This year’s draft will again feature just 20 rounds. Day 1, which begins tonight at 6 p.m. CT and can be viewed on ESPN and MLB Network, will include the first and second rounds as well as both competitive balance rounds and all compensation rounds. There will be 70 selections total.

The Cubs will make two picks tonight. They will draft in the first round at 13th overall and pick again at 68th overall with a draft pick they were awarded due to Willson Contreras leaving in free agency. The draft will continue on Monday with round 3, beginning at 1 p.m. CT.

We're excited to introduce the Cubs Draft Tracker which will be kept up-to-date not only during the draft but through the entire signing period. So keep coming back for updates!

There will be a lot going on during the draft both on and off this website. We will try to make updates to the story (and add links) as things happen, so keep refreshing! Hopefully there will be plenty of activity in the comments!

All these picks have been solid. What a draft. I was hoping Dollender would slide all the way to the Cubs.

Poor Dollander going to a backwards pitching organization when he needed to go to a forward-thinking one.

There's no way Meyer slides, right?

    Sigh

There's a lot of high value guys, they'd have to really botch this

He’s not exciting (but Wicks wasn’t either). Hopefully they do fun stuff later tonight.

Love this pick.  What's his name?  What position does he play?

    I really doubt it

mlb network said Shaw had a 40 inch vertical (i don’t really believe that) but projects as average speed

He's pretty much 50-60 on every tool

Good pick by the White Sox.

Why not? It's not common but doesn't seem out of reach for a young, professional-caliber athlete in 2023

something like 5-10 guys post a 40 plus inch vertical at the nfl combine a year and they all pretty much run sub 4.5

if he truly does have that kind of athleticism he should project to have better than average big league speed

Agreed. At best, it’s a small haircut of like $500k but he’s been mocked generally in the 8-15 area.

    Straight line speed, perhaps.

But baseball speed usually requires lateral speed and agility, which might not correlate with a vertical jump.

Pretty sure he does. I haven’t seen lower than 55 put on his speed and multiple 60s.

Perfectly fine with Shaw there. I think he actually has more potential impact than he’s given credit for, but still is safe enough to let the Cubs swing for the fences later on.

MLB has him at a 60 grade by the way

"Shaw might be one of the better college hitters in the Draft class. He rarely strikes out and draws walks while making consistently hard contact. He can drive the ball to all fields and he showed off impressive opposite-field power last year for Maryland, with many of his homers going out to right and right-center field. He’s a plus runner who is a legitimate basestealing threat."
