I am very high on Burnett so if this is indeed true this is going to be a problem for the Cubs.

On paper (and we all know what that means...) it gives the Cards a 1-5 that should run with any team in the NL. Carp/Burnett/Mulder/Suppan/Reyes (Marquis turns into a trade for sure if this is true.)

It's all about health.

Another thing I am wary of is that Burnett has always been much less effective away from Pro Player.

From what I'm seeing on the new digs in St. Louis, that's gonna be a heck of a pitchers park. The power alleys are deep deep deep. May have been a factor in the signing. If it is true...

Remember when InsidetheIvy, also a Scout site, broke the story we would sign Furcal And trade for Mench and Soriano.

Please forgive me if I'm skeptical.

However... this scout.com site used to be the Cardinals Birdhouse, co-owned by Brian Walton and Ray Mileur.

One of those two broke the Albert Pujols re-signing. ESPN credited whichever one broke it when they put it on their site...

Also: I do see what you're saying. They also guaranteed Renteria would re-sign. The next day, he had a Red Sox had on.

Still.. I think that airport topic (which popped up before the link, mind you), almost guarantees it. I could be wrong, though.

Here's what happened, by the way...

About an hour or so ago, a topic broke out at Cards Talk. Somebody claimed to have seen AJ Burnett in a St. Louis airport...

http://forums.stltoday.com/viewtopic.php?t=317818

Roughly an hour later, that Scout.com story broke..

I'd say it's about as close to official as we can get.

I don't much care either way. Burnett is a huge gamble at the terms being tossed around, and the Cards have some offensive holes to fill and not a lot of payroll to do it with. They can have him, they really didn't need him anyway.

The pitcher with the best pure stuff in MLB under baseball's best pitching coach?

Brutal.

Leo Mazzone?

Not even close.

Leo is amazing. No doubt. But Dunc has been pretty fantastic with pitchers that have come from other teams. Developing home grown talent has been the only real knock on him.

I just heard Ken Rosenthal on the radio say that his article on Foxsports.com was incorect about the Cubs pursuing Burnett. He said that it will likely be down to the Cardinals and the Blue Jays. In the end he believes the Cardinals will win out, even if the overall deal is better from the Blue Jays.

I'm curious to know what exactly the Cubs are looking at.

My memory may be off, but I seem to remember as many failed pitchers as successful ones in St. Louis in recent years.

New stadium. We just made millions auctioning off things from the old park. A bunch of extra revenue just came in...

In reality, I don't think this really cripples us at all. The contract is backloaded. We'll be trading Marquis... When you factor out the $5 million or so Marquis would cost us, Burnett might only be making like $4-5 million this year. Heck, even less?

I really think that, provided the right guy was out there, DeWitt would give us a little extra money to play around with. Jocketty and LaRussa convinced him Burnett was that caliber player.

And then, by the time the backloadedness (@_@) of the contract picks up, Edmonds will be off the books, and he'll likely be replaced by a Colby Rasmus, if all goes well.

It's going to work out pretty well, I think.

I seem to remember some STL media saying the Cards payroll would not increase much in the next couple years even with the new park.

Either way, I'm glad it won't be the Cubs taking that huge gamble.

Exactly. Because if you say, "Hey, we're raising payroll," then don't use the money, you look like a pompous ass.

He didn't do that. For the right guy, he'd budge a little. That's what happened.

Pitching wins, and the Cards have won with Dunc as the pitching coach.

But you're right to an extent. For evey Carpenter and Morris, they're is a Stephenson and Simontachi.

Burnett's risky as he gets further into the contract (injury concerns). Backloading it just makes it worse, but hey, good luck.

Do you know how many times during the winter I've seen an "airport" thread on a message board?

Once there was Pudge was seen in a Chicago airport. I've heard all kinds. It's just not reliable. I'm not saying it won't happen. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it does. It's just far from proven yet.

OK, that's true.

Anyway, here's my thoughts: if it's like 5/$50 or even 5/$55... I'm OK with it. Furcal just got $40 million for 3 years.

Is it a risk? Yeah. But it's hardly a crippling contract, and I think he's well worth the risk.

This is classic ...

Seriously , I am about 95 % sure it was him. Could he be here for a press conference ? A physical ? I was picking up my brother and I was on one of those moving walkways , he walked by . It happened pretty quick but I was like , hey that was A. J. Burnett.

Anyway , who knows. I am pretty sure it was him though

Can we save these comments to bring back out in 2-3 years???

I didn't post until I saw the Scout.com link.

I just don't find it coincidental that there's an airport topic followed by a link less than an hour later.

Could I be wrong? Yeah. I just feel that he's more than likely a Cardinal, and it would be a hell of a coincidence if this turns out to be false.

It's not like the Scout.com article came up, then somebody made the "OMEG I SAW HIM" topic.

kerry wood got traded to baltimore??

Wood has better stuff than Burnett? Ha!

It's Sunday night, man. Don't you have to go to work tomorrow? You shouldn't be liquored up this late.

I beg to differ. The Cards have a sub-100 million payroll. If Burnett pulls a Kerry Wood, it's going to put the squeeze on the team.

Until he puts a few full seasons together in a row, Burnett = Wood, pure and simple.

Burnett's raw stuff may be marginally better than Wood's. You seem to have the gift of hyperbole tonight.

But this is all assuming that our payroll stays the same. For all we know, we budged up to an extra $5 million a year.

That'd be like signing Burnett for $5-6 million each year.

I genuinely believe that extra money was available for the right guy; so please, do not say that the money could've spent elsewhere..

This is all purely hypothetical, of course.
