I never was much of a baseball fan growing up in Louisville, KY but I moved to Chicago in December of 1986 because of my job. 1987 was the first year of Andre Dawson in a Cubs uniform and my first visit to Wrigley Field. I've been hooked ever since.

My dad moved around a lot when he was a kid but his dad kind of rooted for the Red Sox.... but my dad always had a soft spot in his heart for the Cubs. Then my dad moved to Chicago to get his PhD from U. of Chicago, and he became a full-fledged Cub fan while there. We moved to Philadelphia but he raised me as a Cub fan... the other major pro sports teams I was allowed to choose, and naturally I chose the Philly teams.

Thanks pops... I'd really hate to root for a winner in my lifetime! :x

My story goes like this... My first MLB gameattended was a Cubs game in 1978 against the Pirates. There was maybe 15,000 in the stands but an 8 yr old, I had a blast! I felt an attraction to the team, Dave Kingman hit a monsterous home run that day.. I also remember my grandfather sitting in front of the TV on Sundays with an Old Style in hand listening to Brickhouse's "HEY HEY" call.. But something just wasn't there to really draw me to this team.

I used to watch the Saturday morning shows on Channel 44 and afterwards the White Sox would come on. Boy they had peculiar uniforms with the collared shirts and horizontal striped socks. I liked the fireworks that shot from the pinwheels out over center field when a HR was hit (hey, I was 10 at the time). And this announcer with huge glasses singing "take me out to the ballgame". GASP, I was a Sox fan (shudders). What really drew me in to that team was Harold Baines. After the 1983 season when the Sox lost to Baltimore in the playoffs, something changed... I was riding high that year, they had a powerful lineup and dominating pitching and then to see them choke at the end was disheartening, pluse I couldnt stand listening to "the Hawk" calling games.

Then 1984 came and I started watching Cub games with my best friend (hey, there was Harry singing the 7th inning stretch again!) I think I watched every game that year, I was a freshman in HS and my math teacher even had the playoff games playing on a TV in class. There was so much buzz floating around that season, and that was the magic that drew me back to this team. Unfortunately, they choked too at the end, but I've stuck with 'em ever since!!

So, yes there was a period (1980-83) that I succumbed to the dark side (no pun intended). I still have the program from that game in '78!

Never have been never will be. I was born in St. Louis and moved up here when I was in the 4th grade because my dad's job got transfered. I remember showing up my first day of class wearing a t-shirt that said "I root for two teams - The Cardinals and whoever plays the Cubs".

I was a very socially awkward child.

As fortune would have it, my parents moved us to Logansport, IN (about 4 hours south of Chicago) in the midst of the 1984 season and after seeing Ryno and Co., I was hooked for life.

Not sure if I have posted here before, but I was originally an Indians fan as they are the hometown team. Also, I was young at the time and really didn't get into baseball until the 94 (great year to get involved) to 95 season, when the indians went to the WS. Then we got sattelite and I started watching the Cubs from time to time on WGN, just when I was bored. Thats when I discovered how great NL baseball was, and my deep hatred of American League "baseball" began. Ever since, I have been a Cubs fan.

I grew up in the Bahamas and in 1982 we bought one of those old school 16 foot satelite dishes. (certainly illegal but down there everyone had them) I used to watch Scooby Doo on WGN after school...except one day I get home and what the heck is on...but baseball??? Cubs baseball?? Oh No!! Soon learnt the error of my ways and 23 years later here I am. This why I am saddened by the drop in games carried by WGN. If not for WGN I certainly would not be a Cubs fan and probably not a baseball fan. (Although this seems difficult for me to comprehend)

My first Cubs game was what turned me into a lifetime fan. I was 6 when my dad took me to my first game in 1989. The Cubs went down early 9-0, but came back to beat the Astros 10-9. It was my first game and I loved it. That 1989 team will always be the team I grew up on and loved.
