  1. I predict the Cubs will win the NL Central.
  2. I have a hard time believing he's afraid of being hit.
  3. If you go, ask them never to do any more football broadcasts. Ever
  4. I think, at some level, fans like to think that the announcers agree with their choice of teams.
  5. If the D-Backs can get back in the race just enough to delay the Dodgers clinching date then it's advantage Cubs regardless of the matchup.
  6. Burnett got 11/55 a couple years ago, with his history. No doubt Sheets would get probably 4/60. That the sort of move the Orioles would make.
  7. He was going to be a risky sign given his injury history. On the plus side, elbow pain is not as bad as shoulder pain in terms of what they can do to fix it.
  8. I have very little respect for the people that vote for these awards. I think they will pick Pujols not because he is obviously better in every important way (except HRs) but because Howard has a low BA.
  9. Most announcers are horrible. Harry Caray was horrible before the stroke and not much worse afterwards. If you hate Santo for being bad you should hate Harry Caray x 1000. Santo is a fan in the booth. Harry Caray was a guy pretending to be a whining fan in the booth. People act like Harry Caray wore his heart on his sleeve regrading the Cubs. The reality is that he was a broadcaster for Cubs fan's 2 most hated teams the Cards and the Sox. I listen to a lot of Cubs games on XM. The Cubs could do a lot worse than Hughes/ Santo.
  10. The last 7 games will be a tryout for the post season roster for these guys: Pie: will have to hit to justify a spot Ward: will get a couple starts to show he deserves it over Hoffpauir Guzman: Piniella will see what he has once the games don't matter, hopefully he likes what he sees. Howry: will have to not suck I'm not counting on Gaudin being available. I'm not so sure that, given the cause of his injury, that management is too happy with him. This is based more on feeling than actual evidence. Marquis gets a courtesy rostering. I'm disappointed that Hendry didn't make a waiver deal for a RH bat to at least keep that option open.
  11. I've seen this mentioned a few times now. I wonder if it really matters whether they start or not. Z, Harden, and Dempster have been around long enough for the Mets to know what to expect. It matters more for Harden since they haven't seen him in person.
  12. I can just hear Joe Buck's call: "... and the Cards lose to a team in the Cardinals division who then clinches the NL Central. It a sad day for the best baseball fans in the world."
  13. I thought I had heard Lou say early on that this was it. This was going to be his last contract and his last shot at a championship before retiring. I remember that too. However he may want to go for one last season. The bigger question though is what street gets renamed in piniella's honor? I vote for Waveland.
  14. It really only matters during the Mets series. Barring a sweep of the Brewers, the Cubs will still need to beat the Cards 1-2 times to clinch. The day after they clinch no one will question playing the 2nd team- which still isn't that bad. The way things are going for the Brewers, those last 3 games may not matter for them either. So Harden maybe doesn't pitch against the Mets and possibly no Zambrano either. Lilly and Dempster maybe have abbreviated starts and Marquis pitches as long as he can. That's really not that much different from what the Cubs have been doing for the last 3 weeks.
  15. I won't go as far as the bolded part but I agree with everything else.
  16. reminds me a lot of this: "No man can stop me" Boasts Archduke Franz Ferdinand at the Sarajevo Archduke's convention. That's actually from Our Dumb Century (The Onion)
  17. My speculation is that I think Melvin went to him at the order of Attanasio after Melvin fought to not fire Yost. Attanasio asked for an answer as to why things were failing again, and if Yost could give him an adequate answer he'd stay on. In standard Yost fashion he stood there with his dopey grin on his face and got fired when Attanasio wasn't happy with the response "I don't know." If that really is the case then they are even dumber than Yost. What is he supposed to say? What should he try that he hasn't already done? How does he keep his starters not named Sabathia and Sheets from being terrible?
  18. I never said it would be impossible- the Rays have proven that. The Reds are in that awkward position that they are bad enough to not be a threat but not bad enough to get a top 5 pick. Let's see what Jockety can do there.
  19. The Reds are in the same sort of situation that the Orioles are in. Every year going in the Yankees and Red Sox are going to be good. Now the Rays look like they have a team that will be in the middle of things for a while. The O's have a good young nucleus but lack the pitching to compete in a very competitive division. The Cards and Astros are usually pretty good. The Cubs- if the new owner will spend moeny should also be good. Milwaukee has a good young nucleus. So every year it will be a struggle for the Reds. Their home ballpark is going to be tough on their pitching staff.
  20. They talked to Sabathia on XM 175. He had never pitched on short rest in his career and it had never crossed his mind to ask about pitching in the PHil series. Moving Sabathia was a risky move anyway. If he had been ineffective and lost it would have been pretty demoralizing. Saving him for the Cubs gives them a better chance of winning that 1 start. In the end, the Brewers need simply to win games. While a 2 game lead looks better than a tie the reality is that they have an easier schedule than the Mets who must also hold off the Phillies. The phillies have 6 left against the braves and 3 each against the Marlins and Nats. The Mets have 4 against the Cubs, 4 against the Nats, 3 against the Marlins and 3 vs Atlanta. Advantage Phils. The Brewers have 6 with the Cubs, including 3 that they likely won't need/ will be resting players, 3 vs. the Pirates and 3 vs the Reds. I'd take that over who the Mets play.
  21. I'd rather have Z pitch a home game during the WS for the competitive edge of having his bat in the lineup.
  22. He'll play every game after they clinch until the end of the season. If he can't hit his way out of it you may be right but he'd have to look pretty bad for that to happen.
  23. Did it ever occur to you that the Cubs have never won a WS at Wrigley? Maybe that's been the problem all along. :-"
  24. The actual TV spot was about 2 minutes long which was disappointing. Are they going to air the whole thing?
