showing in the AFL which means practically nothing except that he's been playing some SS there. Could he perhaps be a cheap replacement for Cedeno if he does get traded?
  21. If he signed with the Giants he'd have a lot of games pitching in pitcher friendly parks.
  22. I heard that the Cubs might include Derosa in the Peavy trade. I heard it on XM radio and it could have been nothing more than speculation. Still, I could see Hendry including Derosa, sliding Theriot over to 2nd and signing Furcal to play SS. If that were to happen Matt Craig goes from unwanted to having a good chance to make the 25 man roster as the corner sub.
  23. i'm pretty sure that derosa is earning his keep. I don't think he's saying that any of them weren't. He's arguing that the offense should be good enough no matter what else is in the lineup with those guys. Yes, Thanks David...that's what I was trying to get at. Anybody know how much money our supposed top 3 offensive guys are making next year...or compared to the top 3 guys on the top offensive clubs.[/quote] Do you mean the Cubs?
  24. I think you have an extra syllable in line 2
  25. I'm vice President of our Little League, does that count? The key to politics is sincerity. If you can fake that you've got it made.
