Not much meat to the article other than Cashman is talking with Giles. In the last few weeks they were saying the two sides couldn't get a hold of each other or something. Everything I've read makes me believe the Yankees want Giles, they aren't coming anywhere close to paying Damon what he wants, and they're scared by the market as they haven't got anyone they wanted so far. In my opinion definately look for Giles in pinstripes next year. Damon? Who knows. My dark horse....? Detroit.

We better pray Hendry gets Furcal, there's not going to be much left.

It agrivates me to no end that hendry isnt getting in on this (to the best of our knowlege)

You and me both. He needs to bust a move as smooth as Casanova.

I've pretty much accepted that Giles won't be playing for the Cubs next season. As long as he isn't with the Cards, it'll be ok. It's sad that Hendry doesn't value Giles enough to pursue him, but I'm not too surprised. His priorities this offseason don't include OBP or plate discipline.

I don't think Giles has any interest in playing for the Yankees. I also think he wants at least 3/36. Getting the Yankees involved will help the bidding go as high as he wants it to go.

This is our only hope - Giles really doesn't want to go to New York. Still, money talks in the end. Always.

It's possible Giles wants a ring, and thinks playing in New York is the most probable way of getting it.

Definately within the realm of possibility that playing in San Diego and Pittsburgh would send him down that line of thinking.

I think it's important to note that the Yankees have always been on the list of teams that Giles could not be traded to.

I'm not even sure the Yankees are all that seriously interested in him. Aren't they supposed to be going after a true CFer this offseason?

While I like Giles I have no interest in getting in a bidding war with the Yankees over him. I also have no interest in giving him more than 3 years, and that is even a stretch for me. I'd rather pay him more per year and just make it a two year deal.

Just wondering, but were the Cubs on that list?

Not that I'm aware of. Both NY teams were and Toronto was. I think the Expos were when they were in Montreal.

His (Hendry's) priorities this offseason don't include OBP or plate discipline.

And the evidence clearly supports this statement. Of the five people who's services Hendry has either retained or acquired, (Perez, Williamson, Walker, Eyre and Howry) only one of them shows any ability to get on base at a decent rate. Plus, it is logical to assume that every GM always aquires players in order of importance, thus clearly displaying for all to see how they rank on his priority list.

Am thinking Giles is priority 1 or 2 for NY. They're probably going to throw lots of money at either Burnett or Millwood too. It's always difficult to beat NY when they really zero in on a player.

If the Yanks don't get Giles pretty soon, I can see them swooping in and picking up Bradley before someone else picks him up as their plan B. Their offseason is off to a horrible start, and they know they can't go into next year without a decent CFer. I don't think they'll spend too much time chasing Giles and end up with nothing at all to show for it.

But we are talking about Steinbrenner here, he may just stick to Giles and offer him $16/4 or 5 or something ridiculous like that out of frustration.

IIRC, the "ONLY teams" he would accept a trade to---when he was still with the Pirates---were the West Coast teams, and the Atlanta Braves. Every other team had to convince him to accept a trade. Obviously the only teams that virtually had no shot at Giles were crappy teams, and teams on the East Coast-sans Atlanta.

My guess....it's either Anaheim or San Diego for Giles. Brian simply has NO INTERESTS in playing for the Yankees, or why play "phone tag" with Torre and O'neill? As it had been mention, the Yankees are simply being used to get more money.

I'm guessing he's waiting around to see what Anaheim does w/ Manny, and is using NY to raise his price tag. Am guessing SD and Anaheim are his first choices, but wouldn't be surprised to see Giles take NY's money and run.

As for Bradley, can see him being NY's 2nd or 3rd option.

Brian Giles - OF - Padres

The Blue Jays made what were described as "significant inroads" over the weekend in their pursuit of Brian Giles, a person familiar with negotiations told The Globe and Mail.

The Jays will announce the signing of B.J. Ryan today and they still hope to add either A.J. Burnett or Giles. "We've had a number of conversations with the Blue Jays and all of them have been positive," agent Joe Bick said. "But the truth is we just found out last Wednesday that there was no chance of getting anything done with the San Diego Padres and now we're moving forward and looking at our other options. Toronto's one of them." Nov. 28 - 3:50 am et

I've said all along that Giles will not be back in San Diego. San Diego burned that bridge by lowballing Hoffman, lowballing Giles and showing no interest at all in retaining Ramon Hernandez. They had the money this offseason to bring all three back.

The hometown discount ticket is not only burned, but burned beyond repair. San Diego is more interested in putting a nice shopping mall next to Petco than putting a team on the field.

Hoffman didn't just roll his eyes when he was lowballed by San Diego. He cleaned out his locker. Something he has never done with San Diego before.

Some NY officials think Giles is just using them to up his price:

Although the Yankees are keeping the lines of communication with Brian Giles open, there is a growing belief among team officials that the free-agent outfielder does not have much intention of signing with them, a person familiar with the situation said.

Joe Bick, Giles' agent, has insisted that Giles' only preference is to play for a winner, but the Yankees think he has shown interest in them only as a negotiating ploy to increase his asking price elsewhere, which is a common practice among free agents.

General manager Brian Cashman and Bick spoke Saturday, and Bick said yesterday he expects them to speak again soon. But it seems as if the Yankees are staying in touch in the unlikely event the market for Giles shrinks and they become his best option.

Do you think they (Padres) do this because SD is such a beautiful place to live and they can get players to lower their asking price? Are professional athletes are the only ones that can afford a house in the SD area? :D
