In my mind, this is what has to happen to give the Cubs their best shot as winning in '06. I sure am glad to see anyone predicting that Giles will go to the Cubs.

I'd piddle myself if we landed 3 of those 5 provided two of them are Giles and Abreu (I'm sure one of them could handle CF). I'm sticking to my guns that Furcal will be extremely overpaid and I wouldn't mind giving Ronny a chance with Walk at 2B.

Off the top of my head they're either going to have to sign those FA's for less than expected, or get some money for Abreu to be able to afford that. Those 5 are like 40 million.

There's too much of a recent history of flat-out wasting that money. Sammy was worth that money for a few years, but he certainly wasn't for the last 3. Maddux was a good signing at the time, but he was given way too much money. Neifi and Glendon at ~2.5!?!?!? Whatever.

 

Yes, the Trib is to blame. It's just like giving your sister $2 on her way to the gas station and saying "buy me a can of Coke and bring me the change". If she brings you an RC and says you owe her a dime, you need to step in and tell her she messed up. The problem with the Trib is year after year they're handing their sister $2 and don't care if she even comes back at all.

What did they end up spending last year?? About $103-105 million?? With the way the Trib rakes in the money off the Cubs, $110 mil. is reasonable. Cub fans deserve it.

It absolutely amazes me that people still let Hendry/Dusty off the hook with the "Trib is cheap" excuse. 103-105M isn't enough? THat's why we lost last year cause we didn't have an extra 7M? What exactly would Hendry have spent it on? Extra money to Dusty's loyalty guys.

To me, acquiring Furcal and Giles is reasonable, and adding Abreu to those two would be the best case scenario. That said, there's no way I don't have DLee batting third.

 

 

edit: I also want a bullpen arm or two.
