IMO good deal for the Padres, I think Cameron will improve away from NY.

In what way? He was having a career year before getting hurt. He turns 33 this January and is going from one pitcher's park to another. I don't see him improving at all.

The Mets make out like bandits in that deal. Nady is young and cheap, and has potential to be a solid 1B:

I like the deal from the Mets' perspective.

Gah, that's why I wasn't happy seeing Cameron's name thrown around on this site for the Cubs. He's like Jeromy Burnitz in many ways--a veteran player with some skills, he's not a dog by any means. But winning ballclubs do better than plugging in so-so guys like that.

For the Padres, a decent move then. Cameron has power, can still run, and of course, is an excellent glove man. But a career sub-800 OPS and average 150 K's per year, and poor BA, the guy is no star.

Mets gain yet more salary room to go get Billy Wagner and Carlos Delgado. I only hope Rafael Furcal isn't added to the list.

Nady's minor league numbers suggest that he could be a good corner OF and an above average 1B offensively, but he's had 775 MLB AB's, and he hasn't been very good for a corner OF/1B, and his splits aren't any better(worse actually) away from Petco. He certainly has the potential, but if it were me I would've tried to capitalize on Cameron's big year more with more proven production.

Nady has a gun. It would be a waste to put him at 1b.

Nady has never really been handed a starting job. He was blocked by Klesko and Giles all these years.

The Mets did very well here in removing salary and getting probably equal production in return.

I have no idea what the Padres are thinking. Vinny Castilla and Mike Cameron?

Does this mean Dave Roberts could be coming here to play CF and lead-off? Is he an every-day type of player or part-time? How is he defensively? I heard Boston is interested in re-acquiring him.

He can play everyday, but I'm not enamored with him. I'd rather sign Lofton for a year and not give up anything while we see what happens with Pie (and possibly Patterson). Lofton's OBP is better.

Roberts is arby eligible, also.

Triple B,

I was talking to one of my best sources today, and he felt that Roberts might actually be a good fit, and seems to recall that Hendry had expressed interest in him in the past. That is not to say we should start any Roberts to the Cubs rumours here, but he may definitely be an option for Hendry for CF/lead-off, if Cameron passes his physical. I think being arby elgible will make him very attractive to Hendry because of the Cubs cash situation.

I don't know.

If he can't trade him, though, I hope he does.

IMO, $2.5 is too much for what he brings to the table.

I disagree. Considering we're paying Neifi the exact same amount of money, Hairston brings a lot more to the table. First, he can backup CF. Next, he actually has speed. Third, he'll take a walk. The only thing Hairston can't do that Neifi can is play SS.

I'd rather keep Hairston at $2.5m than Macias for a similar role at around $1.5m. At least we're getting a signifigant upgrade for our dollar.

Has Hendry ever non-tendered a player? He seems to be a guy that hates to give up on a player without getting something in return. How long did it take him to get rid of Lenny, Delino, and Enrique?

I really, really think that Macias' defensive debacle in CF last season might push Hendry to replace him with Hairston on the roster. If Hendry is serious about his defensive focus, and his "catch the ball" stuff, there's no way Macias can be seen as "versitaile".

Far too long.

I seem to recall that we got some guy named Jesus Sanchez as the 2nd player in a deal. I believe Hendry non-tendered him the very next season.

I'm not so sure San Diego will want to get rid of Roberts. They spent a ton just to get him (Jay Payton, Ramon Vazquez, a minor leaguer and cash to help Boston with Payton's contract).

Cameron certainly isn't a lead off hitter. Who on that team is if they get rid of Roberts?

San Diego has wanted to improve their defense because of their pitching dominated park. If they can land Jacque Jones for the other outfield spot, they may have the best outfield defense in the NL.

Roberts, Loretta, Klesko, Cameron, Jones, Castilla, Greene, Benji Molina?/Miguel Olivo

Weird offense to say the least.

Cameron takes over for Giles. This is the the sing saying that Giles is not going to re-sign. An OF of Kleskp, Roberts and Cameron in SD this coming season. Too bad for Nady, he will provde the same offense as Comareon for a fraction of the cost. I enjoyed his "eckstein like" attitude in SD.

Klesko is done in the outfield. He's moving to 1b.
