Pop the champagne fellas. God forbid Hendry overpay anyone. Todd Walker deals are the benchmark. ;)

I'm sure you'd agree that it's a good thing he didn't match the Dodger offer, though.

I am pretty bummed, but I am glad we're not shelling out 13 mil/yr for Rafael Furcal.

It's not my money, so oh well. Everybody's overpaying nowadays. Wait around for Walker deals and we'll get no one.

Calling $10M per year for Furcal a "Walker deal" is ridiculous. That's a serious offer -- and *way* more than Furcal is worth. It's a poor FA market, and consequently those FA's worth anything are getting deals that I wouldn't offer. Sorry, but I don't thinkFurcal isn't that much of an upgrade over Cedeno -- certainly not $9.7M worth.

Edited for typo

How did you comprehend that?? I didn't mean Furcal @ $10 mil. was a Walker deal.

Walker's deal is well under what's he's worth. Few guy's screw themselves out of money like Walker.

You mean few guys care about winning and playing in a good baseball town over $$$ ?

It clearly reads to me like you are criticizing the Hendry and the Cubs for not overpaying. You may not be saying that, but that's how it reads (to me).

Walker is very clearly a value for his contract -- which is why I'm in favor of using him as trade chit for an impact RF or bringing him back for 2B. Really, I don't see how we could improve there -- provided one views contracts as a cost-benefit analysis.

It's also worth questioning how you determined that the rest of this board is only looking for "Walker deals" just because they don't want to pay 13 (or, in some cases, even 10) million dollars a year for Rafael Furcal.

Does anyone know if Len Casper has tried to post yet? I think I missed it.  :P

According to my source, Len and Jim are barhopping. Maybe when he wakes up tomorrow he'll get around to posting.

Oh come on, the Hooters girl hasn't seen either of them for a few hours. I want the latest scoop. :P

This thread (and forum) reeks of cynicism and bitterness, so much that I can't even read this anymore. I'm not harping on anyone - I feel the same way myself. :( :( :(

I'm not bitter at all. The Cubs have 20 million to solve a problem in RF and CF. I'd go after Bradley and Wilkerson to fill those spots. Wilkerson can play right and lead-off and Bradley can hit 2nd or 5th and play CF.

Anyone know what this does to the Dodgers financially? I know it's been mentioned that Milton and Lowe are likely to go as a result, but I remember hearing they were going to substainially cut payroll. Can anyone help me out here?

The Dodgers manage to do a good job of overpaying for guys people on this forum want, don't they?

If anything, I think this means Hendry will be going after Juan Pierre at this point.

best move hendry's made all off-season.

and people say i'm always negative.

It does give me a warm fuzzy feeling to know that Hendry had the wherewithall to sign Neifi as insurance. It will be a joy to see him hitting near the top of the order all year again.

I agree that he was correct in not matching what Furcal got. But now he is painted into a corner and simply must make at least two deals to imporve this team.

And BTW, today's Trib once again mentioned Burnitz as the worst-case scenario. Indeed.

This appears to me to be an 'ego' move for the new GM, Coletti. It really makes me wonder how MLB feels about baseball executives not being "fiscally responsible". I thought there were some whispers about MLB already being angry about teams overspending, I have to think this would be gas on the fire. The only saving grace for the Dodgers would be that they didn't offer that many years. I'll bet there's a player option for a fourth and maybe even a mutual option for a fifth. Edited by ThePenguin11

Also, what does this say about the so-called "Dusty-draw" in light of the fact that Furcal prefers a manager-less team? I guess its:

"Cash rules everything around me, CREAM get the money, dolla' dolla' bill, y'all!"

Screw Furcal, that greedy SOB. Wasn't all about the money huh?

Neifi Perez, your 2006 starting SS. ](*,)

No, Cedeno starts at SS and Neifi gets 2B. Walker's gone in a trade. There's no doubt about it now. We have too many holes to fill without getting rid of him.

The Cubs likely will turn their attention to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' Julio Lugo, who, like Pierre, would fill the team's need for a leadoff man.

There are other options too, like AGone part II. Unfortunately, I wouldn't consider Cedeno as our new SS a certainty by any means, yet.

For what it's worth, Mike Kiley seems to think the worst case senario is Cedeno at SS and Neifi at 2B which confirms, yet again, that Walker's days are numbered. The Cubs will turn to Lugo (so will the Braves)

He also says that Patterson's days are definitely limited as well and the Cubs are in hot pursuit of Juan Pierre.

Ronny Cedeno still could be the starting shortstop next season. Cedeno's role would be less certain if the Cubs acquire Lugo, but they will be satisfied to open the season with Cedeno at short and Neifi Perez at second if circumstances dictate.

Hendry will try to regain the momentum by trading center fielder Corey Patterson and acquiring center fielder Juan Pierre from the Florida Marlins...talks with the Marlins about Pierre will be one of the Cubs' primary focuses during the next several days.

Kiley also says that Hendry's interest in Mench and Bradley may not be as strong as advertised.

The article doesn't mention Burnitz except to speculate on his replacement. Kiley is certain that the Cubs want a lefthanded RF.

AGone Part II. That will get us to the playoffs...

...and then help us lose by booting an easy, but extremely important, double play ball??? :x
