For what it's worth, but Hermanson was drafted as a closer. It wasn't until '97 after being traded to Montreal (via florida) that Alou had him starting. then he bounced back and forth between starting and pen. he was, however, first a pen/closer to be guy.

Are you sure about that? Drafting closers to be closers has been a pretty new phenomenon.

Hermanson didn't start a pro game until 1997, and had good save totals in his minor league stops. Looks right to me.

He's also going to get three times the money per year. Is Wagner three times more valuable than Eyre?

yeah. given the amount of $ the cubs have to spend, i'd rather have wagner at $10 mil than eyre at $3ish.

and as long as we're throwing opinions out there, i'd rather have wagner at $10 mil than eyre, neifi and rusch at $10 mil.

I'm bumping this thread when the old fart blows out his elbow next year and we will have avoided another Benitez/Urbina

are you also gonna bump it if he has another season like this past one?

or if eyre sucks, neifi starts 110 games w/ a .280 OBP, or rusch posts a 4.90 era?

Since apparently you've been feeling ornery lately, please tell me when I've EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER advocated for the re-signing of Neifi or Rusch? I would like to be pointed to ONE single post where I mentioned I was happy with those deals.

I'll give you some time to find it, but you won't, because they don't exist.

If Eyre sucks, then I'll eat my crow, but I'm not the one bashing hendry left and right for EVERYTHING he does and doesn't do 3 weeks into the offseason (not implying that you necessarily are, but some people are)

And did you see what happened to EVERY high priced closer last year?

So it's okay to throw words back into the faces of those who don't like his moves, but not okay to throw stuff back into the faces of those who do like his moves?

huh? what are you talking about?

huh? what are you talking about?

I'm talking about how incredibly immature it is of you to threaten to bump this thread to try and humiliate people who have a different opinion of yours, and how incredibly hypocritical it is of you to react the way you did when somebody asked if you'd do the same if the opposite were to happen.

Jesus christ it was half hearted reply, I wasn't trying to "humiliate" anyone.. Quit whining about everything. If someone bumped a thread where I said Eyre is the greatest Lefty ever, and bumped after a 4.5 era season, I woudln't feel humiliated at all.

React WHAT way? I said I NEVER advocated for the Neifi and Rusch deals so his post using those deals to "get at me" wasn't accurate. I have said I like the Eyre and Howry (if it happens) deal, so that would be an accurate place to call my opinion out.

Man for as aggressive and attacking as you are, you sure do get defensive about some things.

Who is acting defensive? You're the one who made the threat, then quickly flipped out when challenged with a question. What if Wagner is great, again? Will you bump it?

big deal...that was one year. since benetiz and percival got hurt, that means wagner's good as hurt next year? that makes no sense.

i never said that you wanted neifi or rusch. you said you were going to bump this when wagner gets hurt...in response to me saying i'd take wagner over the three cubs. even if wagner gets hurt and misses half the season, i'd rather have him over the three cubs if those three cubs suck and take playing time from cedeno/hill.

Man is this women's crocheting? This is a threat?

Sure, just for you Goony, I'll bump this thread and proclaim that I am an evil Northside baseball poster who threatens to humiliate posters by jokingly announcing that I'm going to bump a thread. As If I would even remember what thread this was next year.

Back to the topic of the thread here's a report from msnbc.com about Wagner possibly signing with the Mets.

Mets' Offer

Is Philly really that tough of a sports town? I honestly don't know. Anyone? Anyone? Beuler? NY is absolutely brutal.

Philly is a BRUTAL sports town.

IMO NY, Boston and Philly are the hardest places to play. The thing about NY and sometimes Boston is that you also get a lot of national recognition if you are doing well. I don't think that happens in Philly nearly as much.

Closers=most overrated "position" in baseball. Sign a middle reliever to close, maybe you'll get lucky and he'll be dominant, but regardless you could find one for $3 million a season that converts at a solid clip in comparison to ridiculous $10M/season closers.

Wrong wrong wrong. Look at the Red Sox of 03, with the closer by comittee. Then they fail horribly, realize they need a closer, sign Foulke, and win the World Series. Houston had Lidge. St. Louis has Isringhausen, White Sox had Hermanson/Jenks. The truth is that having a great closer and setup man shortens the game to 7 or 8 innings.

Also, did you know that Hoffman has more saves than Mariano Rivera in less opportunities? Wagner is in that upper tier as well, either one is worth at least 3/30 to me. Wagner I'd go 4/40 without hesitation due to being younger.

For what it's worth, it wasn't necessarily the idea that was bad, it was the awful relievers that they tried to implement the idea with. I think bringing your best reliever into the game in the most important spot, be it the 7th, 8th, 9th, or 5th is a great idea.

The one thing that makes Philly a little easier for baseball is the Phillies are clearly an afterthought in that town. They are all about Eagles and Flyers, and a little about the 76ers. But they have no faith in the baseball team there, so there is very little expected. The fans are still quick to turn on players, and it is tough to deal with, but it's easier than being a baseball player in Boston or NY.

Per Rotoworld

A source told the New York Times that the Mets offer to Billy Wagner was a three-year deal worth $30 million-$31 million with an option for a fourth year.

Didn't see this posted yet.

I think one of the mods already stepped in and asked that the topic be dropped a little later in the thread.

And I'll reinfoce it now. Let's stick to talking about how signing middle relievers to overblown and overextended contracts while weakening the farm system by giving up draft picks is a really bad idea.

This thread should be renamed The Ghost of Mike Remlinger.
