A.J. Burnett, the prize of this winter's free-agent starting pitching market, has received two five-year offers from clubs and expects to receive at least two more within the next week, his agent, Darek Braunecker, told ESPN.com.

While Braunecker declined to identify specific teams in the bidding for Burnett, a baseball source confirmed that the Toronto Blue Jays have offered Burnett a five-year deal for about $50 million. Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi couldn't immediately be reached to comment.

Braunecker said he's still in discussions with nine clubs about Burnett. Texas, Seattle, Washington and Boston are among the teams in the mix, while the St. Louis Cardinals also are believed to have expressed interest.

Bidding war for Burnett begins

The market for free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett is sizzling.

Burnett has received a five-year offer from an unidentified club, FOXSports.com has learned, and two other teams have indicated their willingness to extend him a five-year deal. The offer that Burnett received is believed to be in the range of $10 million per season. Given the intensity of the bidding, it would not be surprising if Burnett's price ultimately rose to six years and/or $12 million per season.

The Cardinals, Cubs and Red Sox are among the teams pushing hard for Burnett. Six other clubs also have expressed significant interest - the Mets, Rangers, Blue Jays, Mariners, Orioles and Nationals.

Several of Burnett's suitors - including the Cardinals, Cubs, Mets and Red Sox - would be in position to trade starting pitching if they added Burnett.

The Cardinals could move right-hander Jason Marquis. The Red Sox, expected to trade lefty David Wells, also could deal righty Matt Clement. The Cubs' plans would hinge upon the health of right-hander Kerry Wood.

If the Cardinals get Burnett, then he will not only stop being injury prone, but they will automatically be awarded the 2006-10 NL Central championships by Bud Selig.

according to ESPN Insider.

he's received 5 year offers from 2 clubs, with two more expected to offer similar deals shortly.

JP hasn't confirmed the offer yet.

I did hear from a source (not one of my main sources), who said Ken Rosenthal of Sporting News told him the Cubs are right in the middle in the chase for AJ Burnett. Other teams mentioned: Boston, Toronto, St. Louis, Seattle, Washington and Baltimore.

Can you bat leadoff?

Your "sources" you speak of... how do they get their info?

Maybe I put to much confidence or "trust" in your posts. Don't take any offense to that, but you always seem like you are in the know.

Just wondering is all...

No. I'd like to be assistant GM, and your right hand man. And when I do really well in my assistant GM job, Tampa Bay or Kansas City can come make me a GM offer.

Thanks for your insight, Hoops. Burnett is not at the top of my list by any means, but you can never have enough pitching and that news is encouraging.
