  1. While we're tossing around bad ideas, instead of moving Soriano to 2nd where we know he'll be terrible, how about moving him to 3rd? He'd still be terrible (probably) but at a less important position defensively. If the Brewers could suffer through a season of Ryan Braun's "defense" at 3rd can't the Cubs stomach 2 months of Soriano at 3rd? He's a former SS and certainly has the arm. This would then open up LF for the mythical Hoffpauir/ Fox platoon. The defense would be bad but the offense might make up for it.
  2. Football teams and basketball teams have guards. You can't change the guards on your baseball team..... there aren't any !! Heinrich to play guard for the Bears? How many sports have forwards besides basketball? Volleyball and Hockey both have Centers.
  3. Jake Fox at C, ha. F it. Let's go with the contrarian strategy. Most teams have come around on D, maybe we can buck the trend and butcher it up with cheap mashers trying to hold on while hilariously overmatched on D. Would be entertaining on all counts. Hoff in OF! Fox at 1B/C/OF! Soriano at 2B! Russell Branyan! While we're at it just bring up Flaherty for SS/3B...haha ok I'm kidding but to some extent, it may be the direction we're going right now. Works for the Brewers, at least lately.
  4. The Cubs aren't going to trade Lee. Even if they could they probably don't want to. The Mets might be interested in Fox to fill in at first or maybe Hoffpauir. Lee is not going to get benched, but Bradley might.
  5. The O's aren't going to trade Roberts. They just aren't. It may not make baseball sense but Roberts is still the face of the franchise.
  6. This is just a few years after she reportedly almost died in child birth, right? I'm just wondering who will be the first blogger to joke about Phil being the one with breast cancer. I think (hope) they'll at least wait until she's ok.
  7. Same reason they move good hitting catchers to corner OF or 1st base. The wear & tear of playing SS and his size work against him staying there forever. 50 years ago Ernie Banks was Hanley Ramirez.
  8. I'd definitely prefer they limit him by letting him skip starts as opposed to loogy duty. I can't see them using him exclusively as a loogy but more of a full innging with key LH due up.
  9. If Cabrera could still play 3rd he'd be on the list. He's closer probably to not even being able to play 1st with his expanding waistline. How long will they be able to keep Ramirez at SS?
  10. With the injury history of the Cubs starting staff, Marshall will get more starts this season even if they do replace him with Wells. I just can't see Wells continuing to be effective.
  11. Another strike against Pujols is that he plays 1st base which ought to be an easy position to fill. That givers the edge to younger players at positions of higher demand like Ramirez, Longoria and Sizemore.
  12. Since when have the Padres cared about the fanbase? If they could get 2 guys that were MLB ready and a couple good prospects for Gonzalez (things the Cubs don't have) they'd have to do that deal. With Gonzalez they're going to finish last. If I were a Padres fan I'd rather see them add more pieces to rebuild than hang on to the one guy that's any good. That being said, teams just won't trade prospects anymore so I doubt they could find a deal they liked for Gonzalez.
  13. Don't the Padres have a highly touted 1st base prospect in the minors that Gonzalez is currently blocking? I thought I remembered some speculation to that effect when the Peavy talks were in full swing. Trading Gonzalez now would get a better return because the team getting him would be guaranteed more than just a rental. The Padres would probably want pitching for Gonzalez. I doubt they'd want Marmol as he will only get more expensive. A team like the Padres really can't afford to pay a lot for a set up man.
  14. Once again it seems like a lot of the WBC players are off to slow starts to the season. Jimmy Rollins, Geo Soto and Derosa being 3 off the top of my head that have struggled through April.
  15. I'm actually more interested in Soto's HR and the fact that he had 2 hits. It would be nice for him to get things going.
  16. I take it you've never pulled a hamstring.
  17. The Santo analogy is no good because the Cubs had virtually no chance of ever having to play the White Sox. Favre playing for the Vikings would be like Sandberg playing for the Cards and winning a WS and then going all Mark Grace afterwards to stick it to his former team.
  18. I'm sure the Cubs felt that Hoffpauir could fill in in RF when Bradley was out. Derosa was a valuable player at 2nd and as a backup at 3rd but I wouldn't want him to be the regular or even the semi regular RF.
  19. Here's another dumb trade idea: Lee to the White Sox for Contreras. Lee has been struggling and Contreras has been relegated to the pen. Contreras replaces Patton and maybe gets his act together as the long man/ spot starter. By going to the Sox, Lee doesn't have to relocate his family. The Sox don't need him but otherwise it's a win for everyone.
  20. If trading him was a possibility (i.e. no NTC or 10/5 rights) then the key would be to wait for a hot streak. If he could put together 10 or so straight games of really hot hitting, some GM would be convinced he was back to form and give something decent up for him. Convincing a GM that Lee has value is not the problem. The problem is paying his contract this year and next. Hendry has been very reluctant to pay players to go away. So if you want to speculate about trading Lee, look for teams that have an equally bad contract in a place where Lee maybe wouldn't mind going. That seems like a pretty tall order since 1st base is not typically a position that teams have trouble filling.
  21. The issue would be backup SS. Is Freel capable at SS? Scales is more of a 2nd base/ 3rd base guy.
  22. Delete this thread or attention whore Favre wins.
  23. I always thought of Dope having a good work ethic and Von Joshua is a very good hitting coach. IIRC, he had a hand or wrist injury and what he probably needed was to recover from that fully.
  24. To cover up your jean shorts.
  25. Hendry is like the RCMP, he always gets his man. Too bad that usually happens 2 years after he stopped being good at baseball. Freel is still an improvement over Gathright.
