The Braves have signed former Cubs’ top prospect David Kelton to a Triple-A contract.

Probably become a decent player now that he's in the Braves' organization.

He was a good guy, but he sucked. He'll never stick in the majors, not even with the Braves. I'm surprised they bothered wasing a AAA slot on him.

Wasting a AAA slot? It's one thing to waste a 40-man spot on Jose Macias. But signing a guy like Kelton to a AAA contract is hardly a waste of space. I think that Kelton has zero chance of being a good major league regular. But, I think he can provide you similar numbers to his 2005 AAA season, .283 .329 .420, from the bench, and at the minimum for a couple years, that's decent production. There's a good enough chance that he'd end up with significantly more SLG than that as well. He could sub in at any OF position, 1B as well as some emergency duty at 3B.

What the heck is a waste of AAA slot anyway? When guys like Hubbard, Echevarria, Calvin Murrary and the rest of taking slots, Kelton is hardly a waste.

Kelton still has a chance to catch on as a backup corner guy, but he's fast running out of time to turn a career around that has gone downhill after is third base problems.

Best of luck to him.

Dohhhhh.

I still remember thinking we could see an infield of Kelton at 3b, Montanez at SS, Hill at 2b and Choi at 1st.

3 out of 4 are gone now, and the 4th went backwards through the system and plays the outfield now. 8-[

Kelton? You surely mean Texeira.

Kind of hard to do that considering we never had Tex.

This goes back to when there was still a belief that Kelton could play 3rd.

Does that make me old?

Sorry, that was the old Pete Gammons statement for what the future Cubs IF would be.

I do remember that Tex was speculated as the guy the Cubs would get in June of the following year. They ended up with some Prior guy instead.

I seem to recall that Tex broke his leg or something, which dropped his value a hair.

Funny how these things play out. Right out of the gate, the Cubs looked like geniuses in taking Prior. Now, two years removed from 2003 and going on a third, it's looking more and more like Tex was the better pick. The guy is an absolute monster bat, and will be a star for a long long time.

Prior OTOH, I hope his regression in 2005 was the result of lingering injuries he wouldn't disclose, and not indicative of where his career is heading. Because when you look at his soaring pitch counts, more than double his "prior" (hehe) BB rate, the declining K rate, the increasing ERA and WHIP--it's a very alarming situation. If he doesn't get back on track in 2006....I'm just sayin'

Teixeira was pretty pedestrian away from Arlington last year (.809 OPS). For his career he's sub-800 OPS away from the hitters haven.

Good. We can give those 460 ABs to someone with more promise.

The problem is the Cubs don't have anybody more promising than Kelton ready to take 460 ABs in a corner OF spot in Iowa.

Wow. That is a very depressing sentence. :?

Who do they have slated for the OF?

Greenberg, Sing, Bacon, Creighton & Montanez ended last year at AA. So probably some mix of them, though not sure if Montanez will be in AAA.

I would like to see Creighton and Montanez spend a little more time at AA, but I don't know if that will be the case since there seems to be a shortage right now. Greenberg, Pie, Bacon, and Sing are all likely candidates, but I could see Sing possibly taking over 1B for Hoffpauir after starting in AA. I think he would benefit from a little more time there. Then again, we need to find a spot for Matt Ciaramella (PTBNL for JVB), possibly at AA.

When was he named PTBNL?

DOH, I just went to the DJaxx website to make sure I had all the right names and forgot about Pie.
