The Cubs now will explore trade talks with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at the winter meetings, which begin today, for shortstop Julio Lugo and outfielder Aubrey Huff. However, Lugo isn't in Furcal's class, though he is a leadoff hitter.

I think if the Cubs could get both of these guys that'd be a great deal for them. Of course, it depends who we give up.

After hearing what Hendry said about our three middle infielders I was kind of upset. He is clearly showing Walker no respect. I also think by not including Walker in our future plans he is diminishing his value. If teams thought we wanted him they may be willing to give up more. However, since it is clear Hendry has no plans for him teams will think they can low ball us. Hendry is giving them the advantage. Not the best of strategies in my opinion.

Just to add I also found this on ESPN Insider in its rumors section. They cite this article from the suntimes.

I doubt we have enough to make this happen, but how about a huge deal for Lugo, Huff, and Gathright - then send Gathright (and something else) on to Florida for Pierre?

I'd rather keep Gathright than trade him for Pierre.

I would have to wonder if Tampa would rather stick to trading 1 player at a time, in hopes of getting more in return?

Perhaps Atlanta would overpay for Lugo with Betemit and Estrada.

Perhaps the Cubs would overpay for Huff by trading Williams and Hill.

Florida got great return on each of their individual deals. I wonder if Tampa would take that same avenue?

Lugo and Huff and trade for Bradley. I would be happy.

The Big question is what would we have to give up for Lugo and Huff? I'm think they'd want Williams, Hill and Dopirak.

The more I look at Huff's steady decline over the last two years, the more apprehensive I become. I wonder if it's a change of scenery thing, or he is just losing it. I wouldn't be against acquiring him at the right price (player wise) but he isn't one of my top choices either.

On one hand, he could get worse (or repeat 2005). On the other hand, he could rebound and you could be buying low for a change.

could be tough to compete w/ the braves to get lugo...

On Friday, Will Carroll casually mentioned that Marte could be had for Julio Lugo:

"The Braves are said to be offering BP's 2005 #1 prospect Andy Marte in return, which would be a nice deal both ways, considering that Marte has fallen as far as fourth on the organization's depth chart at third base."

The Braves' initial efforts to acquire Devil Rays shortstop Julio Lugo stalled when the Rays balked at the Braves' offer of catcher Johnny Estrada. The Rays would prefer to acquire one of the Braves' younger catchers, either Brian McCann or Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

cubs can't top those offers.

Hendry stockpiled all those pitchers in the drafts and still he can't beat other teams prospects. I'm annoyed if he can't get somebody with all these young arms other than a PTBNL/cash.

On BBTN it was mentioned that the Devil Rays wanted a couple of the Braves top pitching prospects for Lugo but the Braves are reluctant to trade them. The Cubs may still have a chance.

Wow, Hendry's priorities really don't fit this market. Maybe he should consider that next time he comes up with a wish list.

not to mention the fact that hendry's wish list doesn't match the team's needs.

cedeno is your ss, walker is your 2b. fill the outfield now please.

I agree. I've cooled on him. At this point, outside of Dunn or Abreu, I don't know who I want.

The Trot Nixons/Kevin Menchs/Aubrey Huffs of the world just don't seem like nearly enough.

A Mench/Nixon platoon would be awesome. Their splits cry out for a platoon. Combined, I could easily see them posting a 900+ OPS.

Based on seniority, however, the platoon would end up being Murton/Mench and Nixon would play everyday.
