ESPN made it seem like the player's union negotiated the stipend for the players, and then everyone just assumed that staff and trainers were involved in that when they in fact weren't. There's probably a lot of truth to that because MLB still isn't paying the full 40 grand. They're paying 20 to the coaches and trainers, and I think the Red Sox are covering the rest. It's good that the players stood up for their trainers and coaches, but they also almost waved a giant middle finger to the fans who paid to see them play, and showed up today. If this would've taken a little while longer, that game wouldn't have been played, and there'd be a bunch of probably bitter fans that made the trip to spring training to catch a game. I also find this whole issue to be stupid because they're basically being paid an extra 40 grand for a trip to Japan. Unless I'm mistaken, they'd be paid their normal rate just for working the game, and the 40 grand extra is almost like an appearance fee. I wish someone would give me an extra 40 grand to go to Japan for a few days and do my job.
