Is it possible that the Cubs are going to trade Cedeno and others to Florida for either Pierre or Castillo?

I'd kill for Castillo if it blocked Neifi from regular playing time.

The scary thing is this may be the proverbial robbing Peter to pay Paul. If Castillo comes to the Cubs I think that means they couldn't sign Furcal and guess who slides over to the SS spot?

Maybe Walker goes to Flordia, thus eating a little bit of Castillo's salary. The Hendry will have his 2 speedsters in the 1-2 spots.

I've looked all over and can't find a definitive answer on whether someone like Perez could even be traded this off-season. I know if arbitration is reached with a player they can't be traded until next year, but I can't find the rule in this situation.

Anyway, the point is the Cubs have several options at M.I. and have listed Furcal as their number one target. I'm afraid this means Cedeno and Walker will be gone as they are eligible to trade and would bring back much more in return than Neifi Perez.

Trading Cedeno is the only way this move can be half-justified. Otherwise you're either overloading an already short bench(hooray 12 pitchers!) with strictly middle infielders, or you're setting up a Neifi/Cedeno for one spot.

If the latter is the case, they'll start in a platoon to break Cedeno in, and Ronny will outproduce Neifi. Dusty will say that this is part of the plan, and wait until Neifi completely breaks down to play Cedeno everyday. At the slightest sign of struggle, Dusty will put Neifi back in, and Cedeno will be lucky to see the platoon role. We saw it with Choi/Karros, we saw it with Hollandsworth/Dubois, and we saw it last year with Cedeno/Neifi. Why would this be any different?

Ahh yes....the old deja vous all over again thing. I think I've lived this nighmare before.

He filed for FA, didn't he? I think that means we're stuck with him until June. Besides, why would we sign him to trade him, and who in their right mind would take Perez at $2.5m?

The part I don't understand is this. Hendry knows Perez wants to be a starter and it's in Hendry's character to be straight up about things like this. This is why I think Perez will be starting at 2B or SS for the Cubs or another team if he is eligable to be traded.

Does it matter? The organization wuvs Neifi to itty bitty pieces. He will not be traded.

That is exactly what I'm afraid of. If they sign Furcal, either Walker or Cedeno will be traded. Or both.

Even if he is eligible to be traded, there are some things to consider:

1. Exactly how much can you realistically expect to get in return for Neifi? Probably not much, which means you'll either have to throw in a prospect or two and/or take on a lot of salary to get something good in return.

2. Who the hell wants to trade for Neifi Perez when he is due $5 million over the next two years?

I'm not going to crucify Hendry until I see how this plays out, but I'm certainly not optimistic about all of this. Unless this is part of a very good plan that no one can possibly predict, this is just not a good signing.

Same here. All circumstances considered, I will be shocked if 2B isn't being reserved for Neifi. There will be a sham "competition", but the job is his. I don't even think it's his to lose, I think it's just plain his.

I think you're all overreacting. How is anyone surprised that Neifi was re-signed? He's been an on-field leader (how many times was Neifi the only one to calm down Z?), he's very good defensively, he's mentoring Cedeno on his defense and reads, he's a friend of Furcal (and shares the same agent), and most importantly... he's a BACKUP! What better backups were available that had the same defense and similar intangibles? Furcal will start at SS, Cedeno will start at 2B, Neifi will backup both, Walker will be traded.

An absolutely horrible, horrible move. I can't fathom why he deserves two years. I'm assuming the Cubs are gonna make a big move at Furcal and have Cedeno starting at 2B. Waive bye bye to Walker and I'd expect Hairston to play CF if not traded.

quick, find me 3 other "backup" infielders making $2.5 mil/year

And Dusty will insure this "backup" gets 500 plate appearances

From today's ATM Report:

1) According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have agreed to a 2 year contract for all time great run coster Neifi Perez.

And on top of how terrible it will be to see Neifi pick up 450 ABs this year. This seals the deal on 2 of my favorite Cubs for '06 in Walker and Nomar. I hate you Jim Hendry, I hope you never get a job after you're inevitably fired when MacPhail wakes up from his 11 year nap.

I don't think anyone is surprised. But you can still be disappointed even if you knew it was going to happen.

He's been an on-field leader (how many times was Neifi the only one to calm down Z?),

His leadership skills aren't worth a two-year, $5 million deal.

he's very good defensively, he's mentoring Cedeno on his defense and reads, he's a friend of Furcal (and shares the same agent), and most importantly... he's a BACKUP!

Don't be so sure about the backup thing. I would be extremely surprised if Perez got less than 400 plate appearances next season.

What better backups were available that had the same defense and similar intangibles? Furcal will start at SS, Cedeno will start at 2B, Neifi will backup both, Walker will be traded

That's the problem. Signing Perez probably will lead to Walker being dealt. Walker is making $2.5 million in 2006. That's a great price for a second baseman that provides his level of offense. We could have him starting at second, Furcal at SS and Cedeno backing up both. Instead, if someone isn't dealt (possibly even if someone is), Cedeno could end up back at AAA.

if he is indeed a backup....why are they paying 2.5 a year.....seems pretty expensive for a backup middle infielder

I wonder if other teams are given a choice between Perez and Walker who they would pick? Just say Walker could bring in Mench....does anyone think that Perez could? I don't.
