I was watching Around the Horn one day, and L.A. writer Bill Plaschke said that if Oregon or UCLA were in the SEC, both teams would easily win the conference. I thought there's no way in hell. What does everyone else think? I thought the guy was crazy for suggesting that, but maybe I'm wrong. Thoughts?

No way do either of those two win the SEC.

ESPN has Oregon bumped all the way down to the Holliday Bowl. Ouch

I just heard on ESPN radio the Oregon could now be in the Fiesta and OSU will get left out. So many different stories :x

When is the BCS selection show?

Dec. 4th

BTW, another argument for a Big 10 title game: Ther have been split or co-champs 6 of the past 10 years

How many of those Co-Champs met head to head? That is what I really just don't get. I think a few years ago UM and Iowa split but they did not play. This years co-champ thing just does not make sense.

There's always a lot of talk about Mizzou going to the Big 10. I don't think any of it is ever serious, but as a Mizzou student, although we would get pounded, the exposure would beat the hell out of the current TV deal that the Big 12 has.

Then would the Big 12 lose their championship game? What other teams could fit in the Big 10?

Thats why Mizzou would never leave the Big 12, because it would cut a lot of ties to the Big 12 schools theyve had for years and years. I still think Notre Dame would be the best for the Big 10, but I don't see that happening either.

Half joking half sincere.....There already is a Big Ten Championship game. Its Ohio State verses Michigan.

That won't happen. I hear Temple is still looking for a new conference :D

Maybe the Big 10 can get a team from the Big East. Pitt or WVU?

No, it wouldn't happen. I'm shocked that Plaschke would say anything nice about UCLA, though.

firejoemorgan.blogspot.com tore Plaschke a new one the other day for his article about the new Dodgers GM

Congrats to Basanez for being named the Big Ten first team QB. With 36 more yards on the ground, he can become the first 10,000 yards passing/1,000 yards rushing QB in division I-A history.

Congrats indeed. Too bad he won't even get a guest pass to the Heisman ceremony

Syracuse and the Big Ten have had a few discusions in the past about joining. I admit that WV or Pitt would be a better match geographically though.

He really only had one bad-ish game, but the passing attack would have had to have kept it up all year. The drops against Michigan pretty much killed any shot he had at being invited. It was contingent upon him being able to ride the media attention for the last 4 weeks of the season. That just wasn't very likely.

Of course, nobody really cares about that. All the focus is on him leading the team to their second ever bowl victory. That and praying for no Detroit.

I dont know how Gabe Watson got B10 1st team. That fat piece of crap didnt do anything all year until he fell on the football in the game agains OSU. Woodley and Branch were better players on the d-line for that team than Gabe was.

Looks like the first Bowl matchup is set. The new Poinsettia bowl in pleasant San Diego will host Colorado State and Navy.

The Big Ten has several things that it considers before it would take someone in. It is not just geographical. Of all the major conferences it has the highest acedemic standards. Not only for athletes but also the schools in general. So before they take someone in Acedemic requirements would have to be considered. Also they would probably look at graduation rates of athletes. Some existing big Ten teams might not be that good but they would not take someone in that was below par. I also dont think that the Big Ten would go raiding other conferences.

So basically they are waiting on ND and will stay at 11 until or if that happens

That must be a grandfathered rule, as I think I read that OSU's football graduation rate is about 10%

Or is it the players get 10% of the ticket sales? I find it amazing that this school gets away with the things they do.

Regarding academics that is one of the reasons ND will never join. The Big 10 often does joint research, and with the religious nature of ND's research it would either a) limit their ability to do what they want with research b) involve the other schools in research they are not interested in doing. This was one of the main reasons given by the University a few years ago when the Big 10 invited ND.

That plus the alumni funding. Since ND is funded mainly by the alumni the school often makes efforts to schedule games where a large fan base can see them play. A conference affiliation would take away from that ability. Those are just two of many reasons, but they are largely non-football, so I thought I would throw them out there.

Just a tidbit of interesting info. Many, many, many years ago ND attempted to join the Big 10, but was denied in large due to Fielding Yost and his hatred for ND.

Notre Dame's graduation rate (for athletes) would be tops in the Big 10. Right now Penn State is #1 in the conference and #4 in the nation (Div 1-A) behind just BC, ND and Vanderbilt

Penn State 1994

Wisconsin 1999

Purdue 2000

Illinois 2001

I'd hardly say that Michigan and Ohio State have owned the Big Ten's top spot and the automatic BCS bid.

Besides which usually (this year being an exception), the "underdog" team wins this game, screwing up the season of the favored team. OSU's title year was another exception, but so many times, one or the other is undefeated or on the verge of a big bowl or conference title and they get beat by the underdog.

As a Michigan St fan this is hard for me to say but they may not even win half of the Big Ten title but OSU and Mich always are in the picture and their game seems to always matter to who wins the Big Ten championship. When Illinois won in 2001 it was because OSU knocked off Mich and I think when Wis won in 1999 it was because Mich knocked off OSU

edit I forgot to mention that i did mention also in my other post that even though some programs in the Big Ten may not have high graduation rates they would look for schools that did to join the conference. I havent looked lately but i am willing to bet that the big ten does have the highest graduation rates among the major conferences. Also though OSUs football graduation rates may be low how is the rest of the school. Also OSUs standards may be low compared to other Big Ten schools they would probably be high in the ACC or SEC

I think Plaschke is full of it. But I've rarely read or heard anything by him that makes sense. I doubt there's anyway UCLA would beat LSU. I also have my doubts whether they would beat Auburn either.

There's one reason---and one reason only---that Notre Dame does not join the Big Ten: NBC TV money.
