Sorry if anything on this topic has already been posted in another thread, but does anyone have any updates on Adam Greenberg? I believe the 10 days have now past since he was DFA'd.... just curious to know if he was traded, released, something else?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I guess D Lee is our new RF...

With the Howry signing, aren't there now 42 men on the 40-man roster?

If Furcal is signed before the Winter Meetings, won't that be 43? Mabry would be 44!

At least one trade has to be on the immimant horizon.

Hopefully Mabry isn't signed AND Macias is still released.

The local media says it's all but a done deal (pending a physical). Mabry will probably be introduced tomorrow or Thursday.

Mabry in Cubs' bench-bolstering plans

November 29, 2005

With an eye toward bolstering their bench, the Cubs are set to sign free-agent utility player John Mabry.

Mabry, 35, has played the last two seasons -- and seven of his 12 years in the majors -- with the St. Louis Cardinals. He hit .240 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 112 games in 2005.

The Cubs are interested in Mabry as a left-handed pinch hitter and a bench player who can play the outfield and spell Aramis Ramirez at third base and Derrek Lee at first. The deal is expected to be completed after Mabry passes a physical.

Mabry will be the Cubs' third free-agent acquisition this offseason...

Tribune:

The Cubs are expected to announce the signing of free-agent utilityman John Mabry within the next day or two, and will bring recently signed reliever Bob Howry to Wrigley Field for a news conference on Tuesday.

won't happen until there is a 40-man roster move. I am sure there is some rules obligation to not announce it or have Mabry officially sign a contract, until there is a roster spot open. Dave Kaplan of WGN thinks that something will happen this week on the trade front.

Not true. Eyre and Howry have been announced and they're not on the 40-man roster yet.

If he wasn't claimed off of waivers, then he should be back in our system.

Eyre and Howry are on the 40 man active roster. Aardsma is not at this point.

AND the whole italic part? As I understand it, Eyre and Howry are not on the roster either. If they are, Moore is definitely not and someone else must be removed. If they are not, it supports the presumption that Moore is on the roster and Eyre/Howry are not on it yet officially. In any event, multiple moves have to be made this week which will change everything...

Is it wrong that I don't think Adam Greenberg will never be more than a fringe MLB player? I don't understand why everyone is so high on him. He's a really fast guy who might be a decent hitter. I'm thinking he's the caucasion answer for Tom Goodwin.

I don't think he'll be anything more than fringe player either, similar to a Tom Goodwin, Neifi Perez or Jose Macias, but at the minimum cost. And players of that capable are currently taking up space on the 40 man rsoter for far greater cost. In an offseason where you are looking for overhauls in CF and RF, I don't understand just dumping a potential platoon CF. That limits your options.

IIRC Tom Goodwin doesn't have good patience right? Greeberg does, so thats one advantage. Besides a Goodwin type player is a good 4/5 OF. And theres the chance he could surpass those expectations. I mean they could at least get something for him. Throw him in the Bradley trade, use him a pospect as a part of a bigger deal to get a RF, SOMETHING.

He does a lot of the little things right and the way Hendry seems to overpay for bench help Greenberg could be a nice cheap roster filler for the Cubs.
